  2. Sounds like a dead battery to me--or excessive corrosion. get a cheap voltmeter and see if it has 12 volts; 14.2 when alt. kicks in.
  3. just a comment: use Gunk to clean an engine--not oven cleaner. Oven cleaner will corrode aluminum--read the label. Go to a spray wash--don't use a garden hose for this. Also, watch the alternator--best to cover it with a plastic bag.
  4. Yes, dynamic balancing on a machine. the machine will be set to the dynamic mode and will read out the wt required for each side of the wheel. Watch all this work---make sure the guy cleans where the weights are to go since they use foam tape that is on one side of the weight. The guy should be able to cut the wts in half if closer balancing is needed. Also see the numbers zero out, indicating a balance[on a subsquent spin]. Make sure the machine is fairly new--not 15 years old!!! I usually put a dab of Goop on the edge of each wt. when you have been thru this you don't want it to come off. Oh, make sure the guy takes off the old wts first. Good luck on this---it may not be the problem--but it was my experience. let us know if it solves it--don't know if I want to know if it doesn't!!! :D
  5. If you have chrome wheels you can have problems balancing the tires. I have them and had the tires balanced with 'hammered-on' weights; went just about 10 miles and heard banging coming from under the car. Long story short: the hammer-on weights will NOT stay on the wheels period !!!!!!!!!!!!! They sling off. Went to a wholesale tire equip. co. and bought a box of weights specifically[said on box] for a Lexus--cost me about $12. !!!! Went back to the balance place and had them use these weights-----same problem: would NOT stay on. Finally wised up and went to a place that used stick-on weights and did dynamic balancing. NO Problem since by using stick on's. Note that the 1st place would do stick-on balancing (if you furnished the wts.) but would only put them on one side of the wheel [ set for static !!]--static balancing is good for bicycles,etc--ha. Don't know if this is applicable--but it is true. Only use hammer-on wts if you have painted wheels--then you shouldn't use them since they will scar the wheels.
  6. Tips on what to use to find exhaust leaks: Buy a mechanics stethoscope and take the sound amplifier off and use that end of the hose for finding the sound[the ear pieces fit real good to eliminate extranous sound]. Get plastic hose[approx. 1/4" in dia] and a plastic tee; make your own sound stethoscope. Get a plastic hose and use only one ear to listen to the sound, but you should stop-up the other ear.
  7. You can find out where to get BG 44K at your zip code by going to this BG Prod. website: http://www.bgfindashop.com/ note: you can find out anything at Google [at least I do !!]. See it says "BG--find--a --shop" !!!!
  8. guess you know that the button has to be out not in.
  9. The '93 a/c filters are activated charcoal and the last time I checked at a dealer[long ago] they were $75. Instead of buying, I blew them out--but will want some soon------I said 'want' not 'need'----you really don't need to replace them---but you should want to---- Other cars don't even have filters-------the Lexus has filters that will STOP smoke particles !!!!!!!! Note that these are not just "pieces of paper"(at least the '93); and this stuff is expensive.
  10. Here is the thottle body cleaning site. http://www.lextreme.com/tb.htm
  11. last one: I forgot----also clean your throttle body---this will do 'wonders'. Check on Curt's description on this--not sure where it is.
  12. Use "BG 44K" before you take anywhere. go to Google and type this in to find out what it is---it is the best cleaner.
  13. TKS, Joe On the gloves: EVERYONE needs to get the 'latex' gloves[really not latex, but tough Nitrile or something]; you can get a box of 100 at autoparts etc stores. They are super for just about any dirty car work(also protects when you are using solvents)--the box will last for years. Now if I can just remember to use them !!!!!!!!
  14. Got my lower joints from Irontoad today---was really'scared' about the order[by cc] since there was no address or tele # on the website. Had no idea who irontoad was, are where there were; and if I didn't get the order, how could I tell my cc co. what happened(with only a web address). So............. Was happy to see when I received the order that it is a Lexus dealer in Pa. Maybe they are just not wanting to advertise(by listing their name) that they are 'lowballing' these factory parts. Tks for the write up; let you know if all goes well on this end. You didn't say if you 'didn't' hear or felt any difference !!!!!
  15. Rice--did you replace the EGR pipe yourself--was it a problem??
  16. maybe I am missing something. My '93 does not have TRAC and in snow or ice it just spins one wheel--like my old 635csi did. Certainly not good for the white stuff. Sounds like when I upgrade to a later model LS I should get TRAC--correct????
  17. Do youall really like to drive your LS's in snow and ice??? I would never do that [fender work too expensive]; plus they don't do good in all that stuff. If I lived in the North, I would buy a used Outback(ALL WHEEL DRIVE) for the snow and ice trips and leave the Lexus at home. Just my $0.02 !!!! :D
  18. Sorry--didn't read 1990LS400's first !!!!
  19. Billy-the earlier thread on this was Dec 6-Dec 11. Type 'hinge' in search !!! Not as good explaination as Denny's but may be helpful.
  20. Do NOT recommend building this from aluminum. You will be extremely close to "hot" connections; could short out and cause a fire. The stock aluminum one is not that close to the hot connections; really why it is not effective --- not big enough. Also a 'gallon round jug' will also you to curve the cover around the back upper edge so as to prevent any thing from entering--note you don't cover the whole back side. Just no reason to build from aluminum--much harder and dangerous. As I said--the brush block with the 2 brushes can be installed within 5 minutes--really, less time. The only other thing to do is to look at the brush contact surfaces on the rotor to see if they have worn down A LOT [if not a lot--don't worry about it]. If so, install a new rotor--$70. You can really put the brush holder in yourself--think 2 screws are all that hold it in.
  21. My last one is misleading---apply it [take off !] by a buffer--basically, you can't get rid of scratches etc by hand !!! but it is good, has jewelers rouge in it. it is creamy not gritty
  22. with that mileage you should use 20w50 Castrol also--certainly in Tx. $0.02
  23. Belated comment: For scratch and swirl removal: try 'Meguiar's Scratch X', hand applied. I have been very happy with this 'relatively new product'---and it smells good !! :D Basically removes ALL fine scratchs and swirl marks.
  24. Sorry--sent wrong URL [had both in my favorites]; the following stuff will work fine[you may need the 0.305 width in order to get the length]; backup on the URL and check all the products. BEATS $300. http://www.flexchrome.com/Products/extruded.htm HR015C CHROME 73.5 $14.00 Buy Chrome Now! HR048C CHROME 108.0 $18.00 Buy Chrome Now! EXTRUDED PRODUCTS All the moldings listed are manufactured to O.E. ISO-9001 specifications. The flexible extruded plastic moldings are attached using 3-M application specific attachment systems (adhesive backing; peel and stick). These are the same materials used to attach urethane bumper and body side moldings on modern cars and trucks. While this assures lifetime attachment to your project, they can be easily removed without paint damage by using a heat gun or hair dryer. The chrome moldings are chrome Mylar extruded with the flexible plastic and a clear UV resistant coating. There is also a semi-clear temporary plastic layer intended to protect the finish until it is installed. Do not confuse these moldings with cheap products available at your local auto parts store.
  25. Concur with all--code retrival would be best. Could be just sparkplug misfire. Don't know if your state?? has emission inspection; if you have a friend in this, an OBD1 readout will even tell you which spark plug has misfired or anything else. Also, throttle body cleaning was the BEST thing I have ever done to my car !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone should do it about once per year. Tks--Curt.
