  1. ??????? If you can't get it off to clean it, how are you going to get it off to replace it??????? If you can't get it off, then to "replace" it, you have to replace what it attaches to... And that means a new rack..... When it looked like mine was bad I shoped for just the solenod, but could not find one, new or used. In fact Lexus dealers claim to have no part number for it. You have to buy the rack to get it. Junk yards would not sell iy of the rack, etc... I hope Lexus has started selling them and I'm wrong... On getting it off, have you tried the last resort. Heat it up!.... It is a plummers trick to get rusted pipes loose. Be very carefull. Do it on a rack. Have a fire extigusher at hand. Clean all grease , oil etc, from the area. Get a smal penciel torch. You want a very small very hot flame, that you can hit the thin nut with. Heat it up and hit with cold water. The expansion and contration should free it... But this is truly a last resort.. And one you may not want to do. You are dealing with not only an open flame but lots of high heat! Have you tied some really good penatrating oil??? Not WD $ or Liquid Wreanch, but some really good stuff like Break Free or I think there is one called PB??? You may have to look in a sporting goods store for break free. It is used to free up jamed gun actions. Plase try this before thinking about the torch aproch.
  2. at 170 miles find someone with one of those systems that will power flush the trany. The stuff the dealer gave you is fine. There is no more dexII. It has been replaced with the new stuff.
  3. The piont of the Taco post is sometimes you have to say "F" this... I'm giving myself a brake
  4. Please when you post do not DO IT IN ALL CAPS.... It is the same as yelling. It is not nice. I would say yes, it can be a gas thing, but if you re-read his post he is adding coolant? Wight smoke and coolant loss.... Unless there is a pool of coolant under his parked car..... I would say the smoke is from the coolant, and yes, he could also have a gas issue.... Anyone know a good independant in this guys area?????? Sounds like he needs someone with the right know how to look at the car and fix it. Please stay away from the dealer. Most will take advatadge of you, and the only thing they will help is themselfs to your money.
  5. On the wiper. It could be the arm or the holder the blade goes into, and not the blade at all. RainX.. Great! can't live without it. Have used for over 10- years. But some things to know. The claener the glass is before you apply it the better it works. Clean glass with lots of Paper towels and rubbing alcohol. Once you have rainx on thw glass, you should not clean the glass with anything but paper towels and water. If you use a cleaner it will effect the rainx and your windows will look dirty. Reaplly the rain x every now and then. Clean the old rainx off first. To clean your glass and get all the rainX off, use lots of paper towels and rubbing alcohol. I have found with rainx on all my windows and out side marrors, seeing in the rain is no big deal. And I almost never even need to turn the wippers on.
  6. The link you put up does not go to the info on the mass air.... It goes right back to this post.... Opps....
  7. The correct level of fluid is not the problem. First thing I did was to check the level. I also pulled and checked my inline filter and it was clean. Also as I added an additive if level was low, that would have fixed it.
  8. Air filter is clean. After every long drive (600+) miles I blow it clean. It picks up lots of bugs going though the desert. How do you clean Mass Air Flow unit? I pulled mine and it looks clean (wire grid). On Power steering. Auto zone has a rebuilt unit without the resuvor, with lifetime warntee for under 140.00 . After you return you old core unnit cost is about 120.00. I have one on order. You have to go in to order it. It dose not show on the internet. I'm just going to replace the unit, clean screens, and flush and fill. On Friday the thing started to sound like it was going to explode. Other dirvers were lookinh at me, the thing was so loud. And I lost low end power. But yesterday, it got better, you could hardly hear it, and had power at all speeds. As I know the screens are clean or close to it, I'm sure the pump is the bad guy. So for about 200.00 to 225.00 with the paid labor, I'll just play it safe and replace it. The pump on the car was rebuilt by dealer at 60,000 miles. Now has 130,000 miles on it. Not bad for a 91. I got it about 3 years ago with about 90,000 on it.
  9. If it was mass air flow why would car rev ok, buy have trouble under load??? Also way would truning off and on make everything ok. As I have put upwards of 2,000 miles on the car with no repete of event I still think it was strange one time computer thing????
  10. The car had a major tune up about 3 or 4 months ago. TB was sparkling clean. I use an additive in the gas every 3 to 5,000 miles. I like the stuff made by "chemtool".
  11. For anyone with a working r12 system like mine. I'm a hair low on r 12. But in winter the price of the sstuff on ebay drops. But stay away from anything like "freeze" 12 or anything claiming it works with both r12 and r1345. I also have to other older cars converted from r12 to 134. All I did was change vacum down the system, and put 134 fittings on. Remember once you convert use about 20% less 134 then r12. If you do 100% of 134 for r12 your system will not cool as well.
  12. I thank you for the thoughts, but I do not think it was bad gas, as after I turned the car off, then back on, everything was fine. If it was gas, or a cloged line etc., turning on and off would have done nothing. Also do not think it was plugs. As car would rev fine in "P" or "N", but would not run right in gear, till I got over 50 mph, and would act up againn if I went under 50 mph, this went on for over 20 miles till I turned car off and restarted it. Plugs either do or do not fire... But speed and load would not effect the plugs fireing. I think it was somethink that gliched in either the electronics of the grear box, or engine control. But it has not come back. Thank God....... I'll take a good running carer anyway I can get it, and if I have to thank God for my car running right... It's a lot cheaper then paying the shop...... :o
  13. I just got back from Auto Zone . I ordered a rebiult pump. It has a lifetime warantee. It was under $150.00 with core charge. If I return the old unit I get back $30.00 so for $120.00 I get a pump with a life time warantee. I do have to move the resevor from the old to the new, but for !20.00 I'm not even going to think about rebuilding the old one. I will have my shop do the work. I'll have him pull the selonide and check the screen, and pull the resevor and check the screen. If they are clean, I'll have him put the new pump on. If they are dirty I'll think about just cleaning and flushing. But as I have an inline filter and it is clean, I will be amazed if the others are dirty. Pump has about 80,000 miles on it (was rebiult by dealer at 60,000 , when my dad had this car). To get the $120.00 pump you have to go into Auto Zone, they do not show it on thier web site.....????? Also as of this morning, my low speed steering is acting up....... So, it could be the screens.. Or the pump, or both........ I will know next week when I get the new pump.
  14. Got back home today just intime to drive by the shop before they closed for the day. Told him additive did jack to help. Told him forum is stating pump or belt. He felt more likly pump then belt. But said it could be belt just unlikely, he put a blast of wd40 on the belt whith car running. He said if it was the belt that would change the noise or stop it for a second or two. Noise did not change. Looking more like the pump. I'm looking online for a rebiult one now.
  15. Do Not Trust The Dealer!!!!!!!!!! I found this forum when I was 500 miles from home and the power steering was going out last xmas. Two Lexus dealers told me I needed a new pump, and complet rack. I was looking at $4,000 worth of work on a 91 ls! After reading the forums I took the car to a independant guy and should him print outs of how to flush the system and clean the screen on the rack and in the pump. He charged my a 1/2 labor and the cost of the fluid. The car drove fine after that for 1000 miles. The problem came back. This time I was at home. I reflushed the system, cleaned the screens and put an inline filter in. I have put over 15,000 miles on the car. The system has been fine. My power steering pump is just now starting to act up and is really dying now. I,ll put in a rebuilt for under 300.00. I'll never take this car to a dealer!!!! Trust this forum. In the last year it has saved my more money then the car is worth!!!!!!!! Look for my post on all the info on the power seering filter. You can do a search by my name and see all posts. Most of the folks on this forum realy are nice and verywilling to help. Some even work on Lexus for a living, and none of them will tell you to trust the dealer. Said but true. Take care. Hope this forum helps you as much as it has helped me. Think of this it will cost under 100.00 to have someone flush the system and clean the filters/screens for you. If it helps. Bingo you saved big bucks.
  16. O.K. just an update. Have put abou 1,500 miles on the car. Including doing the above drive over again. Car has never acted up again. Hope it never will!!! But now the power steering pump is going out :cries:
  17. I have now put 1,000 miles on the car with no change to the noise. Addidtive is not helping at all. Again everything seems fine, exept this noise. I'm starting to think I have a jet engine under the hood. Before I do the $$ of the pump, I'll replace the belt and se if that does it. I will be supprised if it does... But I'll be happy as it is cheeper and easer then the pump. Will do today or Thursday??
  18. Well the car made it to LA. Showing no indacation of a power streeing issue, other then the whinning. I know it is not the filter on the solenoid becouse my low speed power steering is fine, and 'I cleaned that filter some time back and then wentt with a finner inline filter, and I just checked that one and it had almost nothing in it. I'm staying at a hotel next to an airport that has small jets at it. The whinning noise is a lot like the sound a jet makes as the engine winds up. As for the belt, looks like I may try that when I get back home. The noise is there at all speeds. Just gets high in pitch at hih speeds. Again no fluid loss, and streeing feels fine at all speeds, even stopped.
  19. The system has not and is not showing any sign of loosing fluid, but if I have a leak I will know it today, as I'm doing a 300 + mile drive into the LA area (Southern California). Also this drive will get the additive to working if it is going to fix things. I do not see how it could be air in the system, as the system was "closed" when it started. But a 300 mile drive should help that to. We will see
  20. OK hit the back of the pully with a spray lub. No help. I did some break free stuff and then tried a can of "gel" silicone spray. sprayed with car off and with car on. No help. The sound is still there. It is what I would call a whinning or howling. It is not a screaching like a baering going bad. As long as engine speed stayes the same the sound stays the same. It will only go away if I turn the streeing wheel back and forth, but it comes right back the second the wheels are not turning. Also if I put my hand on the cap for the power steering I can feel the sound.... If I touch any area close to the pump, I do not feel it. The sound is the same if I remove the cap. The sound goes up in pitch with rpm. I have only driven about 25 to 30 miles from when I put the aditive in. I will be taking a 300 mile drive on Thursday. We will see..... This is the stuff I put in: http://www.lucasoil.com/products/display_p...atid=2&loc=show I have talked to them again. They state it should work, but needs at least 50 miles of driving to take effect.
  21. OK, lets try to respond. First thanks for the input. I know not to put "Power Streeing" fliud in. Only dex III. As I siad I checked with the additive maker to check it was OK, with Dex III. Pump is origanil, but was rebuilt by dealer at around 60,000. Car now at 120,000 miles. Belts are dealer installed and all seem ok. Only way to know for sure would be to pull the belt, but belts have been inspected. And again noise is only issue. Works fine and never had any lose of fliud. I will try the sprying of lub on the system. What should I use? Just a good spry lub or???? I use "Break Free" as a spry lub. It has teflon in it and does not gum up over time like WD 40.
  22. Did that when I flushed the system, I also added an inline filter about 6 months ago. I pulled and cleaned that (it had almost nothing in it). Also the system has been working fine. No hard or dead spots. But this noise just started the other day. Agian system seems fine other then that. Have power at all RPM's and even idle. Can turn wheel lock to lock with one finger with car runing, at idle in park. No leaks etc.. Just this whinning noise. Very high pitched.
  23. My 91 ls 400 is making a high pitched whining sound. It rises with the rpm. My mechanic looked the car over and checked for a vacuum leak. None found. He then told me it was the power steering pump. Noise changes when you move the steering wheel left to right. Told me to get some additive made to "stop noise or quite things" I found some stuff made by Lucas Oil. I called them and they stated would be OK for LS 400, and would help the whining. The fact that I have no leaks and this is also a stop leak would not matter. Bought a bottle. When I pulled the line to drain the reservoir I flushed the system and put in new fluid with the additive. I have not yet really drove the car (only 5 miles) so it still makes noise.... Your thoughts on this?
  24. 91 ls did not hold codes as I understand it.... and as I was only goingabout 20 mph and car was jerking etc., I would not haave felt it *BLEEP*ing or not
  25. Almost forgot, I just did the struts all around on my 91 LS400. Whent with KYB. They make the OEM Lexus shocks. Paid around $60.00 each?? Got a deal on line on ebay. Prive and stuff was good, but seller got nasty on the feedback becouse in the feedback I left for him a stated good stuff good price, but did not respond to my e-mails. And for that the guy has black balled me from his listings. I'm real happy with the KYB shocks. Paid about $250 to get all four installed at a locale shop.
