  3. sk, lexusk8's ES was bought from a non-Lexus dealer, so no CPO warrnty and the mileage was up on the basic warranty. However, he did pick up a sweet ride. steviej
  4. you got me on this one too, sk. I thought the 92 only had 2 O2 sensors, too. I thought the post-cat sensor didn't appear until the 1994 model. hummph, learn something new every day. steviej
  5. dent doctors or paintless dent removal work great but it is dependent on the person doing it. I had a small dent from another car's door, removed while my car was at the shop for the damage from the drunk driver. You could even tell there was ever a ding there. Good luck with the new toy.   7. The fantasy filter that is in my air box kinda felt real, looked real......maybe it is not even there and my whole life is a fantasy. I guess, according to jragosta, my entire experience of 3 cars and 3 K&N filters and no problems is a fantasy. Driver, stop the automotive world, I'm done pretending and I want to get off!!!!!! No seriously, jragosta, I commend you on your scientific knowledge and PhD. I am of scientific training, too. I am also of the personalitly that likes to think for myself and experiment, that is the heart of science. OK, I may chance a sensor, I may not, I haven't yet. Just because someone doesn't follow your school of thought does not mean they are any less of a knowledgable person. Please DO NOT imply that! We have been down this discussion road before. My facts are my facts from my REAL life and from my REAL cars and my REAL wallet. 1. I have not dyno-ed my car so I don't know what HP increase there was (up to 4%) IF ANY. I doubt that there was any. I didn't buy the K&N for that. 2. I have never had to buy a replacement paper filter from any dealer or any autoparts store. Reason #1, small cost savings. 3. I did pick up a slight mpg increase with every car I have used a K&N. Reason #2, This resulted/results in a modest savings at the pump when viewed over years that the K&N was in use in each car. No fantasy there. The bottom lines is simple: -I will use what air filter I want to in my car. Your soapbox preaching won't change that. -You will use what air filter you want to in your car. My "fantasy thinking" won't change that. We are both intelligent and knowledgable people that are smart enough to undertake our own research and make our own decisions based on the facts that we have compiled. steviej

  9. I lectured in Costa Mesa in 1995, that was the last time there. I just remeber that I couldn't wear my contact lens outside. There was a high smog alert in effect. Before that, It was in the 80s and it was horrendous. I am glad to here things are improved. My cousin lives near the Hollywood sign on the hill and I want to go visit her. steviej
  10. First, jragosta, with your expert Chemistry and filter experience, given a brand new ES330 or any other luxury car. Do you think the filter will mess up the sensor(s) before or after the initial warranty runs out? The filter comes oiled from the factory so it won't need to be reoiled until after the warranty runs out (50,000 miles). So either way, if the sensor goes after 50,000 miles, the owner is paying for it. On the same note, is a Fram air filter or an STP filter an "authorized spare part". Funny how they don't list what is and what isn't an authorized spare part in the DIY maintenance items. In my 02 manual, the only item that is specifically stated is Toyota T-IV tranny fluid. Second, I have had one 02 sensor go. I doubt it was due to the K&N. I have heard that Lexus/Toyota has a very large batch of 02 sensors that were giving out prematurely. My point is that the K&N was in place and my service manager knew all about it. I have even placed the STOP sticker provided with the K&N on my air box. The sensor was replaced under warranty without a flinch, question or hesitiation from my dealer. They didn't even try to use the K&N as an excuse to not do the warranty replacement. Maybe just my dealer, who knows. I haven't had a problem in any car that I have put a K&N in, but that is just my experience. I trust that. Again, it all comes down to what each owner is comfortable with.   11. bdonk, take a trip to LA and find out for yourself. lots of smog. I saw alot of engine bays back in the 80s that were literally orange with soot and smog dirt. Lots and lots of cars and pollution and crap. California really tightned up on the biggest offender of air pollution.....cars. steviej
  12. monarch, you are correct on this. The US 02-03 ES is ULEV compliant. The US 04 is ULEV-II compliant. The Canadian version ES is not goverened under the US EPA guidelines. In discussions with Lexus (US) during their release of the TSB for the 02/03 customer transmission shift quality compliant, I asked why we couldn't just get the ECU being substituted in Canada? Their responce was that given the ECU in question and the electronic throttle/transmission, the engineers could not get the emissions within the ULEV acceptable limits. Keeping the ULEV compliance was more important than the satisfying the small number of owners that actually registered a complaint. The result was a poor TSB that only changed the shift points to remove the shutter or "gear hunting" at about 40 mph. It did nothing for the hestitation or lag. However, I was told that the Canadian ECU was available by special order at a small fee of $1750 USD, would not be covered under warranty and Lexus could not be held responsible for any failed emissions tests. The 04 was billed as having an improved 5 speed auto tranny. Supposedly that improvement was the programming from the 02/03 tranny TSB being factory installed. I beleive it is still the same physical tranny, but I am not 100% positive. steviej.
  13. should be. pull down the arm rest in the middle of the back seat. There should be a door exposed. Open it (may need the key). Now, try to put two pairs of skis through it and see. An alternative......Yakima racks are very good. I have one for my kayak that fits on my 02 ES (same set up for the 04).
  14. I have an 02 and I think I am one of the original complainers of the electronic throttle/transmission issue. I have learned how to accelerate the car very rapidly and not achieve the hesitation. I have to agree with the better part of the posts here. If I had to replace my 02 today, I would most certainely without a doubt go right to the 04 or 05 ES330. The LS is way too much money for me right now. The GS is a little too much money for me right now, and the IS is a little too small for me right now. steviej
  15. lexus-lover, its a decision you have to make. I have had a K&N since 15k miles. Have 43k now. Not once has any sign of a problem arisen. I will be cleaning the filter soon and reoiling it. I have done this before and will be sure not to overoil it. However, time will tell if the re-oiling will be a problem. But I can say that there has not been a problem in 28k miles. It is a decision that you and only you can make for your car. Monarch (saber) has cited a link to an ongoing thread on ClubLexus that discusses the reasons for some people removing the filter and only using stock filters. There are two sides presented (keep it or remove it) there too. -If you are looking for a hp increase...forget it. Won't happen with this filter. -If you are looking for a mpg increase....it is possible, several people have achieved this including myself. -If you are looking for a way to never buy a stock filter again.....you found it. Your car is an 04, are there any cautions or precautions from Lexus on the airbox or in the manual? My 02 did not have any. Things may have changed in 2 years. Check carefully as you do not want to do anything to void a warranty if a problem does occur. To answer you initial question.....no you do not have to disconnect the battery. The ECU will automatically adjust to the knew air flow rate accordingly. It may take a tank or two to see any improvement in gas mileage. steviej

  18. the orginal warranty should still be in effect. 4 years from original date if inception or 50,000 miles. I wasn't aware that CPO overides orginal. All lexus dealers are supposed to honor orginal and CPO warranties on any lexus. Their service centers are all linked by a computer network so you should be able to go anywhere and the service writer should be able to pull up the records on that particular car. You did the right thing by calling Lexus customer service, let them make the decision. If all else fails, make the trip back to the purchasing dealer and have them fix it all. They already said they would. Make a little vacation out of it. Talk to Lexus Customer service and see if they won't reimburse you for mileage or something to get the car there.....you never know until you ask. Mr. 90LS400Lexus: "First of all- at 29K miles, you should not be having any of these problems on this automobile." I agree with you 100%. The key word being should. But, you really don't know who had the car for the orginal 29K miles and how they treated it. Could have been a previous loaner, could have been a traveling sales rep that didn't give a crap cause it wasn't their car.

  22. if you do use alcohol based products to clean the leather, definately condition the leather afterwards. The alcohol will dry that area of the leather out. steviej
  23. 1. go to several high end car dealers and see for yourself. Look around the showroom for cars displaying stickers on the middle of the hood that say 3M. These cars have the invisible bras. My Lexus dealer always has at least 2 cars showing this feature. Honestly, you really don't notice them. I wish I had gotten one back when I got the car. 2. dude, get real on the rock chips. Just cause it is a Lexus or BMW or MB doesn't mean the physical trajectory of a pebble kicked up from the car in front of you is altered. Rocks are hard and chip paint on any car. It would be nice if cars came equiped with a StarTrek like shield option. 3. splashing on the fenders is totally normal. Again for Lexus as well as MB and so forth. That is why we have buckets and soap and sponges and better yet....detailers. 4. As for the acceleration.....you may find if you alter your driving habits the car performs better. Use the pedal to your advantage. 3/4 throttle will get you to the gear and speed you want quicker than stomping it to the floor. Work the tach and the pedal and you will get smooth downshifts with rapid acceleration. Mine is an 02 and that is when the electronic throttle started. Been driving it since 9/02 and it is a learning experience for the driver. Read the PINNED thread about the 02-03 tranny at the top of this forum. enjoy the beautiful new ride. steviej
  24. Are you sure it didn't say ALTEZZA? If it did, it is the international/japan badging for the IS300. Since Lexus isn't marketed in Japan, the IS300 is also the Toyota Altezza. steviej
  25. the warranty is 4 years from the first date of registration of the car. If it was registered before 6/23/2000, then your warranty is up. If it is not up, it should cover the brake sensor and repairing it, but it will not cover routine break service unless there is a TSB concerning the problem you are having. (I doubt that one). The 45k service is the same as the 15k service. you can expect $250-400 bill. All of this stuff can be done at home if you are mechaincally inclined. the metal sound, make sure it isn't a CV joint or a hub going bad. I wouldn't be surprised if Lexus stalled you until the warranty is out. That way you got to pay full price after the warranty. Document all the times you brought it in for this sound before you warranty is up. If it is a mechanical problem (not brakes) and you warranty is up, you can use this documentation to get them to cover it even when the car is not under warranty because the car was covered when you first reported the problem. steviej
