  1. My parents bought a new LeSabre in 1986, and it ran 9 years and 200,000+ miles with no trouble at all, and that doesn't seem out of the ordinary based on what I read on the Buick forum. It would probably still be around if it didn't get crashed; it was a terrific car--no timing belt, no power steering problems, no bushing problems, just a good solid car! JD Power put Buick right up there with Lexus: http://www.usatoday.com/money/economy/2007...004645328_x.htm Lexus might be the most "reliable," but that doesn't mean they don't have their fair share of problems that aren't cheap to fix like the number of electrical problems, the fussy suspension components, timing belts, etc. A timing belt service and a new steering rack can replace anything you want to on a Buick...twice.Who reads Consumer Reports anymore?? They wouldn't say something bad about a Honda or Toyota if someone had a gun to their heads. LOL thanks for backing me up. I love lexus, but you gotta give praise when its deserved. get either car. they are both good/great in different aspects. really just depends on budget and preference. its all you dude.
  2. buick makes some of the most reliable cars on the road. Maybe not lexus reliable, but close. My dad has an 92 olds 88. car hass 320k on original engine and tranny. car still feels solid. No need to bash american when you dont know. Buick has some of the lowest problems per 100 in the industry as well. I beleive the buick century was rated most reliable vehicle too. A century is a sedated regal.
  3. i fill up at or around 250 miles now. it's about 12 gallons for me. it's all a psychological thing. $50 doesn't scare me as much.
  4. for 6k, go with a medium mileage 95+ ls400. they are even more reliable than 1st gens. they also get slightly better gas mileage, and better headlights. Pretty much everything is just a bit better.
  5. dude, sounds like a super deal. Grab it while you can.
  6. i ended up not getting the car. my next car is gonna be a nice clean 5-speed civic ex. i just need to find a 96+ for a good price. $80 fillups are scaring me a bit.
  7. i've wanted these wheels for so long! i just can't justify spending the dough. My car isn't clean enough, and has 255k now.
  8. lucky kid yo! Your friends must be real jealous of your pimp ride. an ls430 isnt much slower than a 350z!
  9. Did you ever fix this? my LS has just started to have the same symptoms. is there anyway to just disable it? The shift lock works intermittently. Usually after 2-3 minutes.
  10. Take it from someone who's family has wasted so much money, but never on anything nice.... buy what you can afford and don't look back. If it makes you happy do it. Thats what life is about, the pursuit of happiness. If i were you, i would fix up those little probs, and keep that lex a cherry. Land crusiers are super expensive. Mileage seems to have no effect on price. Also Can you imagine spending more than a quarter per mile driven on fuel?? (27 cents) If you dont drive alot, i guess it doesnt matter.
  11. hey guys, so i was drivin the other day and i passed a used car place. yes i know they are terrible. Anyway, i saw a black 95 LS in the Value Lot. so i looked and it had a price of$3600! It was very clean, 60-70 percent tread and all. I checked online and the car does have 260k on it. But its in what i would call clean. From 20 feet away the car looks great. Leather is very good. I talked to the guy on the phone and he seems deperate to get rid of it. Got it as a trade but could not sell due to high mileage. he says everybody is interested in it until they hear 260k. If it were any other car i wouldn't even consider. But we all know LS400's last much longer than 260k. So i talked to him and i think i can get it for around 2.6-3k tax included. Should i even bother? he says if he doesnt sell it this week he's takin it to the dealer auction. I think it might be a nice upgrade from my not so clean 93. Opinions?
  12. glad you got it fixed and didnt give up on the Lexy! :)
  13. you should be able to get an immaculate 120k mileage car with that budget. or you could get a clean 2nd gen for about the same price with higher mileage. Dont let mileage scare you. If its been maintained these cars DONT age. i've seen 200k ls400's that honestly look new or 2 years old. Actually i would get a 2nd gen because they are lighter and get better mileage and other minor improvments.
  14. in the past 2 years of driving my LS i've only seen 2 on the side of the road. thats means alot too because i drive alot(about 25k a year). And i see a ton of 1st gens on the road here in the Metro Atlanta area. I saw 4 just on the way to the bank. I hate seeing neglected ls400's, especially when i think how magnificent they once were, and how much effort went into building such a good car. Other neglected cars don't bother me as much. They still do though, i have alot of mechanical sympathy.
  15. you'd win. easy peasy. Just put on etc power and floor it.
  16. there is only one way to get to the bolts. Depending on which bolts, you need to move the seat all the way forward or backward to gain access.
  17. did your tune up include new caps and rotors? my mom's ls had a light misfire, that new sparks, wires, caps, and rotors solved. the car is a beast now.
  18. must be a k40, which was not stock. Can you take pics of the radar detector, i heard it was installed so well, it seemed OEM from factory.
  19. you would need the door cladding, along with side-skirts, 93-94 bolder/fatter. its also painted. nott worth it IMO, unless you get it from a junked 93-94, and they are same silver color. also, i dont know if they are bolt on, but i wouldn't see why they wouldnt be.
  20. Blake, you drive so much! I thought my 25k a year was a ton, but i think you leave me in the dust. Everytime i see you post your mileage goes up by 5k. Back to main post.... congrats man! you'll love your lex. I wish i had the money for a newer mint LS.
  21. 252k on my 93 here. Poor thing still soldiers on. Idles low, and i prolly need new engine mounts along with a major tune up(still original wires). Otherwise still runs 90%. Seems to be smooth, until you compare it to my mom's 94 with 150k. She has new mounts, and a full tune up. That engine is super smooth! Don't get mad at me guys, but i don't think i'm really gonna invest alot of money in my ol LS. Just isnt worth it. I mean, i got her for only 2 grand almost 2 years ago. I'm just gonna keep driving it until i get something nicer and newer. Then it'll retire to a spare car. I'll never sell her. She was my first lexus. Also, as of recently i've been kinda low on the dough. 75 dollar fillups hurt.
  22. i'd get a cleaner lower mileage LS430 for 16k. 4k is alot, but your gonna spend quite a bit on the timing belt and water pump, new tires and other random little things. Or i'd get an immaculate 98-00 ls400 for the 12k Don't let high miles scare you though. :) if it checks out 12k seems pretty good. Define fair body for us :)
  23. dude, sucks that the exact same thing happened to me and my friend with my junkyard experience. except my junkyard one cost $16. I'm not trying to add salt to the wound. I'm just sayin. At least you can do it yourself and don't have to pay someone... twice. weird how fan brackets seem to die around the same time huh
  24. Im in trouble. I checked my LS's PPV there and they value it at $1499! Looks like I got a bum deal! I paid $3200 for mine. <_< They show retail @ $2652 and trade-in @ only $816! The timing belt/water pump replacement 13K ago alone was $1300. On the other hand, they value my old Tundra @ $9118 for PPV and I sold it for $10500, which I personally still think was too cheap. don't sweat it. I think its values are so low because our cars are aging. Also there is lower demand for these old things now with high gas prices. I wish i could find a decent LS for $1500. Even old 89 civic's bring $1500 on craigslist. Edmunds is almost a slap in the face. But i use it because i never sell cars, only buy :)
