  1. so have you guys any experience with the "cool blue" sylvania's? also maybe i should look into an inexpensive hid system for a 1992 ls, are there any out there guru's?
  2. considering their brightness, and that they are incandescent, they must draw a lot of current, so that may be the case, but they did last like almost 3 years or so, 40 more dollars...isnt there also a new and improved silverstars now anyway? great excuse to try them out....thanks again guys.
  3. thanks guys...as soon as i get my hands on it , ill report back....actually i did check all pertinent fuses already, which is why i am stumped
  4. thats next, my sis is using the car right now...just not driving at night obviously...i hope in a way thats it, they are silverstars put in at the same time, it would be really odd and strange that both would die simultaneously....in the world of tubes and valves and whatnot that would just be cosmically rare, like winning the lotto... the reason i ask is that by now, all common issues with these cars are well known...it may be a relay, like i said the cluster/dash still dims when the switch is on...
  5. fwiw its worth, the first car i ever bought(first i ever financed) was a 93 acura integra, and honda was known at the time, probably still does, used "nisin" pads as oem, and while they stopped great they wore out super fast, granted much like the early ls, the design of the braking system was a little underpowered for the 90-93 integras. the point is even oem suppliers can have products that can stand to be improved upon, if you guys need proof of this just look at oem supplied tires...
  6. really???!!! no one has any idea or anything at all???!!
  7. okay high beams and removing - terminal did not help....i hear a relay switching when i turn high beams on...hmmmmm.
  8. hello ya'll....my sister has basically been driving my ls400 for the last year or so, and despite her total derise to run it into the ground, the beautiful machine is still running soild.... except, the other day the headlights stopped working, the circuit is still up and running, as the cluster dims accordingly when i switch them on, i haventr check the high beams, and the fuses are healthy... i did try to get top the circuit breakers but that was way to hard to get to so right now ive got negative terminal disconnected to see if that will somehow reset them... they are silverstars that i installed in a pair, could they have gone out? that was about 3 years ago when i put them in.... if their is an electrical problem, what could it be outside of relay, or some other part failing? also in the lexus owners manual, it does say if a major electrical part is not working, to check the big high current fuses for failure,in the engine bay, i did that and they look good, although the white "120 amp" looks funny but not broken, as well as different from the others.... i am going to try the high beams and the - term thing now .....to be continued...
  9. yes thank you, i did eventually do just that, at least in the trunk ecu...why is that locked with a key anyway, and what "key" unlocks that? however i didnt plug anything back into eachother, will this make a difference or just make the wires not be open ended? on a similar note, my stock antenna died quite some time ago, and i have a rather long autozone cheapie in there as a replacement, but my am and to a lesser degree fm reception is just !Removed! awful, by just plugging the cheapie into the antenna coax, am i bypassing an important grounding circuit that would otherwise give me decent or better reception? does anyone know?....i did have a ground wire run to the chassis for awhile and while that helped reception,it really just made for rather loud 8khz loop.... i think i also here atlernator hash i the signal as well, isnt there some sort of shunt that can be added to that? thanks in advance.
  10. how and where did you unplug the phone? in the trunk?
  11. hi there i have a 92 ls 400 with a nakamichi and the lexus phone system, for like a week now when the car is turned off the phone system beeps once every ten seconds, i tried pulling the 15 amp fuse for the phone but than my whole radio amp was gone...!! arrrgh, what can i do to disable this once and for all, i dont have or have ever had the actual cell phone so this system has no use for me... thanks in advance... p.s. does anyone know if the stock pioneer/nak speakers are still available in the aftermarket?
  12. yeah before i bought my 92 ls, my girlfriend and sister were like, "thats your grandpas car, yada yada yada"..since than they all love this car, and consider it a real treat when they drive it, so all it takes is well working example and a solid road test and that pretty much kills that whole "buick" notion... i cant even imagine what theyd think of an 01...
  13. Yes, just soldered on stock connector. no rms means; root mean square, it is a mathimatical function of the average peak power vs. the absolute peak power that the drivers coil and suspension can handle before failure... to put it into car terms, it is somewhat like saying your ls rms speed is say, 90 mph for a sustained time before engine failure, if that makes sense... in an amplifier rms is obtained by multiplying the absolute peak before full scale distortion by .707... hence if your amp can has a peak power output of 1 volt( which equals +4 dbu peak to peak) than your rms would be 1 volt X .707... this is how the stereo shops pray on ignorance...beacuse stating the wattage of circuit really doesnt tell us anything except how much work the amp has performed, not what its capable of... so when a shop says 1200 watts!!! thats almost ALWAYS the peak power handling of the system before failure, not in any way indicative of what you could expect on a regular basis...
  14. go for the 93, or the 94...just beacuse, all other things being basically equal, the brakes are way better post 92, the original brakes 89-92 were undersized, 93's are bigger and better, plus my 92's odo died at 238,xxx, whereas the 93's use a digital odo that doesnt break.... if i could do it agian(and i may) id look hard for a very good 93+... good luck and let us know what you do...
  15. welcome barry, it is a common egr issue, you need to replace the mushroom valve, if you open the hood and look at the intake manifold it is a small mushroom looking device on the drivers side, they cost about $60-$80 to buy and its just a a couple of small hoses and bolting the new one in. do a search of this site and it may yield a picture or check lexls.com, they may have a tutorial on the subject.
  16. yeah kewlguy, what flavor of gs is it? what color? options? please post pics when you can, i really think those gs were really sharp looking when you got used to them.....i remember here in socal ,when those came out the 400 was really, really jocked as one of the hottest, faster things out there......
  17. this past thursday i got in my beloved ls400 and couldnt get the heat to turn on...so i lfted the hood and saw that the the water valve wa crusted over with dried red coolant, ok no problem i thought, ill just scrape the crust with my finger and manually exercise the cable and will be fine, right? Well later in the day im driving and i notice that that there is steam coming fom the passenger side of the engine compartment and (horrer of all horrers!!!! seriously) my temp gauge is rising above halfway :cries: , so i get home ,leave the car running and pop the hood and see that coolant is almost pouring from the hose that goes right into the water/heater valve........my question is, besides losing probably a ton of that 8 month old toyota red coolant, does that seem like my only problem is the valve is just stuck closed, i.e., broken or am i in real trouble? I know that a new valve can be had for about $70 or so, but is install easy? and what else should i do or check when installing a new one, besides adding coolant? i noticed that the assembly appears to fastened to sorta to the firewall, does that just pull off? Please if anyone knows whats happening here let me know. Btw it is a 92. Thank You in advance.
  18. hey fidgets if you make a good living wage in the u.k. than california shouldnt be a hard transition, The u.k. is far more expensive(for the u.s. dollar) than vice versa. Isnt london currently the most expensive city in the wqorld to live in? next being new york and then san francisco, i think. check out craigslist.org and it will give you an idea of what youll be in for as far as housing. And sanjose is kinda a suberb of s.f. i think so if your used to the city you could conceivably live in sf and commute to san jose, plus there are a ton of good cheap used ls400's here in so.cal if you need to pick up transportation. Good luck.
  19. yeah ive spent plenty of time in the newport/corona del mar/balboa area, in fact i was at corona del mar on sunday, which is just down pch about a half mile from fashion island, when i was younger i used to work for haagen-daaz and would have to deliver to fashion island and let me tell you, as local so/cal guy, even i found fashion island to be pretty useless. If your gonna stay local (re;so cal) then might i recommend going to the gaslamp district of san diego? Also, if you like beer, in north county there is the stone brewery(do a google search) fine purveyors of arrogant *BLEEP* ale, ruination ale, double *BLEEP* to name a few...if yo do go down to san diego check out coronado island. oh and Rx is right san francisco is well worth it. Ive made it to sf using the 101 to 1/cabrillo highway via santa cruz then through i think the 173(blood alley) in about 6 1/2 hours before. if you want to travel up the 5 and come through south san fran that would take about 4-5 hrs, but much less scenic. Good luck and let us know how it went. Those *BLEEPS* = b a s t a r d
  20. i love the nxt too, it goes on easy, comes off easy and really does make my 92 silvermist ls400 look really good. Im not a professional detailer but have always enjoyed doing it to my own cars and without sounding cheesy it is a great all in one thingy. Here in so.cal with the car sitting in the sun most of the time i find that an application last about six weeks with just a rinse and dry once a week in between.
  21. hey nc, i have loved your posts always, so while in california rent a convertable and give yourself a few days and head up the coast hwy1 not the 101, they are different things although they merge from time to time and go up to san francisco and check out the beauty along the way. Youll find that once out of southern california people become a hell of lot more human than in so.cal. If you make it up that far drive a few more hours up chico and check the sierra nevada brewery, you can also get dinner there, for some of the best beer ever. Whew. I feel like huell howser.....also if you go up the coast check out san luis obispo, a farming college(mostly) town that also happens to be on the coast. Big sur, monterey, santa cruz, berkely are all bigcities that come to mind up there, but any where you go , you cant go wrong. let us know what you did. Also if your an AAA member just find one and theyll give maps and books for anywhere in us for free or even custom if you want....
  22. We will try and sneak this one under the radar.....I am not a guru, but the toyota info service at http://techinfo.toyota.com/ is only $10 to join for 24hrs. You can download everything related to the specific car type, including all the LS models (getting it back on topic hehehe) including all the troubleshooting. Chances are the horses mouth will have the answer. Good luck. ;) Thanks man i already used that for my ls....and they are not the greatest things for diagnosing for a non-mechanic like me, thanks though. I did get my full LS repair manual from that site. Frickin awesome.
  23. i am posting this as a favor to a friend who owns a 1990 celica gt automatic that seems to have a huge tranny problem, in which during acceralation the car just seems to putter, and almost just drag also there are times (often) when the tranny will just "pop" out of gear while driving and throwing it in nuetral and restarting the car will usually solve this.....the car has about 160,000 miles on it and other than just really funky acceleration the car otherwise feels good and solid. My question, if anyone can contribute is, does anyone think this tranny is just trashed, or could there be a bad solenoid, or an ecu problem, or maybe the tranny is not the problem and it is something else? also my friend has put some lucas stabilizer in the tranny to try to remedy the issue(slight improvement, not really though) but on the lucas bottle it referred to something about "rings" being destroyed? Does anyone know what these"rings" are? Apolgies for the rather long post and thanks to all in advance.... By the way i know this an off-topic topic for this specific forum, but i trust no one else more than you guys for a question like this thanks again......
