  1. I just looked at my 98 repair manual.... It says normal fuel pressure for your car at idle is 44-50 psi. When the car is shut off fuel pressure should remain at 21psi or more for 5 minutes. If pressure is not as specified, check the fuel pump, pressure regulator and/or injectors. Now I rarely hear of fuel pumps or injectors going bad in these cars. My best guess according to your info is that you have a shot fuel pressure regulator. You can rule out the fuel pump as the culprit by testing it.... normal is 0.2 - 3.0 ohms at 68 degrees. You can check it by removing the back panel in the trunk then unhook the wiring harness to the gas tank. The wires will probably have a yellow cover and will wrap over the tank behind the back seat. The fuel pump and regulator are in the tank on the rear seat side of it. No need to take the back seat out right away.
  2. Welcome to LOC Gary ! Looks like you did pretty good considering the low milage. You're gonna enjoy your LS!
  3. It's not that it's a bad design, it's that the seats wear out over time. Come on guys this is a Lexus, do you really think they would design seats that were uncomfortable? Most of the time I think the leather is not properly cared for so it gets hard, uncomfortable, and cracks. What can you do? Recondition it a ton, but that may not help. The best would be to replace it. The foam wears out, simple. You can replace it or add more foam to restore it. Seats wear out over time, you don't notice it as much with cloth seats but they wear out too.
  4. Welcome, it's great to hear about your new LS ! Man, I would love a 98! Just for future reference, it's best to ask one question per thread, then the thread can stay on topic. 1) Most likely you will have to drill the cheap struts or pay for Toyota ones. I highly doubt Lexus/Toyota came out with cheapers ones. 2) That's strange...not sure. It should be the other way around...cold start takes longer than warmed up start. Hmmm I'll think about it more. 3) Have you tried spraying on some WD-40 and then trying the bolts? 4) You could check the torques on the bolts but you're probably just worrying about nothing. 5) I'd have to see a picture. Where are the pics of your new LS, let's see your new baby!
  5. Motor mounts (2) $184.16 Trans mount (1) $51.60 3.5 hours of labor to install the 3 mounts...rate varies as you know...I paid $60/hr Total cost for me = $446 Mine were changed around 138k or so. For me, it made a big difference...when I got the car back it felt new! If you're gonna do them do all 3. You have an SC which is obviously different, but it's got the same engine. Anyway, this is one repair that made my LS feel like a Lexus again....sometimes you can't even tell it's on it's so smooth.
  6. After I had my motor/trans mounts replaced the car was noticeably smoother. My mechanic thought they looked good too...before he pulled them out and compared them to the new ones. He said the old ones were compressed about 1-2". Yours may look good but they may not be good.
  7. It's just a rumor right now but there's talk of a new LS soon...LS460, UCF40 probably.... http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/new/rev...ex.cfm/id/38166 Personally I would like to see a hybrid LS that gets 50+ MPG.
  8. Man, even after writing my LS generations article I'm still seeing the word used wrong....currently there are only 3 LS generations!!!!
  9. Army, yeah you can't win em all. Nonetheless I really appreciate your thoughts on this, you obviously know a thing or two about engines. I myself do not know very much...I'm learning though! With the problem I was having it really could have been anything, and sometimes you just have to be there. The shop I took my car to charged $99.40/hr for labor or diagnostics. Last I heard that was around the Lexus dealer labor rate? The shop was only a few blocks from my house though, they employ experienced mechanics, and they don't charge an arm and a leg for parts (still overpriced though). Day two and it's still running perfect. I drove around 60 miles today and milage seems back to normal. I also got gas today and figured a rough estimate for the milage I was getting with the coil out.......3 MPG :cries: !!!! A little rich ? I'm thankful it's fixed.
  10. Did you disconnect the negative lead on the battery so the ECU could reset? Try that first. While you've got the negative lead disconnected charge the battery for a few hours. Reconnect the neg lead and then try starting. If you don't get it started try pulling the DOOR fuse in the fuse block under the steering wheel. Then try starting. You probably just need to charge up your battery...it happend to me not too long ago.
  11. Cool pics. Lexus is doing some crazy stuff with their concept cars. I like everything I saw except the rear. It's cool that it's super low, but that wouldn't fly here in MN ;) .
  12. annual tune up! How much are you driving per year? Wires should last for a long time....don't overkill here bud....plugs ok cool, wires...probably not needed. Save your $green.. I just looked at Vitek and their wires have gone up in price, I don't have any hook-ups their either :( . As far as I know, I don't think cheap performance wires for the LS exist....everything I know about is >$100 per set.
  13. Possible things that could cause the vibration... -tires not balanced correctly -warped rotors -worn bushings I think you have some worn out bushings, it's very common with LS's around the milage you have. Take the wheels off and check to see if anything wiggles around. If so then you probably need new bushings. I've got a tutorial for rear carrier bushings on my site.
  14. Conclusion Well, I just picked up my car and it runs smooth as ever now :D :D. Quiet, smooth, normal exhaust smell, power...it's all good, it runs like a Lexus again! Diagnosis: LH ignition coil was totally dead. Also, a few vacuum lines were broken and one fitting was broken. I broke the fitting a while ago and ghetto rigged it to work.... The tech had to repair the vacuum lines and fitting first, then diagnosed the coil to be dead. Good job jzz30! I took a quick look under the hood and the fitting is like new again, incredible! This was a tough problem and the guy that worked on my car was really good. The total damage was $307....it would have been more but the guy that called me messed up with his estimate a bit so he took off some labor costs. Got a free car wash coupon too and my car is in desperate need of one, that's worth ten bucks. Anyway, I think this was a pretty good deal considering it was a tough problem to diagnose. Once it warms up here and I can work on my car again I'll probably replace the RH coil just as a preventive measure. Caps and rotors have been on my to do list for a while and those will get done too, I already have those parts. Thanks to all that helped with ideas, you guys are great, one of you was even right! B)
  15. Hahaha, you still have time. I brought it in yesterday but they haven't looked at it yet.
  16. My parts book shows two pictures, one for 90-92 and another for 93-94, they look almost the same. There's 6 part numbers though, trac and non-trac. It goes, 8905-9008, 9008-9208, and 9208- The first two numbers are the year it was made and last are the month. I think the 9008 is actually a 91 model year that rolled of assembly August of 1990, and a 9208 is actually a 93 model year....you get it. You can tell exactly what you have by looking in the driver's side door jam area, it's listed by the VIN. Are you thinking of that TB on ebay?
  17. I'm bringing it to the shop closest to my house. We'll see what the pros have to say, hopefully they can figure this out quickly. I'll keep you guys posted.
  18. Hahhaa lol ! This is what I would do... >$50 fight it <$50 pay it You may want to consider making it legal to avoid this type of hassle in the future. Here in MN they are anal about tint. My friend got pulled over and he only has factory tint, it looks dark in certain lighting though. Anyway, good luck with this bud!
  19. Hmm we have some saying plugged cats and other saying that's not so . I've been doing a lot of searching both here and on CL and have found several people with the same symptoms as mine and it turned out to be 1 or more cats. How in the world could my timing belt jump a tooth! The car was perfect before my vactation, not used, and then developed this problem. My gas milage was getting progressively worse before vacation though....forgot about that. If it's the caps and rotors would the cap be cracked? Ohhh I also forgot to say this....the longer the car is on the more of a plastic-like funky burning smell develops, like something under the car is getting too hot (no fires or melting)....hard to describe the smell. Also, the car does get up to highway speed, it just takes a long time.
  20. Is it really worth all the trouble of fighting this? You have illegal tint, that means the cop was right to ticket you...even if it was sort of mean given the situation. I don't think this is like a speeding ticket where it gets more expensive the faster you go. Tint is considered an equipment violation right, so isn't the ticket the same price whether you have 11%, 20%, or anything below the legal 40% in your area? I highly doubt the cops meter was wrong. How much is the ticket?
  21. Yeah man, it's been stuggling lately...good thing I work at home so this isn't the end of the world ;) Well, it sounds like I'm gonna have to bring her in. My LS has always had a little too much smoke coming out of the exhaust. I guess the cats just died finally. Your diagnostic does make sense and I too feel like something is clogged. I'm gonna look into a shop around here. Thanks guys :)
  22. Ok my car starts perfectly now but has developed an even worse problem. It barely accelerates now and it's seriously drinking gas. I can smell it too, it's an extremely rich fuel mix. It kind of sounds like something is blocking the path of the exhaust, it's got a low pitched rumble sound to it and lot's of white smoke comes out. I really hope you guys can help me figure this out. The only thing I can think of is something burned out, maybe a fuse. When my battery was charged the guy that helped me flipped the 'boost' switch on his charger...maybe that did something. Tried checking the codes and nothing came up. Reset the ECU and that seemed to help, but then the problems came back. I'm sooo confused unless I can figure this out soon I may have to bring it in, not much time.

The wings are ahh unique, but I personally don't like that wide body kit. It makes the LS look like one of those pickups with four wheels on the back <_<
