  1. dude I'm in school full time, and have 2 jobs (ebay business with brother and stupid restaurant with dad, both very high stress) and i commute a ton! I drive about 2500(at least) miles a month which averages to about 20 mpg and $3 pg for premium. that comes out to almost $400 a month on gas. I don't pay for all my gas but i still feel the pain after i look at the amex bill. Which is why I'm gonna retire my LS to spare car/cruiser. I put too many miles on it. Also my LS needs alot of work. My rear suspension is bad. I need new springs and struts and every single bushing imaginable. Actually i think i need to replace all the suspension. So I think i'm just gonna replace the bushings. and slowly restore this car's suspension. My replacement vehicle is gonna be a little 96 honda civic LX 4dr manual trans. It needs a clutch job but otherwise is is really good cond. I think i'll cut my gas spending in half or almost half. And I'll have a little more fun doing it too. I love stick shift!
  2. Ok you guys this is just uncanny and weird. So my fan bracket siezed at the beginning of NOV (replaced with new). My friends Fan bracket disintegrated at the end of nov (replaced with used pull a part). Now my mom's fan bracket is dieing and my friends used bracket is going bad too! is that just weird??????? 4 brackets all going bad within a month of eachother?
  3. we bought 4 lexus's off ebay. my white 93 ls, my sisters jade 94 ls, my purple manual 92 es300, and my moms opal white 94. all except mine were second chance offers due to a dead beat bidders. All amazing deals. The LS400's came from chicago, Philly, and Newark. The ES came from tampa. I took risks and on carfaxed the cars but generally have been successful. I only buy private party.
  4. i actually called JM lexus and a tech guy said he though it was 90% fan related. Sure enough it was the fan bracket dying. It disintegrated on saturday. We got a junkyard replacement and all is dandy.
  5. i just replaced the fan bracket on my friends 92 ls and let me tell you its a !Removed!. I can believe within weeks of each other both of our fan brackets went bad!!!!!! I could do it quicker if i ever have to do it again but, the first time is tough. So many bolts and covers and other random things to take off. Plus using a small desk lamp as a light is kinda tough! thankfully i had some help.
  6. except there's no vibration when the belt is off.
  7. Hey yall! I hope everybody's cars are doing ok. I have a problem with a friend of mines LS400. Ok her tensioner pulley went bad so she got a replacement from autozone. Autozone's part didn't fit correctly (didnt spin) and overheated the serp belt. So we replaced the pulley with a used OEM one and replaced her belt as well. I checked all the pulleys and fan bracket. All move smoothly. But the engine feels strained and for some reason there is lots of vibration. So i wanted to make sure the engine is ok and removed the serp belt and started the car. Smooth as butter(lexus smooth) I put the belt back on and vibration is back! all the pulleys move fine! I'm thinking the tensioner could be going bad. Mainly because her boyfriend put the austozone pulley and it started seizing to the point where it stopped spinning (for two days!... maybe). So maybe it put a ton of stress on the tensioner and wore it out and now its either too tight or not tight enough? Another possibility is the belt might be marginally bigger or smaller since its not OEM Toyota (cheapo autozone brand) and causing the vibration? Anybody got some insight? Is the tensioner easy to take off? Thanks so much
  8. oh ok, well if there are any ls400's in ATL area that you're interested in buying just shoot me a message. I'll take a look at it. why would you pay taxes on the black car. looks like a private owner. the gold LS seems like a better deal (still steep) but who's gonna give you a loan on a 11 year old car with almost 200k? i would stay with a clean 1st gen for less than half the price. Is the LS gonna be a daily driver?
  9. hey dude! do you want me to go check out that ls400 for you? cumming is not far from atlanta athens area. i know ls400's man. we own 4. and my good friend has one too so, i'm very familar wth them. did you ever call about this LS? http://atlanta.craigslist.org/car/477844683.html i sent you a pm
  10. Dude if you get the 94 anniversary edition, i'll trade my regular wheels for those wheels. Or just outright buy em. i'd rather trade though, easier for both of us. I could meet you at a sam's club and we could both get new tires, and new(to us) rims. whatdya think?
  11. That 94 is an anniversary edition. go with that one. I'm gonna get flamed but... i wouldn't change the timing belt till it breaks on my car. If you keep good anti-freeze and do regular flushes you rolly wont need to worry about the water pump either. If i ain't broke... dont fix it. That 94 is gorgeous. Those wheels fill out the wheel wells nicely too. My dad and i picked one up just like your 94 for my mom back in may. Her's was a one owner. only 143k. got it for 3k. BUT it had been wrecked before, the rear bumper needs a respray and it needed a major tune up. ( coolant flush, wires, plugs, caps, rotors, thermostat) and some rear carrier bushings. I love th car. the color is a silvery pearl white. stunning! She loves her car too. And the interior is 99% perfect. It had 5 brand new michelins too! So i think the 94 is your best bet. Its the prettiest too and looks like it has 50k on it. not 200k+ my 93 just turned 240k and some pulleys seized and broke the serpentine belt. Otherwise no probs in 30k rough miles
  12. I have a first gen (93) Besides defects (like the cupholder cover's breaking, Seat backs coming loose, Weak Door handles, Climate control and speedo probs) 1. I wish the seats were firmer (like a 95's) and had more side bolsters. 2. I'd like a little more wood(not gaudy, just a little more) 3. I'd like a smaller, thicker steering wheel. 4. More interior ambient lighting (like under the seats for rear passengers and in the center console) 5. A switch to turn on all interior lights 6. LED 3rd brake light (gs300's had em, why not top dog ls400s?) 7. Interior lights turn on when unlocking car 8. More storage space! 9. Bigger glovebox 10. Electronic info center for instant and avg fuel econ, and other systems (like a 98 LS, or any caddy or BMW 5-series since 1980) 11. Better headlights and integrated fogs in the bumper. I know all these probs were fixed by 98 or 2001, except the GIANT steering wheel. I still love my car. And will be getting another one in the future.
  13. yea man, the extra two switches on top of the etc power switch are for air suspension. You could replace em with regular struts but that's like an extra $700 plus installation. Best to avoid IMHO. Unless they've just been replaced.. then it would be an ok buy for 3k. no more though.
  14. dude, it has air suspension. I would not pay 5-6 grand for a 15-17 year old LS. you could get a 95 for that price. You could get a 98 for 7-8k so i would wait. Hand them Edmunds TMV. TMV is about 3k for a loaded 91 with 180k. http://www.edmunds.com/used/1991/lexus/ls4...ction=vdpresult
  15. So my car had its first break down today. I'm pretty sad that my car broke down but at least i wasn't stranded on the side of the road. The serpentine belt broke because the fan pulley and the drive belt pulley both seized on me. I noticed a knocking sound and was freaking out but was really far from home. My car just turned 240k today so i've driven 30k in 1 year and 4 months. They've been some serene trouble free miles so I'm pretty pleased. Its only gonna be about $200 in parts and a couple hours labor. I think its pretty DIY. I'm still in love with my car. But i have one break down under my belt... oh well.
  16. hey mike, I'm glad my comparo helped. All i did was put a larger 194 size bulb in the side marker light. Its much brighter and gives decent cornering illumination. Fits perfect with no mods! its not silverstar white but looks pretty good to my eyes. 194 really looks so much better than the smaller 168 bulbs.
  17. my 93 ls400 has 240k on it. needs bushings, motor and tranny mounts, an oil change, differential fluid change, new ps fluid, maybe some new tranny fluid, tires, an alignment. sounds like a lot but its really all maintenance. Not that bad considering i bought the car 1.5 years ago for $2175 with 210k on the clock from ebay. Has NEVER failed to start. EVER. No PS probs. Only changed the passenger side power door lock actuator, driver side door handle, and the radio. Pretty amazing considering the car is now 14 years old. The car still looks good when i polish and detail it. Leather only has cracks, no rips. We now have 3 ls400's. All are amazing. 1 93 and 2 94's
  18. yes. All ls400's all the way from 1990 to the 2008 ls460. Genuine wood. :)
  19. Western Canada here, Northern Alberta. I had a small amount of rust above the rear left wheel well. Just grinded it out, filled with fiberglass, smoothed with bondo, and repainted. Good as new. :) 1991 LS 400 =D No salt on the roads here.. lots of snow thou. :) I did the same thing on my chicagoan ls400! the rust was in the same place. weird. Places to look out for rust, 1, underbody 2 rear wheel wells 3 front fenders
  20. i actually liked the 500, the way it looked anyway. Apparently the new Taurus is a very good car. Strong, quiet, fast and decently priced. I really want the domestics to get their act together and this is a good step. At least its different looking. I think the taurus x's (restyled freestyle) headlights would've matched better.
  21. i just got a garmin nuvi 660. Its awesome. it was $600 but well worth it. I travel alot and I'm always on the go. It has bluetooth, traffic,an fm transmitter and an MP3 player, along with a couple other niceties. Personally i'm still a fan of cassette adapters so all i do is connect it through the adapter, pair it with my phone through bluetooth, and load up my mp3's on it. I was gonna get a basic tomtom but after i tried out this thing... i couldnt give up the features from the NUVI. I LOVE the Points of interest too. I was in augusta ga the other day and was craving some Chinese food on a budget. Found one 3 miles away. Even called em through my phone with bluetooth. Except for the unsightly chords i absolutely love portable gps systems.
  22. i love that i can go 104mph and not know it. I love that it has 231k miles on it and only needs bushings and a tune up. I love that ive put 21k miles on it in 13 months and not a single mechanical failure on it. or electrical. its 14 years old! i'm a lexus fan for life. at least the early lexus.
  23. you can't get a virtual manual for your 92. call lexus and have em send you a new manual. for free!
  24. i think most lexus vehicles are supposed to have their timing belts changed at 90k, along with the water pump and other stuff. sorry but i'm kinda confused about the pump question. is there any other way to hold the handle?
