Andrew I don't doubt you. I assumed he meant the o-ring that is part of the filter. In all the cars I have worked on and owned, I have never seen a separate one on the housing. On my current 1MZ-FE the oil filter housing looks molded into the block and there is no o-ring that I can see other than what comes on the filter itself. The 93 engine could be different. steviej

the oil filter is easy to replace. The o-ring is attached to the filter. you don't have to do anything to the header to get the filter except wait for it to cool a bit. Sometimes the oil ring from an old filter stays behind when the old one is removed. the new filter is put on and now you have two filters. This can cause leaks because you now have a thick space of gasket. Also filters that are not tight can weep oil. what makes you think it is the oil filter o-ring? Valve cover gaskets are a particular problem area for oil burning on older ES's. steviej

think twice about the remote start. The key has a chip in it, so that will have to be placed in the car at all times. Many places will take a valet key and cut off the key stem and hide the chipped part in the car to aid in the starting procedure. If you do go for it, have it professionally done and make sure you get a complete work warranty incase they screw anything up while wiring it in. Personally I would skip this aftermarket option. DVD players, sorry again, have it professionally done. $600 for the 30k is inline with most Lexus dealers. Call around to the Toyota dealerships in your area, they will be cheaper for the same service. 30k is all fluid replacements. If you are good with a wrench, the oil & filter are easy. I posted a tranny fluid drain and fill thread in the workshop forum. You could save some money by doing these yourself. The only other fluids to replace are brake fluid flush, power steering fluid flush and coolant fluid flush. Have the dealer do these three. Rotation of tires, air filter, cabin filter are the easiest of all and can be done my you in your driveway, too. good luck. steviej

TSB = Techincal Service Bulletin. These are usually generated by the manufacturere to notify dealers, mechanics, owners, public, etc or new repair procedures, upgrades, part replacements, etc. Most can be found on www.alldata.com as for changing oil brands and seeing a change in you mpg, probably not. Some have argued that changing oil type (conventional to synthetic) will increase your mileage by about 1 mpg. Then there are those that don't see any increase when changing. Everone has their own anecdotal accounts. lastly: Yes, oil questions will always stir up debate, especially between a select few members. It is getting old. If you have an oil question in the future, please use the search funciton as it has most likely been asked and beaten to death previously. steviej

the ebrake is also connected to the same light. Josh, sounds like you got a loose connection and or the cable is very tight on you ebrake. If the light is not on when the ebrake is off, I wouldn't be concerned. There is a way to loosen up the cable a little. steviej

you did the right thing going back to the dealer that sold you the car. And they did right by you by fixing it. This is a common problem on early ES's. Take a few minutes and read the ES FAQ (frequently asked questions). You might want to have a qualified mechanic check the rear main seal, too. These tend to we leaky too. before you spring for a new cat, try several different brands and grades of gas. Some brands have higher sulfur contents than others. Cats are expensive and I would hate to see you spend all that money to find out it wasn't that cat that was the problem. Almost every recent make of Lexus has a TSB associated with "sulfur smells from the exhaust". If your emissions testing is passing, then you cat is performing the job it is supposed to. steviej

Add the proper brake fluid to the reservoir. Toyota and Lexus float switches are very sensitive and even though the fluid level may still be between the min and max lines, the level of the fluid can still trip the level switch thus triggering the BRAKE light. It has been this way for a long time. Very sensitve switches, especially when going around corners. steviej

chris, save yourself the obsessing and don't waste you thoughts on it. you will be fine. you can wait until your next regularly scheduled oil change. It will do minimal damage if any damage at all until then. When you do change it, just go back to a better grade filter. happy motoring! steviej.

just make sure the throttle body cleaner (or carb cleaner) says: "SAFE FOR O2 SENSORS" on the side of the can. I do a complete brake fluid flush every 30k. Tranny, coolant and brake fluid at the same time. They all kinda go hand in hand for me. Why? I haven't any idea, I just do it that way. It's easy for me to remember. steviej
