larryb
Rgenender Writes:"2002 SC430. Have less than 14K miles on it and have had it in for all service intervals. In the last 4K miles, or so, the inner treads on both rear tires have become bald, while the rest of each tire has progressively more tread as you go from inner tread to outer tread. The outer tread appears to have very little wear. After about 5K miles, a man pulled up to me at a light and said that my rear wheels looked like they were bowing out on the bottom. I keep the tires at between 37 and 38 psi. I know that the rear suspension has negative camber, but could it be so bad as to produce this kind of wear? Lexus dealer says that they have seen this before, but want to track it in future. Could their alignment machine be miscalibrated? They say impossible." option00002
1995 SC 400 (black/black gut) Purchased @ 109k now have 113k for $5,400 wholesale 3rd owner (CARFAX = 1st owner repo'd at 60k :whistles: ) Has honeycome BBS style 16'' rims with Supra Offset in rear...changes the whole stance of the car Completely stock less painted pin stripes and even has stock Mobile Phone w/ antenna Adjusted Silverstars so I have high-beam bulbs in both low and high slots....a must do Repainted gray painted area on driver/passenger door adjacent to window due to chips It is interesting as I purchased this car for my father who always loved them. Due to a divorce I absorbed it as an asset largely to help with a few things. I never thought I could like an import but I love this car. The one mod. I am near certain to do will be installing an aggressive torque converter. I am told this will drastically solve the female demographic 0-30 time making it responsive like a Vette. Problems I have encountered what appears to be normal problems: PS pump leak....toasted alternator....replace...may need a rack as well....will know within days Headlights clouded...in 1 hr I wet sanded and buffed to near new condition RR taillight had moisture in it...bought replacement on Ebay for $120 shipped Timing belt replacement in the next two weeks..tentioners, water pump, plugs/wires etc. ($$$) Sunroof had considerable wind noise... oiled and improved Passenger seat jammed...pivots - this is a !Removed!, still have not fixed and expect it to cost $300 + Passenger door lock actuator issues... on the to-do list Replaced Antenna Mast (easy) Rotors and Pads all around ... Korean rotors (inexpensive) w/ composite pads (expensive)...works great Dash needs two backlight bulbs...no biggy CD changer naturally broken, replaced with second hand that was broken too(returned)...use an IPOD I intend to keep this vehicle for some time. rayme
Hey all, This is my first Lexus and actually, the first non american car I've owned. I got my 93 SC400 back in August '06 from a family friend. Couldn't say no when I found out the car had 68,000 miles on it and the asking price was $4,000. It's definitely the nicest car I've ever had and it took me a while to get used to how quick it can scoot. Had inspection and tune up / alignment done at Hoy Fox Lexus in El Paso, TX by owner (two days before I bought it). In late August I had the car shipped from my parents house in Texas to my home in Boston and all was well till I took it on the first big road trip. Driving on the freeway at about 65mph I noticed the car was really wiggly. So much in fact that I really had to fight the wheel just to stay in my lane. Then noticed that it only happened when we were on old roads with deep ruts in them. This problem has tapered off since then and, while I don't think it fixed itself, driving those same roads has suddenly gotten much smoother. Would love to know if anyone has an idea of what this can be. Other problems I have: Condensation in the headlights temp LCD blacks out in cold weather factory CD player had a short in it, kept draining the car battery. (Disconnected it and listen to my ipod instead) Spedometer needle light flickers or goes dim on occasion Trunk never stays open Key batteries are dead The driver's side door is a mess: mirror switch doesn't work power seat memory doesn't work left speakers are out and the one that really kills me - driver's side window regulator broke. (how the heck can you be proud of your car when you have to open the door to pay a toll?) So, these problems are all on the to do list with the window being #1. Don't have the tools or know-how to fix any of these myself so it looks like I'll be making a few trips to Lexus of Watertown in MA. Really not looking forward to paying for any of it though. Either way, I really love this car.
daimyosoarer
1992 SC400 MODS: voltage regulator, stainless steel brake lines, ebc brake pads, 97 sc rims i've owned her for about 10 months now, only problems was my power steering pump went bad and leaked on the alternator. Had to replace them both. did the work myself though. :) the switches for memory seat thing dont work, (no biggie I want some cool racing seats eventually) my suspension needs some TLC. so I got some Daizen bushings and will put them in when I have time and money for some Tein coilovers, and a proper place to do it. other than that shes gotten me back between Miami and Gainesville several times (740 miles round trip) w/out a hitch. 112,000 miles on her. bought for 8,000 with 79,000 thousand miles on it. gategem
Hello everybody. I just purchased a 1992, SANDSTONE BEIGE, SC400. The owner ripped me off and it turns out he is in trouble with the law (but that’s another story). I purchased the car for $4200 and did a CARFAX which was good. The car has a lot of miles on it (220,000) but the engine and tranny are rebuilt and are in good condition. Everything works on the car and the interior and exterior are in great shape. I’ve had the following problems which the seller repaired: 1. Leaking radiator (was replaced) 2. Bad Water pump (both water pump and timing belt were replaced). I now have a problem that is driving me crazy. The Mass Airflow Sensor died and the car is running very lean. I found one at a junk yard but it did not work and them I purchased one from directautoparts.com and that one is also dead. Does anybody know where I can get a Mass Airflow Sensor for the car without going to the dealer who wants over $1000 for the part? I live on Long Island (Ronkonkoma, New York). SuperCoupe3
I have a 95 SC300 (3weeks old) with 129K on it. I got it for 6500 and I am very pleased with the car B) . Everything is stock and i like the feel so far. The color is gold. Its got an aftermarket Sony sound system that sounds great and it is pretty good looking. My only concerns are that the suspension might have to be replaced :cries: . It hits the bumps very hard and recently started making a squeaky noise everytime it has to run over smthing as small as a pebble :( . The interior is in good shape as nothing is cracked or chipped though the e-brake boot might need replacement. Will post pics soon.
wpk813
List your model, year , # of owners , price when bought and from where lenght of ownership and attributed problems and repair costs. Also mention where you had it fixed ( lexus, independent, midas or diy). When it was done. Any mods done to the car and its costs. If desired your age and insurance you pay. If you have any picutes in the gallery put links in the post so we can have an idea about the car. Please only post once and if you have a question either pm the member or make a new thread . This will keep the page from being filled with excess. I have a 1996 sc400 which I bought in MN from a reseller(Illinois title). the car had the sound equipment stolen (only unplugged NOT cut or ripped out) and the climate controller was also stolen. I had a local body shop restore the car to working condition and a local car stero shop replace the car sound system (NOT LEXUS stuff - way too much bucks) ( a pioneer head for $2500 - no way) for that $2500 i got eclipse tuner + 6 CD changer and speakers all around. still works good but install job is poor at best. Got the car for 15K in about 2000. There were a few other things that had to be done some other LEXIS modules that had to be installed ( I forgot which ones) - the theft system is still messed up to this day several wires cut below dash. Getting a spare key was a gas i had to send Lexus the only key I had from the local Lexus dealership's service department and wait. finally got another key plus the key code (very important). For the most part the car has required only normal maintenance (oil, battery, etc.) the windsheild washer bottle leaks -its way too difficult to get out so I'm leaving it for now. recently the LOCK module in the passenger side door stopped working - got it fixed at local Lexus dealership (atlantic city) I'm NOT impressed with them even though they give U a loaner. They told me that they never change fuel filters (drivers side rail) i think i know why. Mine is really Bad when i had the filter changed the last time at a local repair shop in NV. It took 2 guys to loosen the thing up. I may end up changing fuel lines to the tank and/or motor in the furture. at 153K i thinking a major tuneup is needed????? the car runs quite well but has a problem when out in the rain (must be HEAVY RAIN) it will bnot start. I'm also thinking shocks and/or springs may be needed???? but I'm NOT sure. ANY IDEAs????? I plan ( I say plan) to get in excess of 300K from this vehicle maybe shoot for 500K. what do YA think? Thanks, wpk813
hswain333
1992 sc400 2nd owner of car bought form original owner Paid 1500.00 for it.Needed a alt. and a idler pulley to drive.1.5 weeks later timing belt goes on I-10 coming out of phoenix in rush hour.Thank god for the 1st gen. non interference mtr. ;) Bought here in phx from a friend who has a new M5 it sat in his garage for 2.5 years.Entire two years went by with no start.Car is in great shape did the water pump and cam seals also had to change right bank dist. rotor when the T-belt broke must of swung around and broke it.Drove for under a week and all of the sudden did a small little burn out and then Pow i'm in drive but nuetral is what it seems like.Turn off car and now only have 1st gear but in all gears.???????In rev motor revs to only 2200 but like its under severe load with no reverse movement.nuetral forget bout it.I let off the brake in N and it will drive forward.(I drove it across the street to the store yesterday in neutral)D rest of the way down is all first gear. But when the night this happened i was trying to nurse it up a steep hill to get home and on the back side of the hill i turned the vehicle off and restarted it while rolling 35-40 and put it in drive and i'm almost positive that it gave me third.Trans felt absoultly great up to this point of ????It also make a faint like buzzin?ratling sound when floating the gas in park to get to the above mentioned 2200 RPM. Sounds like a loose flex plate.I've been searching all the threads and find alot of siliar cases but none described or from me read to be the same problem. Was going to maybe drop the pan today and try to troubleshoot solinoid or the screen in the tranny.I am totally stumped and I've been turning wrenches for about 15 years and owned a shop out here in FH for about 2 years. So i know a thing or to and have lots of contacts out here but cant get a good idea whats up.Fluid was alittle dark for my taste but not alarmingly bad as I've seen much worse and it was not burnt. Please advise i'm desperate.Torque converter staying locked up maybe??? Any input would greatly be appreciated. Thanks and sorry for the book i just wrote.O yeah also the OD light is on and off intermit. and check engine light on.Cant pull codes since my scanner is only for can and obdII.PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!Pics soon but dont even want to look at it right now. It had a Lexus flip cellphone and rear spoiler added at time of original purchase. Has all other options except heated seats and the fold down drink holder that mounts in the dash. Don't know if that option was available in 93. Condition I purchased it in. * indicates seller disclosed items. * multiple door dings * two half dollar sized spots on r/h fender chipped paint * antenna inop * trunk struts inop ( because spoiler was added @ the lot) * batteries dead in keys * Passenger seat r/h rail adjustment gear stripped - Ignition key plastic bushing worn - Wiper blades dry rotted/replaced - a/c center dash vent cracked - r/h door fwd wood trim cracked - l/h door has small cigarette burn hole at window switch - l/h lower seat trim piece worn through to plastic @ seat switches - front tag holder not inst, but included with car - on the ride back to NC from FLA the engine coolant light came on, added 20oz water went out. - some cd's will not play on 12 banger err msg. these same cd's will play in my T-100 toyota p/u. I give up? - center caps on wheels faded to plastic from over washing I guess - Gold emblems also faded from repeated buffing. * car has Dayton tires on it, feel pretty good nice and sticky # pwr steering was replaced by 1 st owner as well as a window regulator, multiple complaints on the factory cell phone as well. She heard lots of noises as well. ( it's a car) Other than all that it is an awesome car, When I take the O/D off and switch on power, it feels like a car on rails with a hole in the gas tank because I can see the needle move. LOL. This will be fun to restore & drive. Now for the questions. 1.Is it possible to buy a parts manual for the sc series? 2.Does anyone have a link/addy or phone to a person or place where I can find out the production data from the factory for the SC series from 92-2000? 3. What brand car cover would you recommend? That you have long term experience with for us garageless folks. 4. How many parts are interchangeable with a supra if any? :cries: A little update on my car. I took my car to a pitiful body shop because some jerk hit and ran me at Wally World. Right behind the pass rear wheel not huge dent but it hurt my feelins. Anyway I had it repaired also had a couple of bad spots in the paint fixed while I was at it. Well I got it back and it looked great except for one spot at fron of pass door that had no previous problem. Took it back 3 more times. The last time I picked it up he did a *BLEEP* job of buffing out the paint and after I got down the road I noticed a big old crack in my sunroof. Someone was coming behind him and trashing his work after he did it. Never has been resovled to my satisfaction. After I got the sunroof replaced I have 3 SC's to gleen parts from. I had a ruff running engine. Turned out that it needed spark plugs and new wires. That cost me $575.00, They wanted $775.00 but I used to work with the GM at the dealer so he helped me out. NOw think about this for a minute. I could have gone out and bought Aircraft quality spark plug wire and new plugs for less than a 100 bucks. I didn't own shop manuals when I had this done, I bought some immeadiately afterward. I am a Helicopter Mechanic for a living. So fixing this car is not that big a deal to me. I also bought one flood car for the body panels and a wreck for the interior was gonna blend them together for a daily driver. However The wreck was bad enough to trash it all that way to the firewall ( this was not mentioned in the description ) Still gleaned a lot of good parts from it. Hell I have just about got it stripped to the frame. Just windows and engine/tranny left in it. Got crazy spare parts now. LOL. I do know this though. If you take your SC to a dealer you are going to get hurt real bad come check out time. Theywanted $125.00 to change the oil. The best Oil I can buy is only $40.00 a filter 7.50 maybe. So what are they doing wearing silk gloves and getting a NASA engineer to change my oil? Well more on this jewel later.
Dan The Big Man
I just purchased my sc300 a few onths ago with 132,000miles on it for $2550 BUt of corse with that price comes with wear and tear.. :( i jus found out needs lower control arm bushings and a ball joint. Leaking valve cover gasket, p/s resivor leak. Rack and Pinnion bushing shot, but replaced them with aftermarket bushings. Interior front seats ripped, both door panels seem to have been ripped right off the door itself, previous owner obviously has no idea how to take the door panels off. Clutser needles dont light up. steering wheel ripped . E-brake doesnt brake but it does make a clickking noise when ur going down the road with it slightly pulled up. I love the car, even if it has a thousands problem with it but its a lexus and i know i could fix it right and put some goodies underneat the hood. Im going to a Toyota/lexus (T-TEn) automotive program to put me in a dealership, plus i got acces to alot of online websites so it should be a little easier fixing my SC up :) but doesnt help me being broke lol
decemberist ring
I bought a 1995 SC400 with nice new 17inch voxx rims that had the timing belt replaced at 90000. It was in pristine shape inside and out. I took it to a body shop and mechanic and it passed with flying colors. The only problem was the steering wheel tilt, which I fixed for free. I thought I got a steal because I only paid $4000, and since I am only 17 it was nice to be able to be able to pay cash for a great car. It has 150,000 miles on it, but from what I have heard, it should run for a good while. I have only fixed the steering wheel and added silverstars, but I would like to change the torque converter and speedometer cluser.
khicken
I bought a 92 sc400. with 200,000 miles on it for 2600. I really regret it. since buying it I- fixed drivers side door(wouldnt open)$800, replaced trunk lock $200, replaced heater control valve $300, replaced water pump thermostat and power sterring pump $1000, 2 15 inch kickers and pioneer deck and 6 by 9's $800. Now I just bought struts for $250 off of ebay front and back. and every time I turn the car on, and *BLEEP*ft to car, whole car shakes. Mechanic says engine mount problem. socalsc
I bought my Lexus SC 400 just over four years ago for $11,000. Other then upgraded wheels and exaust it seems to be stock. I have used your forum a number of times and just recently changed out the trunk struts and attennae mast. The experience of others here has been most helpful. I have had some really nice cars over the years and this ranks right up there with the best. I really enjoy driving this car but am a bit worried about how to repair my failing needles. I had 89,000 miles when I bought it and now have 130,000. I look forward to putting another 130,000 miles on it .
Jesterrace
I bought my '95 Lexus SC300 last week with just under 133K on it for $7100 after tax, title, ect. Outside of the Optima Red Top Battery that I had swapped out from my old car the thing is 100% stock. The dealer that I purchased it from replaced all of the plugs and wires and both of the catalytic converters. Overall the car is in great shape for it's year but it does need a few things done to it. I have replaced the serpentine belt and I am currently replacing the timing belt, a coolant hose and getting the brake fluid flushed. Beyond that it will need tires and the front struts replaced before too long. Struts on these cars are EXPENSIVE. It's not the struts themselves that are expensive but the labor involved. That smooth ride doesn't come cheap. It's worth it though. Out of all of the cars I looked at in my price range, this was the first one that had ABSOLUTELY NO LEAKS!!!!!!!!!! wlfgnggtr
New Lexus owner here B) Just picked up a 92 SC 300... It has 165.000 miles on it... The car is black with a tan interior, fairly good shape. The interior could use a little work, but for it's age, I felt that it was in great condition. I am the second owner, bought from a "little old lady" that hasn't been using it very much lately. Seems to drive well, and feel pretty tight. I plan to do a few upgrades. Tires and wheels will be the first priority, and then I'll repaint it (I am an Automotive paint tech by trade, and have been for the past 24 years) I paid 3000... So far the only problems that I have are the lights in the needles... The fuel gauge lights up, the tach has about a 1/4" of light, the speedo and fuel gauge have no light at all... Looks like I'll be contacting Lextech ;) The factory Pioneer stereo no longer works. When I bought the car, it had an aftermarket deck and amp that I removed to give back to the previous owner. Seems that the Car Audio shop that did the install removed the factory amp and CD changer :o I have a complete Audio system from another vehicle that I will be installing after doing a little fab work on kick panel pods, and the dash opening... So far, I am very pleased with the SC 300 B)
song17
new owner of a 1992 sc400, just bought it in early Sep. Solid car with 133k miles, In general the car runs great, except some usual small things: the fuel needle works, but that part back light is off, the driver side window button needs some big pressure to move, but any way it still moves. The body has some scratches (it is white, easy to see that) Two things are bothering me: 1. The car has some gas smell, even after the cars runs for 20 minutes, the smell is still there. not very strong, but pretty annoying, maybe it is the lazy cat? 2. I have a bit doubt on the power of the car. If I floor the gas, the car would not downshift immediately. take a bit time. and the car is not accelerating that fast. After the car goes to 70 miles, it just would not downshift any more. I know peak torque comes around 4800 rpm , but it looks like it just would not go that high, any one can give me some suggestion. RX7 RAGE
I just bought a '92 SC300 and the 12 disc cd changer does not work. Does anybody know how to fix it or what I have to buy?
lexypam
I bought my SC300 August 1997 from Longo Lexus, ElMonte, Ca. $34,000. 1300 miles on it I am second owner. It is black on black, 132,000 miles now. I have enjoyed every single mile. It has been serviced by Lexus dealship, except this summer I had a parts repair shop reffered by another Lexus owner replace the alternator, rack and pinion. The headlamps are foggy, I have the parking lot dings fixed. Now the cd changer does not work says error so wonder what that will cost.
