I agree Gray, but bottom line however, someone in the Toyota/Lexus stable had to many 'wobbly pop's' when they designed those engines & they could have changed it at least on the 1997 re-design. It's a plain bonehead location for the oil filter to be :chairshot: . My previous GM products (91 Olds 88 & 91 Buick Riviera were a snap) as was my 2001 Nissan Maxima.

Special Break-in Oil 5000 Miles First Change?

It might not be necessary to do an 'early' oil change when one buys a brand new vehicle, but some of the more 'fussy types' (me included) it's a small price to pay considering the cost of brand new vehicles these days. B) ;) -
I have to agree as well. The Michelins are a good choice however, I think I would have leaned towards the Yokohama Geolander G-051's or the Toyo Open Country's for mess money & no sacrifice in safety. Having said that.....Tad you did get a good tire & they should serve you well. B)

← I finally remembered to look at the tires that came on my 2001. It had 49K on it and was on it's 2nd set of times (spare was Bridgestone). It is a Yokohoma YK420 model, a M & S model sold by Discount Tire. Looked on their website, it is a H rated tire in the size I have 225R16 but comes in V rated in the low profile sizes. Says it supposed to have good wet traction and long tread life. I agree with the good wet traction, will find out about the tread life. They do ride quiet but that is such a subjective observation. ← I'm a bit confused lexu from your posting, what is the exact size tire you have on your GS? & they are Yoko's YK420's? B)

I agree ford. B) However, I do trust my independent mechanic & and he does the oil & filter change (& washes the area where the old oil filter spills the oil out). But I do enjoy doing the job myself & will eventually. exdot, I change my oil plug gasket (or washer whichever you like) every other oil change. As an example, I had my oil changed a month ago but in that time I drove to Florida & back on vacation.......I changed the plug gasket then & today when I changed the oil again, my mechanic looked at it & he said it's still like brand new so I did not change it this time around. I get the plug gaskets from my Lexus dealers parts department. They are the metal ones & are dirt cheap. I bought a dozen of them for less than $3.00. ;)

Correct sunman B) monarch, let's ask the question then to other members......how many Lexus owners of any model have suffered transmission problems (severe or minor & please describe in detail) as a result of using Amsoil synthetic ATF? :whistles: Below, I have posted a link that gives what specs the Amsoil ATF meets (or exceeds). How Many Miles Do You Get On A Set Of Tires?

If you go to a top quality high performance all season or even an Ultra high performance all season, you will get much more mileage out of your tires. Any type of 'summer' tire is not built for long mileage I'm sorry to say. :( -

Sorry to hear about your mis-hap......we've been having the same problem with the road in Toronto which are horrible. There was a news clip of the same thing you mentioned but because we are dealing with basicly the government, it's a crap shoot.......you have nothing to loose by trying, but don't spend a lot of time on it because they say it's highly doubtful any compinsation will be handed out :( Keep us posted. If nothing is done to fix these rims (if they can be fixed that is), another suggestion is to try & find 2 replacements at a auto wrecker or salvage yard as I'm guessing those rims are very expensive to replace at your Lexus parts department. -

I will be changing my own oil eventually & have to concur with lexusk8's suggestion as that's the way I will be doing my oil filter change. I'd like to sit down with the engineers that were responsible for Toyota/Lexus 3.0L V6 & ask them of all places you could put the location of the oil filter, why there? :chairshot: It almost seems like it was an afterthought & they forgot to include the oil filter until after the engine was designed! B) :whistles: I've heard all the Toyota 3.0L engines that date back all the way to 1992 are like this. :(

sunman, does your owners manual call for Toyota Type IV fluid? I ask simply because I know that the Amsoil synthetic ATF is compatable with the BOTH the Dexron III & Toyota Type IV fluids......just courious as I plan to put the Amsoil ATF in my 01 ES which calls for Toyota Type IV. Any help on this would be appreciated. B) :)

With proper maintenance & rotations, you have a lot of life left in them. ;)

My Maxima did have all speed electronic traction control yes, ABS, & a different kind of skid control feature. I find it astonishing that so many auto makers use that tire (RE 92's) on vehicles that roll off the assembly line. :chairshot:

I'm just going on their look, but who knows. Maybe I'll try em out next time. As for the RE92s, I'm not saying they're a good tire, they're a horrible tire. But they were better in the snow than my Toyos. All the consumer reports in the world won't take the place of my own firsthand opinion having experienced both tires on the same car in the snow. The Toyos made my car positively undrivable in the snow where I got around well on the Bridgestones. You said the SAME thing about the Toyos last year when I bought them ;) More and more I just think this car is better on Ultra High Performance tires than Touring tires. ← At the time I bought my Toyo's, I did not know the Falkens' even existed, & the Triple Treads were not on the market yet & looking back if I was in the same situation, I still would have gone with the Toyo's. ;) There are better tires on the market now to be sure, that's why I suggest them to many members now over the TPT's. I don't quite share your views about them being undrivable in the snow.....but in certain winter, they did make me a bit nervous. I've said it before, that no tire today (especially an all season) does everything that we would like them to do in every weather condition.......but that's the compromise by not using winter rubber when conditions warrant. I am like you sw, for the handful of bad winter storms, I have a hard time justifing the investment on a second set of wheels & tires. I respect your views that the Bridgestones that you feel they were better in snow than the Toyo's.......having had them on my previous car as factory equipment for 2 years, I don't even come close to agreeing with you (they are simply pathetic) as I got stuck twice when I had them in light snow.......two winters with the Toyos, including large dumps of over 8" & never been stuck once (It actually seems like a moot point IMO to comment on the Bridgestones about winter performance when they were an adventure to drive on even with light drizzle or a mist in the warm months especially hydroplaining & wet braking, never mind when the temperature dropped below freezing). I would have rather have bald Toyo's then the Bridgestones any day & sent a rather unpleasant letter to Bridgestone Canada expressing my concerns which of course fell of deaf ears. But two each their own. ;)

The rolling resistance for the Falken's are on the CR comparo chart. Not 100% sure what the rolling resistance is on the Triple Treads, however my Dad has them on his car & has commented on how much better gas mileage he is getting than the old Generals that came with the car. Based on the way the tire is designed, I'd say they are at least slightly above average. B) Here is a link from Tirerack explaining about rolling resistance. So you buy one at a Lexus dealer that's been properly maintained. If you bring in your service history if your trading in your ES to the Lexus dealer........they can't 'low ball' you on the trade in value if you can prove all records are up to date, because chances are they will sell it on their lot & not wholesale it out. B) I have no concerns personally on the re-sale value of my car. ;)
