  1. I've replaced the pads on my 91 before-quite simple. My wife's 96 now need new pads. I haven't a manual for the 96-is the insatllation the same as for a 91? Thanks Steve
  2. I thought I was low on R12 - Not the case A/C shop says that compressor is turning but not working Is this possible? I thought compressor either ran or didn't. They want $1100.00 for after market rebuilt compressor, dryer, hose, evaporator and conversion fittings for R134. Any input appreciated. Thanks Steve
  3. Monarch - Thanks for the tip - I just ordered some on ebay Is there a thread showing how to install? Thanks again.
  4. Thanks for the input guys. I'd like to keep the old style freon in there because it does seem to work better but it is becoming a rare commodity in California. Steve
  5. My 91 A/C was bowing warm air - local mechanic had some of the "old" freon and put it in. This was about 2 months ago - same problem - mechanic say to upgrade to R-34( or whatever newer, acceptable freon is) will run between $300 - $600. I had my 88 Jaguar converted a few years ago and all they replaced were some fittings total was a little over $100. What's the deal with Lexus? Any help, advice appreciated.
  6. We bought our 91 new and currently has 198000 miles. Excluding routine maintenance (tires, brakes, etc.) we have had no problems other than air conditioner compressor at about 80K - A few recommendations: 1 - Ask for service records-make sure care has been well cared for - auto detailers can make an abused car look good. 2 - Find a good independent mechanic that know Lexus' - you don't want to take to a dealer-too expensive 3 - Have car checked out before buying by reputable mechanic or dealer I believe most Lexus' are well maintained and if your's is you should be able to go to 300K Good Luck
  7. I had the same thing happen to my wife's LS 400 in a "Park n' Ride" lot. I called local company that replaces windshields - they ordered glass, and replaced at my home for $300 - check your yellow pages - good luck. Steve
  8. I bought a 91 LS new and now have 198K miles - just replaced timeing belt and did major tune up, collant flush, tranny flush etc - Car runs ad drives (almost) same as it did 14 years ago. Expect to get at least 300K miles. Al long as the car was maintained well it shoud be fine. I would have an independent check it out. Good luck.
  9. Took my wife's 96 LS to the Oil Change / Car wash Saturday - apparently after changing oil & checking fluids the mechanic tried to start car and right side of battery blew off (very loud) - they claim they did nothing wrong but while the guy is removing my destroyed battery he's smoking a cigarette!!! I mentioned perhaps this was not the brightest thing to do. Anyway, had to go drop $120.00 for a new battery and car is running fine. The battery was from LEXUS and out of warranty. Has anyone else had this happen? Very strange. Steve
  10. Memphis -= Sounds high to me but then Pep Boys are notorious for calling you after you leave your car with add ons. I have a one man shop who takes care of my LS400 - Last time in new timing belt, water pump, full tune up, tranny flush, cooling flush, oil change, rotate tires, for $780.00. No offense but I wouldn't trust the Pep Boys in San Diego with my Lexus. Hope everything works ok for you.

  14. I found a reptutable independent garage in my area by asking other Lexus owners I would see while out and about. One particular mechanic was the clear "winner" with many of the folks I talked to. We to see him, set an appointment for my 91 LS400. He did full tune up, oil change, transmission service, coolant flush, timing belt, (said water pump was fine so he didn't change), drive belt, etc. for $795.00! There are still honest mechanics out there...you just have to ask a few "friends" Good Luck B) ← Hey Steve, I'm in San Diego as well and would like to obtain the contact info for the reputable independant garage that you've highly praised. Thanks. ←
  15. I live in a suburb of San Diego and had the same problem. I started asking other Lexus drivers in my area (grocery store, mall, etc.) The older the driver (50 & over) the better the referrals since people my age tend to get tired of being ripped off by dealers. Give it a try, I think you'll find a good independent close by. Good luck.
