  1. The dealer can do it from the c-best options. Sometime they do it for free.
  2. So turning the key in the lock will not activate the alarm,?
  3. lots of info on buying a 98 and its maintenance which is mainly bushings.
  4. Closed as this is an ongoing debate not engine specific as most Toyota's all use similar compression and timing . There is a huge debate in the general section , please feel free to add comments there as it is the same ideas over and over again. thanks
  5. I always run mine down to the bottom before filling up to remove any deposits and anything else to get burned or inserted into my fuel filter. I have not had any issues with my pumps. But i also don;t wait to stall from no gas all the time which will heat the pump up and shorten its life.
  6. I would look at the wiring for the taillights and make sure it is not activating the reverse lights with the parking/taillights on only then check with the headlights also on. If it is on even slightly as it will send a signal in reverse back to the tranny and make it act weird. Also check your alternator and battery plus the grounds for bad parts or grounds.
  7. the Camry ones do not have the same weight hood as the LS which is very heavy. I am not sure how long they will last for an LS.
  8. I am going to buy a new cam cover when i get my belt done to replace the old one. I intend on cutting a window on it and placing some plexi glass over it so i can view the belt all the time to monitor it for wear and not have to go blindly into changing it again. This way i will know for sure when it needs to be replaced and not have to guess by millage and know it actual wear.
  9. Normal time of year where most people have other thing to do with there time including myself who has not been on in over a week for the Christmas festivities and what not. Merry Christmas i am not politically correct nor am i catholic i just love this time of year.
  10. Flushing the tranny will not make the filter clean if it did it would make the particles start to float in the tranny all over again and defeat the purpose of the filter in the first place. The screen mesh only holds back large particles not small ones. Also the magnets do need cleaning to remove any metal it catches. I use high end synthetic oil for my engine but only Toyota tranny fluid as it is the best for it. Using good ol copper plugs work great i bought iridium's from NGK and found no difference luckily i bought them cheap other wise it would have been a waste of money.
  11. I love to see when members use the forums are the great resource they are. So much info can be had if the time is taken to find it. I commend you on your efforts to be an informed client and an owner of a mint RX. enjoy.
  12. I have 300 000 km on my 98 LS and it is in need for a belt. Before i drove to Florida a couple months ago i had a tech pull the cam cover to see what the belt looked like. It was ok with slight fibres showing. It can show fibers and run for 20 000k after. I have only that mine was done at 110 000k so i am due by far to most but i am not paranoid about as it will get done this month finally. It also depends on what rpms you are going at when the belt snaps to judge the amount of damage if you are over 3000rpms then it will be worse but i hardly get over 2000-2500rpm unless i have to be somewhere.
  13. inside or outside ? I use meguires NXT chrome/metal polish as it eats dirt and carbon.
  14. drop the tranny pan and clean the filter under the valve body before it gets beyond a plug and burns the rest of it. You need to flush the tranny again and add an external filter to the tranny return line form the rad.
  15. No key ios needed for the earlier cars as they do not have a transponder in the head. To tell if you need one for sure ,take your wallet key and insert it into the ignition. If it can start the car you do not have a transponder and it is not an issue for a remote starter.
  16. To get the wheels to seat and not leak it needs to have a wire brush or scraper to pull the chrome off around the bead seat. Once done it will not leak. Another option is to use green slime which is added to each tire and will hold the air perfectly.
  17. No one thinks a GS 300 or 400 would be a similar car for the 540 ? I love the E39 and the six is smooth but a nice 98-00 GS400 can be equal and it will be smooth just not a 6. The easiest way to get a similar car is to by a GS300 have about 4 grand in work to upgrade the engine and tranny to a supra 6 speed and a small turbo for ultimate reliability so for a good deal less than 20 000 you can have a daily driver with tons of power.
  18. high compression engines especially with variable timing NEED higher octane to survive and run right. One or 2 gas tanks will show no difference until it completely balances . I never use low grade gas and this debate is sooooooooooo old it has so many threads and each one gets closed as there is never anything added that is new news (EVER). Just lots of guessing and hear say of i think. Look in the general maintenance section for the octane thread.
  19. Definatly squares out the front end. Should be real easy to add a set in the front.
  20. Bad door pins that need lubing or trunk light. Lock the car and try jiggling the doors and trunk to set it off.
  21. OHHHH i think you are looking to have major issues from the byproduct of the diesel with you o2 and cats.
