Unlocking All Doors On Walkup?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I just got my Lexus IS250AWD (no nav)and love the car so far.

I have the keyless entry and start button system and would like to know if there is a way to set the system so that when the drivers door unlocks when I walk up to the car, all other doors unlock too. I am often getting in with my kids and the way it is currently working, I either have to use the fob to unlock all the doors or get in and hit the unlock button on the door arm rest...There must be a better way!

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Dennis

Thanks for your reply - I was wondering if there was a way to change that setting myself. On my Sienna there are a few things like that you can program without the dealer but I guess you need a scan tool to do it on the IS. I also imagine the dealer will charge some ridiculous amount to make this change...

I was trying to avoid having to take the FOB out of my pocket (damn, I have become lazy!).

 Are you kidding...I don't even like driving my wife's X5 anymore because I have to use the key fob to open the doors and start the car. I am lazy too!

I know with the nav system you can go in the settings to change that...however with out nav I have no idea how to get in the custom settings? I am sure someone else will chime in... you may want to check out the owners manual.

you may want to check out the owners manual.

Nah ... who would want to read one of those: http://drivers.lexus.com/t3Portal/document/om/OM53852U/pdf/08_Customizing_U.pdf

Yes, I have read through the manual, and looked at this PDF as well. I was hoping there was a way to set this myself as with my Sienna, changing some of these options are not documented anywhere except in some forums. The link above mentions that specialized equipment is required...

With a new car, Lexus allows for customized changes whether you have Nav or not, free within the first 5,000 miles. You can have the keyless entry set so that when you touch the door handle either just the drivers door opens, or all the doors open. I have my car set so that putting my hand on the handle of the drivers door or passenger door unlocks all doors. If security is an issue, say at night in a parking lot with people milling around, you might want it set so just the drivers door opens. To my knowledge this information is standard for all keyless entry system. I don't think it is a special option.

Soap box time: I get tired when people constantly berate dealers, without prior knowledge, and assume the dealer is going to try and cheat them, gouge them, or over charge them. Some dealers may be guilty of this. But you should have known when you bought a high priced luxury car that it would take some high priced service once in a while to maintain it. Yes, some of Lexus prices for parts are crazy. However, the dealer does not set that price. Nor do they set the markup. My dealer, over five years, has bent over backwards to offer me discounts, no charge parts, and extra service when warranted, just to make sure I am a satisfied customer.

End of Soap Box Rant:

Paul, Thanks very much for your concise reply, greatly appreciated.

With regards to your soap-box reply: It sounds to me like you have had excellent experience with your dealer, I envy that. I must say that since I have been buying new cars (1994) from honda, toyota, mazda my experience with dealers has been nothing short of disappointing. I have had to argue with service managers over the most mundane things that should be covered under warantee and have usually left with results in my favor yet being made to feel like they are doing me a favor. In fact, most recently, on my 2009 Sienna, I was quoted $79 to adjust the door open option, as they said it had to be hooked up to their computer - turns out I found out how to do it on a message board such as this - it was simple and did not need a scanner or computer.

I hope that my Lexus dealer provides the sort of service that you receive (or something even close) and until then, I will refrain from `dealer bashing` The car goes back in 2 weeks for some sort of 1500KM inspection (free), I will ask them at that time to make this adjustment.

Cheers,

Dennis

The reason LEXUS set the open door function this way was for personal safety,...as in underground parking/parking lots. And yes, you are entitled to ONE customized settings change free of change on a new vehicle, so make sure you have all your changes ready.

End of Soap Box Rant:

OK ... a calm "rant":

I learned still again on Friday how erractic and silly the local Lexus dealer can be on pricing. Not many months ago, I priced a new battery since I intended to replace mine before winter - we've gotten the longest life from Toyota branded batteries. I was quoted $115 including installation, which, of course, is about a five minute job. The battery was the same part number as sold by a nearby Toyota dealer for $105 but is warrantied in a Lexus only if purchased from a Lexus dealer.

When I stopped on Friday to have the new battery installed, I almost had the work done without checking the price again. New price: $157. New price including installation: $250

Needless to say, I laughed and left and will either buy a sub-$100 Everstart battery at Walmart or a Kirkland battery at Costco.

Here is the "official" word on LPS customization from the Lexus website:

The Lexus Personalized Settings (LPS) can be programmed in two ways: For most models equipped with the available Navigation System, the driver can modify the settings themselves; for other models, including those without a Navigation System, programming is done by your Lexus dealer via a one-time, complimentary offer during the first 12 months from the date the vehicle is sold. Please see your Lexus dealer for more information.

I think this is the answer you are looking for. This is a page from my owner's manual: 2007 IS350. Hope it works!

SailorDan: Thank you very much! This worked perfectly. Oddly it is not mentioned in the 2011 manual. Thanks again!

As for the dealer on this: I called my dealer to schedule my first appointment at 1500km - I asked about making this adjustment, They confirmed that withing the first 10,000km they will make 1 adjustment such as this for free but after that they charge $49.95 minimum, because they have to hook the car up to a computer. Well, we now know that's BS.

Thank you all for your replies!

Dennis

:) It's actually a very old document from the Clublexus forum, way back when we first got our IS cars. It's good to see Lexus actually make some of these functions available to owners in the new NAV units,...about time.
