  1. I have a Costco battery and I have had them before, never a problem. When I replaced the battery in my truck, I bought an Optima Redtop at Costco for $129.
  2. and welcome to LOC. This is the best car site on the Internet and we are glad to have you.
  3. ahhh, it can't hurt, it is cheap and it is good PM. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I hope it helps.
  4. There is no comparision. Having owned 2 and rented a couple I would never consider a Buick. Seems to me they are very popular with older people who drive slowly. I like to rip.
  5. Strange that my 99 Corolla has them but not a newer Lexus? Our 04 ES330 has them but not the 90 LS400. I usually drive with my headlights on all the time. After awhile it becomes a habit and you don't even think about it when starting out. I doubt I would ever go to the trouble or ecpense of adding them. Either way, welcome to LOC.
  6. Hey LS how are you doing? You get to a point with vehicles where you just have to decide if they are worth spending the money. Due to the economy, cars are pretty cheap right now which makes it even harder. I have my LS all to myself now since I bought my wife am ES330. I usually don't drive it much and it sits in the garage but I did take it to NY last weekend. Still rips.
  7. Your comment about your wife claiming the care was humerous. When I bought my 90 LS my wife immediately took it over. I bought her an 04 ES330 last year which she likes but she says she still likes the 90 LS better. Ia agree, far superior drive. I would also consider buying a Valentine 1 radar detector to go with the LS since they are pretty fast. Now the LS is mine.
  8. Having visited your area previously, I believe you are located in a rather damp climate. Damp climates can cause lubrications at hinge points to deteriorate. As a very cheap and easily completed maintenance procedure, I suggest you purchase a can of White Lithium Grease at an auto parts store. It comes in a spray can that has an extension tube to reach tight areas and costs around $4. Observe the hinge mechanism in motion and determine the contact pivot points, as this is where lubrication is applied. Work the tip of the extension tube into the pivot points and apply some of the lithium grease. I usually shake the can vigorously throughout the process, as the material seems to coagulate rapidly. Prepare by having an old towel around to catch the over spray. Might help, can’t hurt. I apply white lithium grease to my door hinges, and hood hinges regularly.
  9. Here is a real cheap way to check what could be the problem. Go out and start the car on a damp humd night. Open the hood and look for the fireworks. You may hear a ticking sound accompanied by sparks jumping off the wires. They carry high voltage which moisture even in a trace amount attaches to the dirt on the wires and votage is lost. To fix it on a temporary basis, spray some WD-40 over the plug wires and distributor area. Maybe, just maybe...
  10. I get 39mpg highway (6-8 Liters per 100km) and 21 (11 L per 100 km city). SK?? 39mpg Not in an LS400 My 1990 LS400 gets around 19mpg in city and on my trip last weekend I drove 391.1 miles on 16.848 USG = 23.21 mpg. 20 miles of that were in city, another 175 miles in 4 lane with lights, and the remainder was Interstate. Speed on Interstates was 75-90 for the most part. I use 93 octane, Mobil 1, K&N filters, BFG Traction TA/V tires 225/60VR-15 @ 34lbs. My 2004 ES330 gets around 23 mpg city and 29-31 Interstate. I imagine that if I was to drive the speed limit (which I won't) I could get 33 out of the ES and 27 out of the LS.
  11. That is your best bet. I still believe to this day that one of the best ways to know a car is to wash it before you buy it. Gives you a chance to examine every detail. I would call a Lexus dealer and ask if they will mail you a copy of the VIN service report. They might even be able to do it online since that is where it is stored anyway.
  12. Your car looks great. I have always used a wax called Collinite #845 Insulator Wax. I have never found any other wax that lasts bearly as long.
  13. If you are burning enough oil to see it in the mirror, your oil level would drop enough that you would notice it. Check all your fluids and see what is low. Oil burning is not good and usually indicates worn piston rings or if seen on harsh deceleration, bad valve seals. Thanks for turning off the caps, they are difficult to read and often ignored.
  14. Excellent advice on the brakes. Larger wheels and tires require significantly more stopping power and the 1990, 1991 brakes are marginal at best in their native state.
  15. I use Mobil 1 in all my vehicles. I also use K&N filters. I think the LS400 uses a K&N HP 1002 filter but it might be a 1003. In regards to the darkness of the oil, that is something I have never seen.
  16. Certain things seem to present the most problems. The power steering system should be carefully checked for leaks. The time and temp display often goes black. The struts and the upper control arms (wishbone) should be checked. Pay particular attention to the tires for signs of unusual wear and be sure to look at the rear ties as well as people often switch them when they begin to wear. Other than that, I would agree that getting the VIN service printout from a dealer is important. I would look on autotrader, com and craigslist.com to get an idea of what prices you should be looking at.
  17. Does anyone know for sure if it's 2 quarts on the 430? I'm really curious! Measure what you drain out, add the same amount and then check fluid level after driving awhile.
  18. My 1990 LS400 has just over 166,000 miles and sleeps inside. I bought my wife an 04 ES330 with only 23,000 miles. I completely detailed the car, put new Yokohama Avid V4s on, K&N air fliter and the usual stuff. After she has driven it for about 3 weeks she says she still likes the LS a lot better. I have to agree, this LS400 was built for the highway.
  19. I am pretty sure that if the gas cap isn't closed properly, the check engine light comes on. I have had it happen on several different vehicles. Seem to happen more often in New Jersey since they put the gas in there and half of them haven't a clue.
  20. Sounds like a nasty problem. Maybe the car isn't downshifting and is staying in 4th gear. I know when the wire broke in the trunk mine did the same thing and I had to downshift manually. When it happened, I knew what it was since the reverse light on the dash came on when I applied the brakes. Thanks to the people around here, I fixed it in no time. Did someone tell you the computer was bad?
  21. In Virginia you can tint any window completely dark except the windshiled, and front windows which are restrcited to 35%. Frankly I would never tint my windows since any tint is like asking to get pulled over as certainly guarentees you a ticket for something if you are stopped.
  22. I have 225/60R-15 94V BFG Traction T/A V tires on my 90. They are on the factory rims. I keep 33lbs in the tires cold. Lower inflations do somewhat seem to help the handling and ride but they wear out faster and return poorer fuel economy. On my ES330 I have Yokohama Avid V4's at 225/60R-16 94V. I keep 34lbs psi cold in them. The LS gets right around 25mpg and the ES gets 30mpg. This is driving on Interstates between 55 and 85.
  23. I guess I would first screw around with the brake pedal position indicator if you can find it. I know most cars use some type of a switch near the pedal. Maybe it is just hung up or slightly out of adjustment. With a little luck you might be able to get it off. I suppose if the master cylinder had an internal leak it might cause it. Wwat happens if you hold firm pressure on the brake pedal?
  24. Looks (probably looked at this point in Canada) great. How you must hate winter on your car.
  25. It would be intersting to hear how to remove the radio on a ES330. I need to add the wire to the antenna for my Sirius.
