Oddly, the 2000 model year was the first in which a chrome spare wheel was available on the LS. From the CPO model library for the 2000 LS400: "Some individual vehicles will have an optional chrome-plated spare included with optional chrome-plated alloy wheels." "Optional Features: - Chrome-plated spare included with optional chrome-plated alloy wheels"

There are probably adjustment screws on the back of each headlight unit similar to on my 2000 LS400. There may be specific instructions for your car. The repair manual for my 00 LS says to turn both screws on the back of each headlight unit the exact same number of turns when adjusting the aim. It may be different for your LS430. There is very little space behind my headlights to maneuver a wretch. If mine needed adjustment I'd have my mechanic do it ... don't want to go blinding people with the HID's.

Even the $275-$300 I see from one of the on-line Lexus parts sellers seems expensive.

Good! I was just trying to make sure that you really, really took a close look at the hinge wires. Countless people have taken more than one inspection of the hinge wires to find broken ones. You did not answer my question ... have the trunk hinge wires been fixed in the past? You should be able to tell. The reason I ask is that about 0% of gen 1 LS400's make it to 17 years without the hinge broken wire problem arising.

Because continuity does not = adequate or consistent voltage .... the wires separate and rejoin enough so that current is intermittently transmitted through the wire.

I sold my 90 LS in 2003 and its current owner told me that he has had to repair the hinge wires again -- they just keep breaking. If your hinge wires have never been repaired (new wires spliced in), there is an extremely high probability that this is the problem. Few gen 1 LS400's make it very far past 10 years without the trunk hinge wires breaking. Be sure to carefully check all the wires. Many people find multiple wires broken -- even when the insullation is completely intact.

Did you completely unwrap the wires in the left trunk hinge and separate them to check them closely. Even if the insulation isn't broken or cracked, a wire can still be broken inside the insulation. Check the hinge wires again and wiggle each wire to see if is broken inside the insulation. This is sounding like the exact same problem that first bought me to this forum in 2003.

SK, in the photos of your car, are both the low and high beams on? If both are on, do you have a photo with only the low beams on?

I just love your statement: "Now at this point I could easily panic but I kept going trying my best to at least make it to my destination." This is one of those times when the correct thing to do is to panic. Never, ever continue driving a car when you "see smoke coming from under the hood". Stop immediately, evaluate the situation and, if necessary, call a tow truck. I doubt if forum members are going to be able tell you whether or not you have done lasting damage to your car. If you didn't fry the engine due to overheating, there is a good chance it will be fine. Consider taking your car (i.e. having it towed) to a competent mechanic for evaluation and repair.

The photo of the alternator guard on the thread I remember has been deleted: http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index...guard&st=15 It says to "make a protective cover for the alternator out of an empty 1 gallon bottle of Chlorox". I don't remember how they attached the guard to the alternator -- maybe it was with a metal strap. Edit: Whoops! Further down the above thread is another photo of an alternator guard made from a plastic bleach bottle. I don't see how it is held in place. I don't remember the guard I saw a long time ago hugging the alternator as closely as the one in the photo.

Geez, the instructions have been recently removed from carstereohelp.com. All you have to do is pop out the wood console panel and center vents with appropriate trim removal tools. You will then see that the nav/HVAC/head unit is held in place by four 10 mm bolts -- two at the top and two at the bottom. First pull the gear shift all the way back. Be gentle but firm in prying out the wood panel/ashtray and the center vents. The center vents tend to fall apart but can be put back together -- keep track of the vent parts! The vent assembly is expensive if you lose a part. You will have to unplug connectors for seat heater switches, VSC switches, ashtray from the console wood panel and the emergency flasher switch from the center vent assembly. It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it. I've removed my HVAC/head unit a number of times and can do it in less than five minutes. Oh .... lay a towel on the console to lay the nav/etc. unit on when you pull it out so you don't scratch the console vinyl or anything else.

My guess is that the problem is in the head unit or amp. The problem could be in either. I had the right channel in my 00 LS cutting out last year and most people guessed that it was an amp problem. It turn out to be a bad connection at the balance control of the head unit. The problem was intermittent for several weeks before the right channel failed completely. Is your system the standard Pioneer or the Nakamichi? Have any friends with a similar GS? I figured out that my problem was the head unit by connecting my amp to someone else's Lexus.

Don't know about the 96 LS but on the 98-00 LS400 the wiring harnesses are different and you can't use a Nak headunit with a Pioneer amp and vice versa. BTW, can you get the connecting cable for the CD changer from the salvage company? (In case it is not already in your car.)

Buttons 1, 2 & 3 were used for speed dialing stored phone numbers. Button 2 is dual function and works as a mute during a phone call. Dealer installed Lexus phone systems were available for most models from the 1990 model year through the 2003 model year and even in to 2004 for one or two Lexus models. If I counted correctly, there were at least seven different phone systems available in the U.S. during the 14-15 year period. Very different Lexus phone systems were options in other countries. The advertisement you are looking at is incorrect. The remote has nothing to do with the radio with the exception that making or answering a phone call automatically muted the radio ... also automatically lowered the HVAC fan speed. Attached is a photo of the phone remote on my 2000 LS400 -- looks familiar, doesn't it?

Try to sweet talk your mechanic or a Lexus dealer into downloading the installation instructions from https://techinfo.toyota.com If not, you could download the instructions by subscribing for $10 for 24 hours ... and you could download lots of other information at the same time. I will be surprised if the wire harness for the CD changer is already in your car if it didn't come with a CD changer. I hope you got all the parts needed to mount the CD changer. If not, try sending a PM to forum member dcfish and ask if he has what you need.
