Wisdom Teeth

so basically my windom teeth which never came out are starting to right now...bleh...and my appointment is this tuesday to have them removed...they are impacted! Im facing a few problems here because i have a slight phobia of needles and the idea of being IV sedated doesnt square well with me. I chose the best surgeon in san francisco, its costing me a few limbs, which im hoping he will take off while im sedated :whistles: but what im asking is...any comfort from someone who has had the operation or has been sedated. I have never been under that type of drug (hehe) and im not looking forward to it as i mentioned. I have limited knowledge of what happens and as i said, fear of needles here...so i read somewhere that they put it in yoir arm or back of the hand.

Any comforting stories to help my nerves...??

Oh, and i might mention i had a doctors appointment yesterday and my blood pressure, which is usually normal is off the charts... :censored:

thanks *taps hand of table repeatedly anxiously awaiting replies*

lol, dont sweat it, it wont hurt at all, if you can, just bring your ipod or something, put on a nice song, and turn it up just to where you can bearly hear the doctors say something, you dont even notice when it comes out and the only time it even *stings* is when they...well...you know...the needles....lol jk, nothin to sweat relax,

If it helps , my wife worked in an endo office for 9 years so all they did was root canals. Get an endo specialist who does nothing else and it will be a short and quick procedure although it can be done over 3 appointments. They never sedated anyone just local anaesthetic with novocaine.

oral surgery, right? My dad's got his wisom teeth pulled a couple years ago. He said he didn't feel a thing but obviously you have to have anesthesia injection, which is the only pain you would feel. Otherwise, it's going to be ok. The dentist or doctor, or both, that my dad went to, is an MD also. I heard that there's only like 3 of them here in fresno that is like him. There's gotta be a ton of them in San Francisco.

Relax, don't worry. After that, you get to eat (or drink i should say) a nice milkshake. ;)

If it makes you feel any better I had all 4 pulled at the same time and they had to chisle out the bottom 2. It wasn't that bad at all ( so take it easy on yourself ) The next day I had to load a 26 foot moving truck alone and drive 400 miles then unload. Even after all the stress and pressure I put on the stitches there was no problem. Let us know how it goes.

I had all four removed at the same time way back in the summer of 1973 (I was 19) well before today's high-tech equipment, drugs, and procedures. My biggest concern was that I had an AAU basketball tournament championship game that night and the coaches still expected me to start at center. No pain, but the sutured wounds bled solidly throughout the game. The trainers packed my entire mouth with gauze, changed the blood-and-saliva-soaked gauze at every timeout, and my natural adrenalin pulled me through. The biggest challenge was breathing through all that gauze but I figured it out after a few minutes. We won the league tournament that night and that made it all worthwhile. With today's blood-control rules in sports, the refs probably wouldn't allow a player in the game under those conditions. But I'm still proud of playing the entire game under those conditions with no one having to spell me even for a couple of minutes.

So relax and just get through the procedure. If it's performed properly, you won't feel a thing. But you should expect some soreness and bleeding over the following couple of days. Schedule some downtime if you can and eat soft foods and liquids for the first three or four days. You'll be fine before you know it....

Just make sure to tell one of the girls you don't wanna know when they put in the IV. I can't say where they'll put the IV since it all depends on the surgeon and your vein. Sometimes you'll get it on the inside of your arm, but usually for this purpose they'll use the back of your hand.

As soon as they add the anesthetic to the IV, you'll go right out (they might ask you to count backwards from 100 etc.) and won't feel a thing. The next thing you know it, you'll wake up! It'll feel like not even...5 minutes even though its been less than an hour (depending on the patient). Depending on how deep the teeth are, it could take almost 2 hours if the surgeon needs it.

You'll have a few gauze in your mouth, but make sure to keep them there for an hour or so (the girls will fill you in). When you take them out, make sure there's no more bleeding. If there is, put in a fresh gauze.

The surgeon should basically tell you everything you need to do after that. Make sure to keep up with the salt water soln' ;) and also make sure you don't get too close to people because your breath is gonna SUCK :P

Don't eat anything sharp or small & solid (like rice) because it will get lost in your mouth and you don't have much tongue maneuvering LOL. and the LAST thing you want to do is get the areas infected by opening them up. There will be so much bacteria in your mouth you need to keep it clean.

And of course, you're gonna be very swollen for a while. Many will say you have a chipmunk face  but it will go down within a week or so depending on how well the operation went & how much damage is done to your gum tissue. If it gets infected, well you know the rest

Before you leave the office (or hospital depending on where you have it done) ask one of the girls for some extra sterile gauze. When she asks "why" just show her your mouth & she'll understand

Don't worry you'll be fine. Just make sure to tell the girls not to tell you when they put the IV in. When you lie down in the chair, if the girl is to your left (usually) that means you'll get the IV in your left arm. Just look to the right! If she's on your right (not very likely) then look to the left.

You're gonna feel when the IV goes in, but if you don't look you won't get sick :P Just remember these guys have been doing this for many years & seen basically every case over and over again. You will be fine just go in with a good attitude :)

good luck!

Oh, and you're gonna have to go back a while after to get the stiches removed. Don't worry it doesnt hurt at all; usually the stitches would have already fallen out. That process wont take more than ten minutes.

lol thanks for all the reasuring comments...i think... :P

yeah i already know the 411, but ive been doing some research...apparently, after IV you arent exactly asleep, you can still talk and respond to the doctor, people say its like getting drunk. The other part is that even after IV, you still need to get the local anesthesia (sp?) and stuff like that. Ive been pretty lucky will now to have never needed anytime of needle near my mouth. Eek!

Rx....

Do yourself a favor. Write a little mental note to "not speak when you wake up". Trust me, you can save yourself the potential embarrasement of saying stupid things, especially if the nurse is hot! I had all 4 of mine pulled 4 years ago. I woke up, the nurse asked me who the girl was in the lobby waiting for me "just a friend, way to ho-ish for my taste". I don't remember much, but I do remember complimenting the nurse on her "bodacious ta-ta's". She was not impressed. I also CLEARLY remember the head wrap they had on me. They wanted to walk me out the front door to the car, but I threw a fit "still in a daze" and said "I look like a freakin terrorist with this rag on my head, someone will shot me out there!" Loweandbehold, there was a middle-eastern family in the lobby....they were quite offended. They walked me out the back door instead. Woke up the next morning on the couch, blood on my shirt from drooling, and a note pinned to my sleeve "call the dentist and apologize". I later was reminded what happened.

Some surgeons don't have a license to put you totally out, but most of the good ones do & SHOULD.

Trust me, you want to make sure before going in, you've got a surgeon who has the license. You DO NOT want to be awake at ALL. You should be totally out. Call his office to ask if you'll be totally out during the operation. The girls in his office will be able to tell you.

They will inject novocaine into your gums (after you're out) so when you wake up you won't have much pain. When you first wake up, you won't feel much pain at all. Within an hour you will feel it! It will be HORRIBLE so make sure you get the prescription filled right away! The pills he gives you will be some type of anti-inflammatory to ease the pain caused by the damaged nerves. Make sure you keep it close ;)

im pretty sure hes licensed for all that. he's also an md, dds oral surgeon. Infact i read somewhere online that he is the only one in san francisco with a duel degree. its costing me just over 3 thousdand including the x-rays and consultation...so im sure he will be good...(ah the old if its expensive its better track of mind)

well guys its finally over! no more worrying about this day ever again...i do have to say when the IV gets in, you feel dizzy and then your just out of it. One bad thing is that i woke up in the middle and started having some sort of panic attack...i know that sounds overly dramatic but i was wheazing for air and choking on my own blood/saliva...but before i knew it i was passed out again...he must of upped the dosage of the IV. WOke up and everything was over. Now i have a numb bottom lip and after a nap just now, i dont even have swelling. just one word and describe what im feeling

BOOM SHAKALAKALAKA!!!!!! ^_^

You'll be feeling the pain tomorrow! LOL Don't worry, it'll come, and badly :whistles:

Just keep up with the meds & the salt water soln' to keep the infection down.

glad everything made out "ok" :P

Sometimes they can't judge the amt. of anesthetic to give you; apparently this time it was too little. It happens sometimes, not much you can do.
