  1. I switched to Denso Iridium and changed my spark plug cables at the same time. MPG went from 18 to 20. ;)
  2. I don't think it's considered a sports car. But you could call and ask.
  3. How about getting a padded vinyl roof, opera lights, and chrome straps on the trunk lid. Don't forget the obligatory TV antenna.
  4. Left front speaker works intermittently. If I turn the volume up it comes on and then stays on no matter what the volume. I have replaced the amp and the speaker. I'm thinking now its the head unit. Anyone else experiencing a similar trouble?
  5. Get a new battery box and some longer battery cables. Drill some holes in your trunk floor. Secure box in trunk. (Optima makes some neat batteries, you can mount them in any position). Run new cables to new location. Sounds simple but you'll have to secure the new cables alongside the frame with insulated clamps. Also make sure the new battery box is bolted down securely. Need to vent the box also.
  6. 95 SC300 purchased Aug 03 90,000 miles, $10,500.00 17" IS300 wheels/ 245/45/17 Mohawk Perdators BFI/K&N Iridium plugs Sylvania Silverstar headlights, high beams, fog lights, turn signals Replaced antenna mast Rear calipers and rotors from Supra TT. (Fronts didn't fit with new wheels ) Stainless steel brake lines Polyurethane swaybar bushings Everything else works except pass. side interior door handle
  7. Get yourself a long screwdriver. Start the car when it's cold then hold the screwdriver with the working end on the valve cover and the other end to your ear. You may have to move it around to find the loudest noise. We used these "listening" sticks at the phone company to hear when a relay operated. Make sure nothing is hanging loose that could be caught by the fan, belts, or pulleys.
  8. You have another remote key? If that's true then maybe the key with the new battery is coded differently. Is it the original?
  9. Differences between the SC300 & SC400 The SC300 comes with a 3.0-liter 182 ci cast iron inline-6 motor with aluminum heads (engine designation: 2JZ-GE) and a choice between a Toyota A343E 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive or a Toyota W58 5-speed manual transmission (available from 1992-1997). From 1992-1997, the power was rated as 225 horsepower @ 6000 rpm and 210 ft/lb torque @ 4800 rpm. From 1998-2000, the power was rated as 225 horsepower @ 6000 rpm and 220 ft/lb torque @ 4000 rpm. Curb weight ranges from 3494 lbs. in 1992 to 3560 lbs. in 2000. The SC400 comes with a 4.0-liter 242 ci cast aluminum V-8 motor with aluminum heads (engine designation: 1UZ-FE) and a standard equipped Toyota A343E 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive (from 1992-1997). No manual transmission was ever offered for the SC400. From 1992-1995, the power was rated as 250 horsepower @ 5600 rpm and 260 ft/lb torque @ 4400 rpm. From 1996-1997, the power was rated as 260 horsepower @ 5600 rpm and 270 ft/lb torque @ 4400 rpm. From 1998-2000, the power was rated as 290 horsepower @ 6000 rpm and 300 ft/lb torque @ 4000 rpm. Curb weight ranges from 3575 lbs. in 1992 to 3655 lbs. in 2000. Manual transmissions were never offered for the SC400 and were discontinued after 1997 on the SC300. The SC300s that came with optional Toyota W58 5-speed manual transmissions do not come equipped with traction control. In 1998 the SC400 received a Toyota A650E 5-speed automatic transmission with advanced ECT-i and a burl-wood gated shifter (from 1998-2000), while the 1998 SC300 received a Toyota A343E 4-speed automatic transmission with burl-wood gated shifter (from 1998-2000). In 1998, both the SC300 and SC400 received VVT-i (intelligent variable valve timing) engine technology. These motors have completely redesigned heads, which boast variable valve timing on their intake camshafts via an oil-driven helical gear-drive. 1998 and newer Lexus models with 4.0L V-8s are capable of low to high 14-second quarter miles. - (info provided by gs400998) The SC400 came stock with 16x7.5-inch alloy wheels and the SC300 came stock with 15x6.5-inch turbine-cut alloy wheels. The SC400 came with power automated telescoping/tilting steering wheel, and the third brake light was mounted inside the spoiler as opposed to on the rear dash behind the windshield in the SC300. The SC400 has larger disc brakes (11.7-inch front & 12.1-inch rear) compared to the SC300 (10.8-inch front & 11.4-inch rear). The SC300 had an optional but very rare velour (gray or tan) interior and optional but very rare hard top (no moonroof). There are no substantial body differences between the SC300 and SC400. Models that did not include a spoiler with LED-third brake light, standard on the SC400 and optional on the SC300, were fitted with a third brake light on the rear deck behind the rear windshield. 10. Did you get your pressure plate resurfaced or replaced? Does this happen in any gear?
  11. Just had another thought. You could have yours rebuilt. But being in the big Apple that might be prohibitive. Call around.
  12. Do this first, it's practically free: BFI Your next bet would be an electric cooling fan in place of the stock engine driven fan. Catback may give you a little bit also.
  13. You can use a piece of clear plastic, like a heavy gauge drop cloth cut to fit. Use silicone sealant.
  14. Find a 99 RX300. My 17 yr old step-son has had 3 accidents already. Thank God he wasn't driving my SC300.
  15. I would guess it's the heat from the catalytic converter. Check and see if the shielding is still on. Might be time for a new one. :(
  16. You can get a Griffith aluminum radiator or have one custom made.
  17. I have read about a professional car thief that scouts out a car and triggers the alarm every A.M. until the owner shuts it off then he steals the car. Just a thought.
  18. Might be your vacuum booster. Check for a vacuum leak.
  19. If you mean the console lid I had the same problem. The small round pads that the lid rests on were missing. I replaced and all is well.
  20. Does your key have push buttons on it? If so you have to get one from Lexus or you might find one on Ebay. Lexus will program it for you, not sure of the Ebay way.
  21. Sounds to me like it's working the way it should. If you're on the throttle hard the mpg should go down real low. If you lift your foot of the gas and coast it should go way up. What does it show with the cruise control on?
  22. I don't think you want to be fooling around grinding on the combustion chamber. You could use a thicker head gasket.
