Japanese automaker Toyota has developed a safety technology that it says will keep the driver's eyes on the road.

An image-processing computer system developed by Toyota Motor Corp. and a Toyota affiliate uses a camera near the steering wheel to detect when the driver stops looking straight ahead.

The system flashes a light on the dashboard display and emits a beeping noise when the eyes start to wander. If the driver still doesn't respond, brakes kick in, Toyota said Tuesday.

The feature will be offered in Lexus luxury models set to be sold in Japan in spring next year. Toyota won't comment on whether it will be offered in models sold abroad, company spokeswoman Keiko Nakajima said.

Research shows that most accidents happen because the driver isn't paying attention, according to Toyota.

At this rate cars will be driving themselves in my lifetime.

Thats crazy! I take my eyes off the road and the car hits the brakes?! Not any car I'd ever own...

thats crazy, what if you had to check your sideview to change lanes or back up?

well there are pros and cons. the pros have been mentioned, but cons like: side mirror check, quickly changing stations (well there are controls on the wheel), changing temps on a/c, etc...

there would probably be a lot of bugs in the system, but it does sound kinda nice!

So this thing looks directly at our eyes?? And if they look somewhere else it freaks!!??

What if we're wearing sunglasses? Or what if someone had an eye patch for whatever reason and it couldn't see that person's eye? Would it not let you drive?? haha

There must be something i'm missing :(

thats creepy...that would cause an accident right there..hit hte brakes in the middle of the road suddenly with no warning to other drivers....that would never work for me...the future is going to take the joy out of driving by the car driving itself....if nobody wanted the experience and just needed to get around they would get kia...but they dont so we get a lexus
