I was driving my 1992 LS400 down the freeway today when I heard a soft, high-pitch hiss from the driver's side front of the car, as if something was decompressing. Then my dash lights all lit up and I lost my power steering. Now the car won't start. Does anyone have any ideas about what happened and what to do about it?

The AC compressor is located on the driver's side and the belt that drives that also drives the PS pump and the alternator.

Check to see if the belt is still on.

The belt was off. It broke. My friend and I replaced the belt. Now the fan is wobbling. I'm wondering if the fan needs a new fan clutch. I'm two hours away from home. Should I just risk driving the car with a wobbly fan back home to my own mechanic?

Great call! Well done with so little information.

Perhaps the bearings in your pulley are bad which is why cause the belt to throw. Trying to drive it 2 hours is futile if that is the problem because you will be unhappy.
