  1. You need to downshift when going down/up steep hills, I guess.
  2. Sw03es, my son is on your side on this subject. But since I still love my 1990 LS from the day I bought it 15 years ago, I'm kind of addicted to the LS. Anyway, we still have time for final decision because, first, we have to sell my wife's 2001 Avalon XL. Besides, (if we decide to buy Avalon), the 2005 XL seems to be hot right now, so it's very hard to negotiate for a deal below $25,500 (basic model, no options) at this time. Our current 2001 Avalon is still in pretty good shape at 70k. So far our only maintenance expense is a new set of tires at 45k (not counting: oil, ATF, PS fluid changes) (no new brake pads, belts,...yet). The main reason we have to change cars is getting safety features like curtain airbags ...... I feel like this forum is part of my family. Thanks Sw03es and everyone.
  3. I'm sorry for the confusion. He meant he would have to remove those 2 bolts only, so the rack would be detached from that area of the chassis. I just wonder why removing these 2 bolts could mess up the alignment?
  4. My mechanic said since he has to remove both cushions at the same time, the rack and pinion would be completely detached. And after reinstallation, the steering rack might be "shifted to one side". I already told him that I just had an alignment done a month ago at Lexus dealer, but he said that won't help. I hope he is wrong.
  5. Anything from today's market won't ride like a '90 LS. The first LSs have a very, very soft ride. I also find that German V8s give off a little noise but only at WOT...not a bad thing in my mind! B) A '06 S500 is a great car...enjoy her! 01-03 LS430s are extremely similar...no real changes came for the LS430 until '04. ← Blake918, what is the real changes on the '04? Maybe I should pay a little extra for those changes since KBB shows only about $3k difference (private party, same high mileage at 70k).
  6. My local mechanic said that alignment should be done after changing the two steering rack cushions on my 1990 LS: "Grommet, steering", part # 45517-50010 and 45516-50011. Is there a way to avoid the alignment? Thanks.
  7. I'm just curious to know why do you want a 2002 LS430, but not 2001 or 2003 or........? By the way, my wife just bought a brand new 2006 s500 about 10 days ago. The engine noise level is high comparing to the LS's. This is our first MB ever. Today is my first day on the driver's seat and the drive is not as good as with the LS, but my wife just likes to have a MB, that's all. Women buy things on impulse, I guess, specially whenever they can afford the monthly payments.
  8. Based on my 1990 LS400, and starting from the left of your picture, the amperages are 30, 120, 40 and 60. And if you look at the inside of the fuse box Cover, you could see "ALT 120A" corresponds to the broken "white" fusible link, 2nd from left on your picture. Good luck.
  9. Marwankw, thanks for making me feel much more comfortable with my decision.
  10. I had the same confusion about the Fusible links, and I also broke one of the plastic tops too. (I accidentally shorted out the alternator circuit). So I loosened 2 nuts/bolts and bring the fusible link along with the owner's manual (to show the exact location of the Link in question) to a Lexus dealer to buy a replacement of same amperage. And the new one has the same size and ampere rating but has different color on the plastic top. For other problems of yours, I'm sorry I've never had them before so I don't know what to say. I hope other members might have some helpful input.
  11. I'd go with the majority which is 2001 LS430 for another car. I'd fly most of the time, as Monarch suggested. Thanks SKperformance, oohryry, sha4000, nc211, blake918, monarch, and everyone. Thanks for a great forum.
  12. What is a seafoam? Please explain. I did a search and couldn't find anything. I remember long time ago, because of a recall, Nissan had to replace all 6 injectors on my very old Maxima, and after that I felt like I got a new engine installed.
  13. Yeah, they were messing with us so we decided the best way to go will be changing the name and opening a broader market to not just Lexus vehicles, but all kinds of Luxury vehicle. Lexus too try to go after Lextreme because the word "Lex" and even tried going after Carson Toyota because they weren't "Lexus". I guess it's a very strong name and reputation that they're trying to protect. ← Do you guys carry stainless steel brake lines for 1990 LS?
  14. Does it help by taking out all fuel injectors and sending them out to get cleaned?
  15. What should I buy, a used 2001 LS430 (~$30k+) or a brand new 2005 Avalon (~$25k+)? The difference is about ~$7k. I plan to use the car for traveling North to South of California and come back, with approximately 1000 miles per round trip, and about 2 trips each month at the most. So, anual mileage would be approx. 100k. And I'd like to keep the car for as long as I could, maybe 10 to 15 years or more. To me, safety (curtain air bags), reliability and driving comfort is important. Please help. Thanks.
  16. Leatherseats.com has some great stuff. ← I'll contact them when it's time for my next project. I'll probably have them replace the leather on shift knob and steering wheel too. Thanks.
  17. What do you think of the $700-DIY kit (leather cover only) for console and 4 seats, at autoleathers.com?
  18. How can we clean the MAF on a 1990 model ? Thanks
  19. Since cranshaft pulley covers can be removed, I just wonder if it's possible to change the crankshaft oil seals (front and back ones) without going thru the whole process of a regular timing belt change. That way the labor charge would be minimal. I had the timing belt changed at dealer a couple of years ago. After 70k miles, I got oil leak at the crankshaft and i's getting worse over time. Thanks.
