    Thanks for the advice. I tend to agree, although my son has a 2012 Mazda 3 with over 100,000 miles on it and it has the original ATF fluid in it. Some Mazda owners have gone 200,000+ miles without changing their car's ATF and are having no problems.

    If your vehicle was originally issued white or green decals prior to 2017, your vehicle is no longer eligible to participate in the CAV decal program (as of January 1, 2019). I take this to mean that you cannot obtain a sticker, even if your vehicle never had one. The CA government wants you to buy a pure EV, apparently.

    If you plan to drive on 8 inches of snow and on steep hills, then yes, AWD will come in handy. Otherwise, snow tires and front wheel drive will do just fine under the vast majority of conditions. My sister in Connecticut has the same car you do, and she has driven front wheel drive Mazdas for 20+ years without any problems.

    I have to wonder why you felt it necessary to replace your spark plugs with only 20,000 miles on them. Did you mean to say 200,000 miles?My Rx required plugs at 120,000 miles. What type of plugs did you install?

    Where's the moonshine factory? 🙂 I have never been to Virginia but did drive from Connecticut to San Diego, many years ago. The fun part is that the trip was via my 68 Corvette with no air conditioning.

    Those are good coils ($53.79 at rockauto.com). I've replaced the 12V battery every 5 years or so and never had to reset anything except the windows and radio stations. The spark plugs you used should be okay. I see that there is an NGK 94279 "Ruthenium HX High ignitability plug at rockauto. It is $8.55 each. Supposedly, it offers "maximum durability and ignitability"

    I would think that if you changed air flow in any way, that the engine's ECU would have to relearn its outputs. How long has it been since you did the work? Did you use OEM plugs? Not doing so could result in less than desirable performance.

    How many miles are on the odometer? It looks like the pulsing/surging occurred after the work, so I would not assume that the issues are NOT related to the service work. Who did the work? We had our sparkplugs replaced at 120,000 miles (Toyota dealership) and the valve cover gaskets, a year later (independent shop). Our RX now has 135,000 miles or so on it and we've never experienced any surging or hesitation of any sort.

    Great! I would recommend that you spend a bit more for a name brand, although sometimes they are multiples more expensive. When labor to replace is not trivial, higher quality is often the better choice.

    Very nice! I've used Turo, many times. Most have been for fun (McLaren 570S, Porsche 911, LC500, Jag, i8, Vanderhall Venice, etc., But a couple were for out-of-state travel.

    I have a friend who just bought one, a few months ago. His wife has a Range Rover but he didn't want to take that camping. Thus far, the only thing he dislikes about his LX is the fuel mileage. Other than that, he really loves his LX.

    Has it been very hot out? I suspect that the rubber seals can get a bit sticky when very hot. Have you tried wiping a silicone lubricant on those gaskets?

    There's a specific sequence of checks that should be done when a vehicle doesn't start. If you want to do your own repairs, having a factory owner's manual would be very helpful. The "Car Care nut" youtube channel can be helpful, also. The commentator is a Toyota mechanic who also works on Lexus vehicles.

    Ideally, your vehicle would be on a lift so that you can walk around underneath and shake/inspect suspension or exhaust components. I've taken each of my vehicles to my favorite alignment/repair shop to investigate strange noises. At least twice, all they had to do is tighten up a bolt.
