sorry to say guys hear me out please ...i tested my car and found that its eating my money alive ...my gas tank was fulll ... and its only gave me 145 mile thats all and i used ..gas rated 89" .... umm its really bad isnt it ? seem like at the beganing of the run i have to press the gas paddel harder for it to run after like 30 second its run great !!. and then its good to go ...umm what could be the problem what should i do and what should i look into?? any advice would help thanks and its ls 400 1991.....!!!

When was the last time you did some general maintenance to your car? Use higher octane fuel... maybe throw in some chevron fuel system cleaner in your next fill up.

I advise plug wires, plugs, check your neg. ground to the body, New air filter, Clean your maf sensor, and clean your throttle body. ;)

nothing beats a regular maintenace performed, so do the obvious as stated above replies youll be surprised at the results, good luck

1.its been week i flush +fill my engine . 2. its been 2 months i change the air filter and i cleand the fuel injector about month ago at the lube express. just to let u guys know -- 89 octane gave me 135 and 91 octane gave me 144 .. i try both ummm i never did the general maintenance ..... ..ok i will try that thanks !---sorry guys im not fan of lexus . have Maxima. but brought cus dad want my 1998 mexima so thats my 1st lexus even its 1991 .. sorry to say i dont know much abt cars i just take to mechanick but lexus they wanna . nissan and toyota is way cheaper . ummm i dont know what els to say

This has nothing to do with your gas mileage (presuming you are referring to your engine coolant).

Changing the air filter will help a little, so will the lube express "pour in the pint of fuel injector cleaner", but obviously not nearly enough to solve the problem you are experiencing.

Regardless of which grade of gasoline you use, you are getting roughly seven miles to the gallon. This means that there is something seriously wrong. When your gas mileage is that bad, the reason should jump out at your mechanic.

With all due respect, I'm tempted to wonder whether or not you are "trying to pull the wool over our eyes". There's nothing subtle, or in question about the fact that your mileage is terrible and something is seriously wrong. The good news is that when things are this far out of whack, they are easier to find and solve (should be anyway).

Having owned 3 Lexi over the course of 12 years, I will say that you only have a right to expect good things from the vehicle if you take care of it properly. It's a bit dis-ingenuous to say that you're not a fan of it when there's something obviously wrong with it that needs attention. Once you get it fixed, you'll become much, much happier with it. This board is full of people that have been down that path before you, myself included.

I think you need to find a new mechanic. If he can't find the reason that a car that should be getting at least 20 mpg and is only getting 7 mpg, it's time.........

Are you willing/capable of performing any of the above tasks? If you're willing to break a sweat and tackle it yourself then you're going to help your wallet out. If you're willing take it to the dealer then be prepared to bend over and get raped.

It seems that a lot of people are facisnated with taking their cars to the dealership, for repairs. Dealership technicians are no better than a good indie auto shop. Trust me, I've seen bonehead diagnostic and attempted repairs done by "qualified" dealership technicians.

Lex92 bro you are the best ....i mean ur right abt dealer and reguler ...mechanic...so ur saying to clean and check ? "check your neg. ground to the body, New air filter, Clean your maf sensor, and clean your throttle body" will that make the car back to normal speed i mean 20 mpg? one more thing can anyone tell me where is my NEG? located and throttle body with a pic please thanks alot .... i know its sound funny that im asking but thats the only way to learn from you guys !

I'm not positive that cleaning the above parts will bring your car back to 20/mpg but it doesn't hurt to clean it anyways. It's hard to do a remote diagnostic so I'd rather not say.

145 miles to a tank are horrible numbers. Have you checked for fuel leaks yet?

guys really need some fast replay .. please please... i took it to zaap lube .. and the clean it for me for free they cleand MY maf sensor, and clean MY Both throttle body. but now there is something wrong .. when they clean everything went inside i mean the sprays... i asked em if it was ok they said yea .. it will go out by tail pipe when I start the car .. is it okay ? well guess what then they start the car and the "check engine light" came on also "track off" light came on and the engine ideal high and low time to time.. they said i have to drive then its gonna be okay cuz the carbon needs to go out .. guys is it normal? .. after they told me there is something wrong with my car .. they told me i have ----2 "throttle body" one is at the beganing .. and one is at the end(close to engine block) the front on(close the maf senos) always stay open .. and its clean.. . but inside one was really dirty and closed ..now they said .. the 1st "throttle body" shouldnt be open .. it should be close and open while you press gas paddel just like 2nd one... when i press gas paddel second one (inside one) open but the front one stay open it doesnt close ... is it normal? is it supose to be open while 2nd one is stay close?.. please tell me and help me .. thanks alot ! but now the car run .. really fast but stop and slow down suddenly they said its due to .. carbon inside i have to dive it out .. please let me know what you guys think?..anyone--?????

Did they scrape the carbon deposits off? It might be acting funny because some of the carbon flakes are stuck on the spark plug or something. It's probably better if you take it back to them because they shouldn't have returned the car to you in that condition.

okay guys ... i didnt get my ans ... however all the check light are off now after spending 6 Doller gas .. by pressing gas peddel down .. to drive the carbon out now its runs like new ..how ever as my mechanic told me ... there is something wrong with my 1st "throttle body" which is the 1st one from the airflow monifold .. when they open to clean it .. they saw the 1st "throttle body" was open while the 2nd "throttle body" was close he said it wond save gas by cleaning it cus the 1st "throttle body" supose to be closeing and open just like 2nd "throttle body" when you press the gas paddel .. the 2nd "throttle body" open when you press the gas but 1st "throttle body" always stay open .. is it normal or i need to get it fix? guys they test it while the engine was off .. however .. so please tell me .. eventhough car runs smooth and great now they said it wont save gas cus 1st "throttle body" is not working .. so please you guys tell me is it supose to like that .. or is it supose to open and close just like .. 2nd one .. one more thing when they open the "throttle body" to clean the 1st "throttle body" was clean while the 2nd one was really dirty? .. does it help? do i need to fix? if so how much im looking for ? many many thanks guys ! it will be help full if i fast respond !

I highly advise you to do your own research on your car in these forums, These forums are packed with more info than you need now. Educate yourself on your car. And ask specific q's only if you need to. This is the best advice I can give you over the net. Self education first. ;)

I don't have TRAC, but it makes sense to me that the first one was clean. Sub-throttle inspection and adjustment starts in the middle of Page 11 of the following attachment:

im back in busniess after spending $1000 lol ... cleaning fule injector... body throtel + 2 engine mount + 1 transmission mount at the dealer its runs great ! abt gas milage the dealer cant even help .. they said even some band new cars comeing with complain abt runing low gas milage its natural for car but its sure help me .. doing all this car is good now .. thank you guys !!!!

heheh .. nha the cars run better and got better gas mile then 7mpg ! however yes ... he did all that for exacty $850 which include taxes.. what he did was .. full fuel system service and fuel injector cleaner + throtel body ..2 engine mount 1 transmission mount .. insfaction allover the car for anyloss or necessery repair or parts .. not only that. he even .. fix my .. cluster neddel cuz it was stuck lol ... and advice me to buy plug +wire and do it my self or mechanic lol ... i guess is all that cuz the guy was from my country hehe lol .... but once again it was at the dealer lol ... so gave him a $50 doller tip.. which bring it to total of $900 hehe was it allrite? worth it ? oh man its runs reat ..and the engine is so smooth lol im loving it .. he told me any problem just take it to him and he will t.c of me lol .. i guess its worth that i went to dealer for the 1st time hhee .. anyways guyss it was great !!!!! .

Tak'n your Lexus to a Jiffy Lube type facility for trouble shooting as you described doesn't make sense. There are plenty of Lexus Dealer-Services that do a Great Job and when you get to know the Service Technicians... they are empowered to give you some great discounts. Such is Dean DeCastro of Lexus of Serramonte... always treated me excellent when servicing and troubleshooting my 92 LS 400 Air Suspension.... rides better than are 2004 LS 430.

The Time and Aggravation just isn't worth it. Time is Money!!!
