Schnitz Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 I go out to my car in the morning the last couple days and it won't start. All I get is a clicking. Cluster, radio etc... comes on but fan doesn't blow any air through vents. If I put it in neutral and let it roll forward a couple inches that works for the most part but sometimes it doesn't and I have to boost it. I had my battery tested after a 90 min. drive and its fine. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

curiousB Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 How was battery tested? Was a cranking current load simulated? Just measuring voltage doesn't tell you much. Are you sure there isn't some device left on that bleeding down the battery after the engine is off? As mentioned cleaning the battery posts is a good idea. Make sure the bolts are torqued well also. You can't pull the 200 or so AMPs the starter needs through loose or oxidized connections.
VBdenny Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 If the battery is more than 3 or 4 years old, I would replace it. Testing a battery isn't always accurate.
Schnitz Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 I cleaned the terminals and made sure all the connections were good. Still same problem. I had the battery tested with a device that does the cranking load simulation and all is good. I think its the starter. I say this because if I roll it forward a little it starts - at least 80% of the time.

Schnitz Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 Ya I know. I've been researching and it looks like a serious PITA. I just can't think it's anything else.

Schnitz Posted July 4, 2009 Author Posted July 4, 2009 Had my local mechanic replace the starter with a complete remanufactured one. Took him 4 hours in total. Total cost $650 US. No problems anymore. Thanks for all your input guys.
