  1. the problem on the rx300's tranny's was that friction in a part of the rx300 was heating the transmission fluid causing it to burn. on the 2004-2005 highlander this was fixed. The 2001-2003 highlander yes will have the same problem as on the rx. This is why i suggested the 2004-2005 model...lol...
  2. deffinetly do not get the 1999 or the 2000 rx300. Too many problems with the transmission etc. By 2001 some of the minor squeeks etc were fixed but the transmission was still a problem. Only the 2 wheel drive model wont have this problem, but still dont get an rx300. I would also suggest the toyota highlander which is the equivilant of the rx300. The 2004 or 2005 wont have the transmission problem. good luck
  3. turns out that since i got my rx300 in '03, i've always had my fog lamps on! I didn't even know it until the other day when i looked wondering if i even had fog lamps.. My old explorer had a light that went on on the center console (a stupid place for it but watever) when they were on. on the rx300 they put the switch for them on the directional/all the other 50 switches "bar" on the left of the steering wheel. who would have known they were on without an idiot light...errrrr
  4. when looking for a new car i would suggest finding one that is not a new model. When a new model is first produced, there are bound to be problems. For example in '99 lexus made their first car-based suv, the rx300. Later it was found that it had major transmission and overheating problems. In 2004 they finally stopped making this problemed rx300. They came out with the rx330, with a 3.3 liter engine. And even still it has transmission problems, but not caused be the same reason as the rx300. Hopefuly it will be fixed before the 3rd generation of rx's. In 1993 lexus produced the first gs300. This was the first generation of the gs series with the same 3 liter engine first produced in the 1992 es300's. In the years of 1993-1997 the gs300 was not changed in any major ways. A few here and there but no major problems, all fixed. In 1998 lexus produced the second generation of the gs series. A WHOLE NEW body style, but still the 3 liter engine. In 1999 lexus produced a 3rd generation gs; the gs400. This had a larger 4.0 liter engine, but still the same body style as the 1998. The gs300 (3 liter engine) was still being produced since 1993! In 2000 no major changes were made. All small problems were fixed. Still the gs300 and gs400 models. In 2001 another gs model was produced; the gs430. This had an even larger 4.3 liter engine! The gs400 was not being produced any longer though. I guess lexus thought it had enough choices for the gs... Now there was a gs300 and the gs430. In the years of 2001- 2005 NO changes were made to the gs300 or gs430. The point of this is this: The gs300 3.0 liter engine was first made in 1993, and any possible improvements/imperfections have already been made and fixed. There are ABSOLUTELY NO POSSIBLE bugs in the gs300 model. (1993-2005) 12 years.. The gs430 4.3 liter engine has only been made since 2001, so 4 years. Not all the bugs have been fixed yet, therefore more problems are likely to occur in the new gs430. another modle you might be interested in is the es330. The only drawback is that this 3.3 liter engine is the same as the rx330 first made in 2004; PROBLEMS WAITINBG TO HAPPEN... Also there is the Ls430. This is the 3rd-ish generation of the LS series. 1990-2000 the LS400 was made with a 4 liter engine. All problems/defects were fixed. In 2001 the LS430 was made with the same 4.3 liter engine as the gs430. But like i said it has only been in service for 4 years so it's probably not your best bet. It is a wonderful modle though. but as it is, lexus models are the nicest of all in my opinion. They all end up getting passengers where they want to go and are very reliable. Any model will work, but may have minor defects dependindg on the length of time it has been made for so problems can be fixed. If you are interested in learning more about all the different lexus models, go to lexus.com there is a LOT of info about model changes throught the years etc. hope it helps
  5. the gs430 is a really good choice. It is very reliable and has been known to have little problems. If you can afford the price, like the looks of it, i would highly recommend getting one. The gs430 has a powerful 4.3 liter v8, and its gas mileage is good for the size. There is also the gs300, which has a 3.0 liter v6. Less power but saves on gas mileage. The gs430 has more interior luxury features like wood and leather steering wheel which i find nicer then the others. But it all depends on what you prefer..
  6. hi, i was wondering if there is suppose to be an idiot/pilot light in the gauge clusters of the rx300's when the fog lamps are turned on. thanks
  7. yes the highlander is the equivilant to the rx300. The 2004-2005 highlander has a defferent v6 engine then the rx300's though.. The 1999-2003 rx300 and 2001-2003 highlander shared a 3.0 liter v6 four cam. In 2004-05 lexus made the rx330, with a new 3.3 liter v6 engine, so the 2004-05 highlander's have that engine as well. I have an rx300 and rx330 and cant really tell the difference in engines. Probably because the rx330's are larger and heavier needing a larger engine. I would imagine that the larger 3.3 engine in the highlander would improve performance, therefore that would be my pick. And yes deffinetly get the two wheel drive rather than the AWD or 4wd because toyota/lexus STILL CAN"T fix the transmission problems which i have experienced, and believe me it's not fun... If you are looking for a lot of power, i would not suggest the 4 cylinder. I test drove a camry with the 4, and the 6 had MUCH more power and the engine sounded much less stressed with the 6. But if you are more interested in saving gas mileage, go with the four cylinder. Keep in mind that in the spring toyota will release a 2005 hybrid highlander. This would save you a few mpg and wouldn't loose much power. The price might be higher but it wil be worth it seeing the increase in gas prices. Although with any new model there are bound to be a few minor (hopefully) defects, but go with what you think will help you in the future. hope this helps
  8. what i meant was that the needles "burned" out aka did not work and that it WAS unrepairable as you said. The REASON this happened was; lexus did not know that this was going to happen because it was the first generation in the making of them. But after they found out they were burning they fixed it for the later "generations" aka they didn't use led's anymore they went to cold cathodes which would last as long as the car would.
  9. deffinetly wait a few years before getting the new hybrid rx. even the 04 rx330's have transmission and other problems occuring and its engine is the same as ones in the past. imagine a new hybrid one..same bad transmission as the rx's and now a new engine thats been around for..what, the first year in a lexus! the only way anyone could think it mght be good is becuase toyota's used this in the prius before. But this same hybrid engine in an suv? mistakes waiting to happen. also, the gas mileage isnt all that it seems to be. in the end it would be better to just get a normal rx330.
  10. and after you find all of the screws hiding on the top, if it still doesnt easiely come off, pull! There is also a clip that holds it clolser to the car
  11. i think but am not totally sure that there are indicator clips on the front break pads. If you think you need new breaks, replace them. better safe than sorry, it can't hurt you, only make you feel safer
  12. you can also choose for a variety of colors as well from that website. They have blue, white, orange, yellow, red, and also green. hope this helps..
  13. depending on which model and year your car is, i know a well known company that can sell you new needles. They are very pricey, but they work. you can get them from www.lextech.org you can get the set (speedo, odo, fuel and temp needles) for around $99.00. It seems expensive but it's worth it when you get them. These will work fine, but as the stock needles burned out, these will as well in the future. The whole idea of having LED needles was a mistake by lexus's part and unfornunately because of Lexus optitron technology, the needles need to be lit seperately to be seen unlike other car dash's where the needles are lit by backlight, not requiring LED's in the needle itself.
  14. yeah if you take the cluster out the bulb can be replaced from the back. It unscrews, and any auto store will have a replacement for about a dollar..
  15. i got a pair of 8500k 55watt xenon's on ebay for like $20. i know the real ones are 'round 500ish but these are just as good in my opinion. not AS bright but the right color and illuminate the road very well. I put my stock HID/xenon rx300 next to my camry with the ones on ebay. Couldn't notice the difference
  16. in some states i know a new law was passed; if you have a car wothout the auto-leveling headlamp system, xenon's can not be put in. without the auto-leveling feature, when there is weight in the back seat, the car drops in the back causing the front to lean upwards, shining the light directly into oncoming traffic. The auto-leveling feature "automatically" levels the headlight parallel to the ground preventing this.
  17. if it's still under warranty, tell your dealer to "get it fixed" and if they dont keep bothering them until they do
  18. ..the LED's used in the old sc and es needles had a very short life (as seen) because they were the early generation led's. The cathode tubes used in the needles in the later years lasted much longer, therefore that;s what i would suggest.
  19. ford explorer's have better tranny's than the rx300
  20. if there isn't anything wrong with the rx300's transmissions, why do they break at such low mileage? changing the fluid at every 10-30k miles is rediculous.
  21. unless you're going anywhere you aren't fimiliar with, do not get the nav.. with the nav the center console is more complicated than it already is finding all the buttons and everything else. Keep it simple.
  22. just rip out the bulbs! if you have the HID xenon package you wont need to use the DRL's as high beams at night, so if you're so anxious to get rid of the DRL's takem out....just flip the hood nd pull them out..nd if u cant reach them cut the wires. just make sure they arent on while doing this you don't want to get shocked.
  23. i just had my 03 Rx300 serviced @ the dealer and had a front wheel allignment/balancing etc done. when i picked it up at the dealer everythig was fine. I drove it off the lot without a problem. As i was driving on the highway i noticed that the steering wheel started twisting to the left; it wasn't straight when i was going straight. The wood piece on the top was almost on the side and it felt as if the wheel was going to twist off. when i turned the wheel to the right the whole car turned to the right as it usually would proportionally, and when i straightened out again the wheel was totally upside down. When i turned again the wheel straightened out normally. As i continued to drive along this didn't happen again so i didn't think it was an emergency to stop. Days had passed and the problem went away. ....does anyone know what happened? thanks
  24. do you mean the lights on the sides of the bumpers? id=f so, just take out the fog lights and reach behind...the bulbs twist right out. At least they can on the newer gs430's..same body
  25. start by using premium fuel it always helps. There really isn't anything else you can do, because of the engine and horsepwoer it comes with. If there is a problem with the acceleration (unnatural for the rx330), get it fixed, but if you want more acceleration and it's not enough for you, well your stuck. My Rx has excellent acceleration and humms perfectly.
