Ford: They Don't Make The Taurus Anymore?

dont tell me ur looking at a taurus...you could by 20 of those with the # of cars u have lol...jk dont be offended were just jealous haha ;)

Ughh hell no i'm not looking for a taurus...please, i wouldn't do that to myself LOL. just wondering why ford would stop production of the taurus when they were their best selling cars.

I think i've seen maybe...3, Five hundreds in my whole life!! They're not selling.

The Taurus was a best seller just as the 500 will likely be....thanks to Hertz/Enterprise/ corporations. A Ford salesman told me the 500 is the replacement of the Taurus (don't know if it's true or not). I really like the 500; the interior is HUGE (big trunk too). It rode well and was quiet for a Ford. Ford took this car in the right direction when they based it off of the S80 but kinda took a step back when they but the small Duratech in such a large beast. They are really a lot of car for the money since they max out at ~$25k.

They're not selling the 500 at fleet prices, Ford wants done with that. At least...right now they do.

Agreed, the Taurus became nothing but a rental car and it was dragging Ford's brand image down. The 500 is a much nicer vehicle.

LOL we had a taurus as a rental in Florida a few years ago. I didn't like it very much; it had cloth seats :angry:

haha. :lol: i find that amusing. :P well the rental van we had on our long east coast trip was a Chevy Uplander LS, and it was sorta, kinda, but not really, leather seats. It 's those leather seats in rentals that have some type of cloth in the middle of them (didn't really feel like cloth, but I don't know what else to call it). I had to "live" with it for 2 weeks, 5,400 miles, and about 10-15 states it's been thru, even CANADA!!!! lol. :cheers:

Probably faux suede. I think it's called microfiber. I have a sportcoat made of suede, but not the knock off stuff. Lol.

All I can say about Tauruses is that they can withstand 90 MPH brief loose shoulder stints in the Arizona desert. :o That was certainly interesting.

Even when Tauruses have been good cars to the rental companies, there will sooner or later be a need for change. I'm sure that the addition of the Ford 500 to rental fleets will improve each company's image, and show that they are looking out for the best intrest of customers, new and previous.

I was just wondering what ford was thinking. I THOUGHT that the taurus was their best seller considering those have been the only ones i've seen around here.

As for the Lincoln LS, its not related to the Taurus or the Sable at all. The Lincoln LS is built off the same platform as the Jaguar S-Type, RWD.

As for the name, my guess is its because of the Chrysler 300, 500 being a higher and more auspicious number. Alphanumerical names are in.

The Ford Escort was a top seller at one time too and yet Ford stopped production. All American car makers frequently change the names of their models. Reason? Nearly all have problems with reliability and durability and eventually the public figures this out and sales plummet. Then to attract the public's attention again, the American car makers come out with new names like Ford Focus in place of Ford Escort and Ford Five Hundred in place of Ford Taurus, Chevy Malibu in place of Chevy Lumina and so forth and the whole cycle repeats itself again. The few American cars that have kept their names for along time, like the Buick LeSabre, are the rare ones that at least have average reliability.

The Japanese don't have to change names all the time because they don't build cars with chronic reliability and durability problems. So for example, Camry has been around since 1983. Corolla since the 1969. Nissan Sentra, Maxima and Altima have been around since the 1980's. Honda Civic and Accord since the 70's and early 80's and so forth.

Why is the F body gone?? Because their looks are right up there with the Aztek, so only those who bleed for GM bought them. The rest of that nonsense is not even worth the server space it's taking up.

Also, which is "better?"  Mercury or Ford. Which is supposed to be the higher end?

Of course the Mercury is supposed to be a higher class model over the 500 (that's the very reason for Mercury's existance.).The Montego has hid lights and led tail lamps. I'd probably get the Mercury for those reasons, but I like the style of the 500 better.

I find your comments very funny! Why you ask?? Because the very truck that you brag about having 460k+ trouble free miles went through a name change of its own. We have pickup of our own (which is rusting away from too many years in St. Paul, MN), and when you tell someone you have a Toyota Pickup, most people don't know what that is since it was finally given a real name in the mid '90's- "Tacoma."

And what ever happened to the Cressida, Tercel, Previa?? I'm sure there are more that I don't know too.

Where did they get the name Five hundred anyway? I don't really care for that name.

I'm sure it's a tribute of the Fords of yester-year with 500 in their name. Galaxie 500 immediately comes to mind, and when I hear the 300, I think of the old Chrysler 300s.

The Cressida became the Avalon, the Tercel became the Echo I'm assuming, same thing with the Paseo- became a mix between the then current MR2 Spyder and the new one, and the Previa became the Sienna.

Toyota models that have held the same name since their first year of production are, in no specific order ( I think these are all that kept their name ):

Supra

Camry

Corolla

4Runner

A more recent name-change, although not in the Toyota lineup, is the previous generation Miata, that has now become the Mazda MX-5.
