  1. I have yet to meet a Lexus dealer that I felt was honest on service. I take mine to a Toyota dealer because they work is done correctly and the price is significantly less.
  2. I had a couple Buicks with 455cid's and that is one moving engine. Mine has a 250 with 3 on the tree. It mainly sits next to my truck in the garage, neither which get much use. Okay so you checked the wires. The way the wires are tucked into the trunk hinge they are forced to bend repeatedly a certain way. When I first looked I didn't see the broken wire either because the insulation was not broken. If your wire isn't broken as you claim, you might find where the other end goes. I lived in Syracuse for many years and after 5 years in salt, a car is all done. Roll down here to southeastern Virginia and pick one up. I see 90-94 for 3500-6000 around here.

  4. the bulb out indicator comes on even if one of the brake lights is out. Interesting that the light should illuminate when the key is in the start position.
  5. I had a fuel line freeze up on my van while I was in college. Frozen solid and nothing I poured in in carb, tank whatever in the 5 degree air did a thing. Me and some of the boys towed it down to the tractor lab overnight and in the morning, it fired right up.

  8. The light should come on when you crank since that it how you determine that the bulb is functioning. As long as it goes off, everything is fine.
  9. I knind of know what you mean on this one. My 1990 probably has the original radiator hose but when I look at it (and I mean under as well) it still looks really good. I had the Toyota dealer check and they said they were fine as well. I guess that the "if it ain't broke, I ain't fixin' it" method falls into play here. Pretty sweet car to commute in isn't it.
  10. still closer than any speedometer. My Garmin register x7.8mph max on my last trip and I call that to the 1/10th of a mph.
  11. Also depends a lot on what kind of gasoline you use. Say what you want but using top tier fuels makes a big difference in the long run. Cheap gasolines save you money now and cost you later. Pamper that baby.
  12. I guess the only way to check CEL issues without wasting a lot of time is to hook it up and find the codes. Somewhere along the way you probably disturbed a sensor, or you have a case of coincidence. My vote goes to the first but.....
  13. whoa. not sure what all the pictures were but the solution is simple. There is a wire broken in your trunk. I've fixed mine twice and can tell you that it is a pretty simple and very inexpensive fix. This is a very common problem on early LS models. send me a email or message and I'll see if I can dig up some pictures.
  14. So which part is wrong? The "E" or the "400" lol. my guess is the "E." As far as the starting issue goes, these LS 400's need a lot of juice to start. To jump them you need to wait 10 minutes after connecting the cables. Ask the attendants at the Newark Airport. Check the battary cafeful, very important.
  15. I'd snap that LS up, and drive rigthj back to Utah and not worry one bit. Unless someone has really hammered the car hard, these belts last about forever. Lexus probably posts the lifespan at half.
  16. Mine is dead on. I have 225/60/VR15 tires insead of factory 215/65/15. I didn't have a GPS when I had the original size tires on so I could only guess on that.
  17. I also bought a set of Firestone Winterforce snow tires for my wife's ES330 (225/60-TR-16). Got them mounted on sweet alloys, balanced, and delivered for about $750. Driving in snow without snowtires is just asking for trouble. Yeah, $750 might seem like a lot but what is your collision deductable? mine is $1000. I really like the Winterforce and you should easily get 3-4 seasons on them. Blizzaks handle better but wear out after one good season. tirerack.com is the place to go read all the reviews.
  18. Many bad things happen when a fuel tank is allowed to get low on a frquent basis. Not only does condensation occur as described above, but you must also remember that your fuel pump is located inside the tank. There is no cooling device for the fuel pump, the cooling is provided by the gasoline. Running a car out of gas even once can easily compromise your fuel pump. If I'm on the Interstate I'll run it down to 1/4 or so but at home, it stays filled, especially in the winter. Your problem? with 10% alcohol in fuels, water isn't as much an issue as it was before gasahol. I would probably start by checking the gas tank vent as it sounds like you are drawing a vacuum in the tank. Try taking off the gas cap for a minute when it starts doing that and see if it changes everything. Don't drive with it off of course.
  19. When I bought my car 7 or 8 years ago, I had it checked at Lexus. At that time they told me my upper control arms were "weak." I said uh huh and worried about it for awhile. I still have the originals in and haven't changed a thing and I have to tell you, the car drives great, handles great, has no clunks or vibrations, stays smooth right up to a buck, and the tires don't wear. I have had plenty of cars and you know when a ball joint is failing, because you notice several of those things. I'm leaving them in until I can see a reason to change them. No way would I pay that much for OEM. I don't understand why Lexus feels they have to rip off their customers. If I owned a Lexus dealership, I would have a couple sessions a month when owners could bring their cars over and chat with the technicians about them. Pretty idiotic huh?
  20. Years ago, I replaced the strut rods on my car because the car was pulling to the right. I never had any vibration through. My car did develop a vibration which I could feel in the steering wheel but only between 75-85mph. When I replaced the tires with BFG Traction TA/V's, the vibration disappeared. The car is like glass right up to speeds I won't discuss.
  21. Lexus and Toyota factory brake pads are available from irontoad.com. For my 1990 LS, they cost $50. I have bought several things from these guys and they are fast and honest. Want to find a crook? you only need to look to your local Lexus dealer. When I had a rear caliper hang, I solicitied a quote as was told "at least $700" by the dealership. The guy said this with a straight face and wasn't even holding a gun. I bought the caliper at Bap-Geon for $90 and put it on in a half hour.
  22. Yes, 17mm is the correct size to remove the calipers. Please, please, use only a 6 point socket. To break the bolts loose, slip a piece of pipe over the handle of you ratchet or breaker bar. They are easy to remove after that. As far a brake pads go, I would suggest to use Lexus replacement pads as they don't dust much and work great. Installing aftermarket pads can cause dust and other issues. You can buy NEW factory Lexus pads from irontoad.com for $50. Expect to pay over twice that at your local dealership.
  23. I use only Premium, top-tier fuels. Saving 5 or 10 cents a gallon means nothing to me. If I'd wanted a car that burned regular, I would have bought one.
  24. Fuel economy milage depends on many factors but probably none as much as your individual driving habits. I love my V-8 Lexus and I figure that if I have a V-8, I'm gonna use it. In city driving I usually average right around 17-18mpg. On Interstates I can easily pull 25mpg. I could probably milk 30mpg out of it if I made an honest effort, but I don't. My foot tends to press down a little harder than many as I like to drive fast in this car so 25 is great for me.
