  1. my 92 ls has original shocks/struts at 240,000 miles, when driving on the freeway its a little squirrely and not super confidence inspiring, i know the shocks are tired but what,by my meager description doth the brain trust here think thats indicitive of? ball joints(most likely)? control arms(2nd most likely)? The motion i mean is that as speed increases the steering doesnt get tighter or more focused but rather kind of sloppy and barge-ish, if you know what i mean. Kinda reminds me of my grandpas old 92 caprice-classic,on the highway that thing reminded me of the s.s. minnow. Thanks in advance.
  2. hello all, I have a 92 ls about 240,000 miles, have owned an integra, an maxima and by far, mileage and wear notwithstanding the ls is the best car ive ever owned when i surf this board and read posts and replies it just makes me want to go joyriding in my car and crank up the glorius nak! When i bought my car about a year ago i put new tires on the tire shop (a goodyear place-surprisingly very honest,i am the biggest skeptic of ALL car repair type places) told me that my shocks were the original ones. Suffice to say i havent replaced them yet, and i can never find the oem part number(s) for them. So my idea is what if a sticky could be pinned that would list common part numbers for the ls, sort of an easy reference, maybe even it could be set up somewhat like a poll insofar that members could post numbers when they have had to replace them or whatever. By that same token what if there was a sticky that had maybe the top 20 online parts dealers/store with links? Just suggestions not trying to create headaches for the people that maintain the site. Your godfather thanks you.
  3. HHmmm, this is an interesting question all ive ever heard about the daizens is how wonderful they are in every aspect, blah blah vlah, etc, etc?!? Now some are saying that they ar squeeky and provide more of "a sports car" feel. Whats the real deal then?
  4. hey nc211, what kind of tires are you gonna get?
  5. In regards to tires again go to the tire rack's website and enter in your car and it will give the most popular tires for that year etc. Then you you can also read personal reviews of all the tires that are available for the the ls. It really is a great resource. Good luck. :D B)
  6. Hi Gene, not sure i can help you with the whine from the front, but as far as tires, after reading some impressive reviews, I decided to buy Avon Tech MS550 Hi performance tires from tirerack. All the hype is true, these tires are ZR rated, cost less then $100 each and drive excellent with a great handling considering the weight of my car. For that price you wont; even get the cheapest Michelins out there ← just my two cents on tires i have the goodyear comforttread on my 92 ls and they are super smooth and comfotable, they are known to have a high rolling resistance so yoy may lose 1-2 mpg, but for a really comfy ride AND for being 80,000 mile tires they are great. When putting tires on the ls it may serve you well to buy the tires online and have your local lexus dealer install them as the ls is a cantakerous beast to align and balance. Good luck and welcome, you made a good choice with the ls.
  7. speaking of which does anyone know what the model number or whatever of oem kybs are called? I always seem to find gr-2's and know that they are not the original ones. all my shocks are original and need replacing however i believe that i can find oem's cheaper than dealership prices. Thanks in advance.
  8. sorry if i missed something but isnt the later ls's speed limited, whereas the gen 1's arent? Wouldnt that account for top speed?
  9. Ok,Ok Im not trying come off as an !Removed!. I take exception to dfkd or whatever her name is,if you read his other psts he is quite an angry guy, whatever. My point is,from my second post in this thread, that itunes is free and gives all the options of a nero ,toast ,windows proprieotery application also, and i should have said this, itunes natives format is aac a very efficient and good quality mp3 like codec(you know what a codec is ?mr.dpfk guy) that also happens to be a "protected" file format., meaning that songs(files) stored in that format can only be burned so many times, etc, etc. However, itunes gives you about 5 different options for conversion and storage one of which is the standard mp3 format not protected or bound by any perameters. I was only suggesting that as a FREE and HIGHLY SUPPORTED program, itunes would fit the bill for people on a budget and that it is a highly capable application. It is about as close to one click burning as you can get. Thats all im saying in that regard. As far as blank cd media goes, well i would agree with angry guy that black cds are superior, i believe so. However you need to examine what goes into making cd media work (or not). First of all ALL cd media is subject to a phenomina called BLER or Block Error Rate. All cds are have this, some are better than others. Lets examine what a cd is; a piece of aluminum-like substrate sandwiched between two pieces of clear plastic..When a cd is "burned" a laser "etches" "pits and landings" (peaks and valleys) into the "aluminum" substrate that represents 0's and 1's, which mean nothing until the cd is put into a device that can reconstitute those 0's and 1's into meaningful information, in this case music. Block Error Rates (BLER) means that all cds will have areas on the substrate that cannot be recorded to. All hard drives suffer from this as well, certain parts of the platters cannot be recorded/written to. All cd media has certain amount of this BLER,combine that with different cd burner/laser mechanism stability, cpu buss (i/o) capability to properly transfer that data to the burning device in the right amount of time and amount(not to fast, not too slow) make for instances where some cdrs will fail and for seemingly no reason whatsoever, some batches by the same manufacturer will be great some will not, combine that with the above and you see that no hard and fast rule applies. Burn speed on modern systems do not a difference make, perhaps a cdr with a high BLER mixed with a too fast burn speed might produce burn failure, but i assure you 99.9% of time audio quality will not have suffered. The reasons i know this stuff is because i am a recording engineer as well as a technical/maintenence engineer in los angeles for professional recording studios. Couple all that with varring degrees of repair with the lexus cd changer, what kind of shape the suspension and tires are in and you get different results. Cheers.
  10. uuuhmm no dude, that wasnt irrelevant. people were discussing burning cds and such mp3's and what have you. Here more to the point download itunes its cross-platform, and will handle any mp3-cd file format conversion, burn cds or mp3 cds and a ton of other goodies, and its free. Who's irrelevant now?!?
  11. do yourselves a favor and get a mac. and yes i am a geek, and yes i love my LS.
  12. theres a ton of aftermarket rotors out there;slotted /cross drilled whatever your looking for also there is a supra twin turbo brake kit for the ls. it consists of a 4-piston caliper and other goodies for $7-800 i think. supposedly it bolts directly on. There is recent post about it if you look back a coupla weeks or so.
  13. sorry for the bad description the right name is the "egr vacuum modulator". When you open the hood and you see the lexus logo on the manifold, on the right hand side you'll see too round valve-looking thingies(dont know how else to say it) with a bunch of hoses and such coming out of them, The one in the back is the egr valve and the one in the front is the "mushroom" valve, sorry for flaky description thats how a mechanic described it to me. Cheers.
  14. Hello Jeff, I have a 92 with 240,ish and i recently had that exeact same problem. I took the car to a trusted mechanic and it was solved by the replacement of " mushroom valve" . The offending valve is located on the driver side of the intake manifold. In my case my "mushroom" valve was just frozen with carbon. My mechanic said the part was about $45. no performance lost when it was bad but i wpould assume that it might cause failure when smogging the vehicle.
  15. Hello phillipguru, would you mind sharing your expertise on "cleaning and re-seating" the maf in '90 ls400? This has come up recently on board and i dont seem to be able to get an answer on the early ls maf's. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  16. Im totally interested and have wondered about using that antenna for the stereo!?! Does anyone out there know if and how it can be done? For what its worth i have 92 with nakamichi. Thanks.
  17. i have a 92 ls would cleaning my maf help this seems at face value to be a pretty logical idea? anyone?
  18. very cool thats sorta what i was trying get at. thanks for the reply, its one of those things that would be impossable to know that beck/arnley was often japanese made. thanks for the reply much appreciated.
  19. Hello all,i was wondering when buying non-oem parts for our ls400's does anyone know or have preferences about after-market parts makers. To give an example im in the market for some suspention parts ie;ball joints, tie rod ends and front rotors and i have come across great deals, but am unsure about the quality. L have seen a lot of parts made by CARDONE and BECK/ARNLEY to name a couple does anyone have experience with these and are they worthy of our lexus? Thanks again in advance---neil.
  20. Hello,i pulled the code to my traction control and it gave a "51" which according to the manuel says that there is an engine control malfunction which is probably a short or an open connection in one of the various wiring bundles of the trac control. Also the manual states that this error will cause the check engine light to turn on as well. So, i do have an egr issue but my paricular trac issue also causes the check engine light to come on so it wasnt two diferent issues(although it is). I live in so.cal. maybe i should look into bypassing the trac anyway? Thanks again to all who helped me.
  21. thank you very much econ. i thought i saw somewhere that the tarc light is telling you that something is being recorded to the cpu. i will try that technique with the trac ecu . Although im still puzzled as to why they are coming on at the same time, and i might add yesterday after filling the tank they both came off together too?!?
  22. thanks a bunch linuxfan,im a mac addict so a default linuxfan in a stepchild/3rd cousin sort of way. Anyway i got code 71 which i believe is an egr malfunction, but code 70 is also an egr malfunction. Does anyone know the difference? hopefully i have just a stuck egr valve which can be cleaned? but then why does TRAC light also come on? Thanks in advance.
  23. hello the other night i was driving home and all of a sudden out of nowhere my traction (TRAC) light AND check engine light came on simultaneously. of course this was after i was talking up what a great car this is to a friend :cries: . Anyway does anybody know what this means? The car seems to be driving fine, although sometimes it seems that i smell something sort of funny, but my sense of smell sucks and i dont trust it. Or can anybody tell how to check the codes? I think ive heard something about ye olde paper clip method? But where? And how? apologize in advance for wordy, long winded message and help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
  24. thats funny vbdenny, what year electra? my other car is 66 sedan with the 401 and the optional buick engineer approved directional compass :D
  25. thanks for all help. im kinda bummed because of resale or whatever legitimacy and also the bragging rights of being able to oh 350,000 or whatever. By the way punching and such did not work(wouldve been cool if it did, guess i dont have the fonzie touch) and yes all other instrumentation works....thanks. .......
