Sorry and I'm not trying to offend anyone here, but WTF would make you want to put 20+ inch rims on your LS?????

As I was driving back into the office park on my way back to the office today I noticed a sweet 3rd gen LS400. This car was completely pristine with a nice aftermarket dark green paint job, and nice tint. The shine on the paint looked like there were 2 coats of clearcoat and wax on it and there was not a scratch, smear, smudge or mark on the car anywhere. The car was really sweet except I thought that something looked a little wierd as I was approaching it.

When I got along side it I noticed some huge moon disc chrome rims (which I don't care for all that much in any size) with little rubber-band tires , BUT the rims were so big that they actually lifted the car off the groung and made the car ride at least 2" higher than normal (I'm guessing 22's). WTF was this guy thinking? Not only has he killed the ride quality, but it looks completely ridiculous lifted up like that.

Sorry for the rant but I had to get it out.

The only way that works is if the car is slammed and the tires are tucked into the wheelwell so the top of the fender covers the top of the tire. Only for show though..... I remember when MOONS were the hot thing, There kind of like the bluejeans of wheels. There never IN and never OUT.

:D Hahaha. I like the 1989 Ford Escorts with 20 inch spinners! I mean if the only lien on your car "because it's so old and worth $500" is for your rims???? That just kills me every time!:lol::lol:

It is all about personal preferance.

I don't like anything over 20 inch rims on anything but trucks.

I think rims are just like clothes, just because a man can wear pink if he wanted to does not mean they should.I personally hate seeing men in pink ,i have a deep rooted bias that pink belongs on women and homosexuals posing as women.Again just my personal feelings.

In respects to 20's on an LS i love the right type of rim on the cars. To me they have to follow the same type of body lines and curve .This way the 2 styles of desgin flow together not completly stand out .

They also have to follow the theme of the car meaning a set of racing inspired rims have no place on a pure luxury car. 90% of rims that look great on an GS look like !Removed! on a LS .

I also have O.Z. opera 2 peice staggared 20's with a silver painted face and polished lip for my LS . It seems i may not get my spacers soon to install them before winter anyway.

MY rim in 1 peice

Here is a pic of a LS that to me looks beutiful, it is lowered nicely has a deep dish and says luxury so that it has no place on a "supra" lets say.

BTW this guy is selling his rims on CL but they are only 19's

thanks for you honest opinion sw, hey sk as you must already know since you have the pic of the car im talking to the guy about possibly buying that rim but he said that it hassome kind of damga and im not quite sure if itsworth the trouble. the price is good though

didn't like those rims on the black car, maybe if it was moving, but i like the 20" one piece. it'd look best in chrome. i think large shiny rims look good on LS' as long as the look good spinning and dont look like spoke racing tires. unless that's what youre into? :chairshot:

thats a 19in staggered setup, but i think hes running a bigger tire than what is recommended. i think chrome would be better also but i could do the polished look

I much prefer the OZ wheels SK posted (don't care for the rims on the black car), much better suited to the LS IMHO.

Hey,

Sorry to barge in on an LS topic here but I have the same thoughts on rims in general no matter what car they're on...

That said I've got 17" GS400 rims on my '92 SC400 and LOVE them. I don't understand people that say things like 18's look too small. Sign of the times I guess, when I was playing around with old Supras and MR2s a 17" rim was the big thing and the first guy to have 18's had HUGE rims.

I don't understand the want/need/desire to go with something that will lower ride quality, add weight, add cost, and make your brakes look smaller.

I've got 245/45R17's on my rims, and there's about 2.5" of sidewall (I know the math doesn't work out but that's the visible sidewall)...

Anyway, end rant...

Unless you know how much it is going to fix before you buy them ,don;t do it.

If he says it is one price, tell him to get them fixed for that price and you will include it in your buying price.

BUT SHA i am sorry to tell you those rims will not fit your 98 ,you have a Big Brake caliper !. That is the determining factory for every rim you look at .So unless you get a set of spacers which are $100-150 then a few hundred to remove the hubs form the car and use a 5 ton press to press out and press in the new longer studs .

Again the same thing with chrome , if used properly it can give some amazing results. If thrown on everything and anything then it better be a show car.I am not driving a car to get the most or any looks .So i do not want bling as it onlty attracts the dumbest of people who sparkly things look nice to .Those are the same people who tend to not have and want yours, i am not even going to get into that game again.I have chrome rims on my ES and i wish they were black for the stupid stares i get.

that means the 98 calipers are bigger than his and i def. dont want to add spacers. but i did check that rim out on a site and they had it in a list of wheels that would fit my car but in 18s i thought it was bugged b/c they didnt have it in 19. ill ask the guy if he uses any spacers if not im patient ill just keep looking. by theway what do you guys think of the staggered setup on the ls. sw your opinion is always welcome

sc_toy i agree with the gs rims on the sc! when i get mine, that's the first thing i'm gonna do. i feel that the rims have to agree with the kind of car. big rims go on big cars(22" on tahoes and esclades) and so on. but i feel that spokes (5-10 not 100-150) work best on performance cars, bcuz you get to see the "slotted and cross drilled rotors, and the big brake kit upgrades, and blah, blah, blah!" but for the LS... why would you want to ruin something that took years to R&D? they keep LS wheels medium for a reason. ride quality, prestige and tire longevity. that's why i got my LS, smooth, clean, but not over the top, just like me! :D

just my thoughts... but the main thing is, where you at? different people are raised under different rules and for some "if your wheels aren't legal(18"), go home!" but for others you can have the inside plush to the max, and ride on factory's

The 90-91 LS used a one piston caliper, in 92-94, they upgraded to two piston calipers (93's got bigger rotors, if im not mistaken). In 95, Another upgrade to 4-piston calipers..... So they are much bigger then the 1st gen brakes.

i personally dontlike the way that rim looks on that car. i dont know if its the size or that particular rim. it looks too big for the car.

1 that rim is nasty

It looks like a hey look at me rim ,it doesn't matter what car that person has they would want an overly flashy rim.

I hate that style of wheel that tries to look expensive because it "BLINGS". Reminds me of cubic zirconias fake as the owner is.

i was just rying to be politically correct, that rim is ugly sk o class at all. i like chrome but not like thatand it looks cheap.sorry nc i hope thats not your car

LOL that thing looks like an offroading vehicle! Sha, that's a second gen, btw... third gen is the LS430. ;)

I have no problems with 20s on an LS but it depends on the setup. You just CANNOT get away with 20s and no drop/mild kit. Although personal tastes vary, I agree that the rims in the pic NC211 posted do not fit the class of an LS. Plus, since the "spokes" are right up against the edge with no lip, the wheel looks even bigger. :(
