About To Buy- Advice Please!

My wife is getting ready to buy the '05 RX330, AWD with the Premium Package. I am not a fan of AWD systems and know little about them- (I am a Jeep guy who likes solid axles, lockers, and true selectable transfer cases.) Has this transmission nightmare been worked out? We can only get the AWD here in the midwest. If the general concensus is to change the trans fluid every 15k I am going to try to derail my wife from this buy- kinda seems ridiculous, much like having to go to the dealer for software updates so the vehicle shifts right. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Take my word for it, as a Jeep guy you'll be miserable with the RX transmission. I'm a Jeep guy too and both my wife and I despise the transmission in her RX. It's been by far the most problematic vehicle we've ever owned.

why dont you jsut test drive it? i have no problems on my AWD except for the minor hesitation from time to time. you'll get used to it. plus, other things in the car make up for it.

I did test drive it - last night. I felt the lag and asked the sales person about it- before I had ever looked for info on it - who replied it had a "smart transmission" that would learn my driving habits- then she went into how cute my 2 year old son was and how the airbags would keep him safe- she knew nothing about cars- like sitting next to a talking brochure. I am now learning about the brake booster issue. Not sure which direction to go-

Do yourself a favor, my wife drove three loaner RX330 vehicles while her RX300 was getting its 2nd and 3rd trashmission ( oh sorry) She hated the shifting in the RX330 and found the hesistation very alarming in heavy traffic. Visability was poor in the rear the rest of the vehicle was ok. You would be much happier in a Toyota 4runner with a lot more reliablity as well as something that would perform as well as your jeep or better. That my 2 cents worth.

visbility is poor, i wont lie to you, but i have the backup camera which is a lot of help. the visibility is just like the rx300 tho. also, i dont think everyone is talking about the same thing in hesitation. My definition of it is when u first accelerate and theres just this 1 second moment where the car lags and then tries to make up for the loss of time so it jolts forward a little. also, it does learn your driving habits so during the break in period, drive like a grandma. that is if you get it.

That hesitation is the fly by wire computer control on the transmission. The learning mode is an example to cover up for the poor performance of the transmission and quite frankly, it probably will not improve after you supposedly teach it to shift. What happened to the smooth shift of the old trannys?

TSB's are not across the board for every unit monarch. The recalls I agree with, but not all 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD's suffer all of these 'maladies'.

Thank you for the reply to the question nobody asked-

I can see the transmission hesitation being a learning curve and getting used to it- but the info on the trans just failing is what concerns me- Thank you for all the replies and insight- I have the feeling I am going to be the owner of this vehicle wheather I like it or not- her heart is set on it, I hope I am not posting about trans probs or the brake booster here in a few months, but I will continue to post any feedback / experiences we have with it- Thanks again-

If you want anything close to the Jeep's 4X4 performance here's the way to do it.

Have a mechanic remove the center differential and PTO (Power Take Off). Remove the center differential spider gear that drives the front halfshafts and weld the spider gear that drives the rear in place. Now purchase the RX300's viscous clutch and extension shaft and install those in the PTO.

Now you will have a RWD vehicle that will "adjust", couple the front drive in via the viscous clutch with rear wheel slip or spin.

Now add 1.5" wheel spacers all around so you can use snowchains safely, on the rear first and then added to the front when and if needed. Always carry two sets of snowchains during the winter months, just as I always did with my Jeeps going back to 87 and now do with my 2001 AWD RX300.

You can combat the hesitation problem by changing your driving style to one of a bit more aggressive nature. Always accelerate "briskly" up to the speed limit and then relax the gas pedal pressure.

When I drive my six speed manual I often go from 1st to 2nd and then skip 3rd and into 4th. Then oftentimes directly to 6th.

That's because I can see the roadhead, know the speed limit, and am aware that I do not need the use of some of the intermediate gear ratios.

The Toyota/Lexus engine/transaxle ECU is simply trying to replicate the actions you would take. The problem is that it doesn't have your advantage of eyesight.

So it, the ECU, must rely strickly on the "feel" of the gas pedal as you use it, it "learns" when to upshift, even skipping gears at times.

So, accelerate "briskly", and only relax the gas pedal pressure once you have reached the road speed limit.

If you are hesitent on the gas pedal the ECU, as I do, will often go from 3rd directly to 5th. Now when you wish to downshift, with non-aggressive depression of the gas pedal it will begin a downshift, but only to fourth. If about this time you realize that you need a bit more ZIP and depress the gas pedal further then the shift to 4th is already "qued" and your "new" downshift into 3rd (or maybe even 2nd) will be delayed until the previously qued shift has completed.

The anticipary gear shifting, skipping, increases the vehicle's gas mileage and lowers emissions quite significantly therefore Toyota will not be coming up with a fix anytime soon, at least not without a beaucratic sign-off by the EPA and CARB.

A fix has been in the works since 2003 and the Toyota engineers are not dumb, if a fix were possible it would already be available.

Oh, one more thing...

In the wintertime the RX330's climate control will automatically switch to footwell mode, to heating from cooling (dash outlets) as the OAT declines to freezing. That's just about the same time the A/C compressor is disabled and now the previously condensed moisture on the evaporator vanes will be released to quickly coat a COLD interior windshield surface.

Don't get under "that" power curve, move the system out of cooling mode, heat the interior surface of the windshield slightly, anytime the OAT is below ~45F.

I think i can speak for most people when i say that you are buying a great car. I dont think ive read anything about "transmission problems" on the rx330, just on the old models. but hey, what do u expect if you have an older car. things are bound to happen. but why am i even mentioning those problems since ur buying an rx330.

The RX330 is a very nice car ... if not for the transmission hesitation (which may be alleviated with the new TSB applied ... I'll know soon) I wouldn't have much of a beef about this car at all. That being said it is a definite concern and annoyance at times. More annoying than dangerous I'd say.

My list of Pros and Cons after putting 15,000 miles on the car:

Positives:

Exterior Looks - really like the more aggressive exterior

Roominess - rear seat especially is a nice bonus; very comfortable

Reliability - quality of materials and durability a plus

Holds Value - great re-sale

Love my chrome rims on the black exterior

LOTS of other minor things

Negatives (will be more specific and seem like more, but isn't):

-- A slight bit more room in the cargo area would be appreciated, but not at cost of size (so it's fine).

-- Base stereo just OK

-- Lack of satellite radio (soon to be alleviated in '06 it sounds like)

-- Tranny hesitation - so very annoying more than anything

-- armrests seem a little weak

-- rear visibility to the rear corners - not a huge deal though

-- tires seem to wear quickly

-- paint seems to chip easily (I'd recommend the clear bra if this would REALLY bother you)

-- HIDs need to be tilted up a little to prevent cut off on road view

-- Wish the cruise light only came on when engaged rather than being on when the system is turned on.

-- Kind of tough to stop the windows when in the auto up/down mode.

Some of these are really picky and minor, but I'm trying to be comprehensive. Overall I'm pretty darn pleased with the car and the dealership experience can't be beat. Without the tranny hesitation I wouldn't even question my choice to buy an RX330.

I dont know how the hesitation could be categorized as dangerous, lol. its just a little lag no biggy. second thing, the headlights can be adjusted to make it higher. they are also auto levelers. just open the hood and i believe theres some sort of thing u can turn with a screw driver. just read the manual.

The RX330 compared to other cars on the road is what you really need to think about. Every car is going to have at least a few negatives, you have to accept that...

The sometimes jolty transmission is the only thing on the 330 that's sometimes annoying. You will find that sometimes you don't feel it, and other times it's EXTREMELY annoying. It's just the way the 330's are built.

The rx330 is a great car. Mine hasn't had ONE single problem yet.
