Biaggi Posted January 27, 2003 Posted January 27, 2003 Ok, Does anyone know how to diagnose the problem with the Check Engine light? From the owners manual, it states that if the Cehck Engine light comes on it (1) is out of gas or (2) there is an electrical issue. Since I have a full tank, I suspect #2. My LX has 100,600 miles on it and I just recently changed the oil. After about 20 minutes of driving, the check engine light came on. Any help? Thanks in advance,
Biaggi Posted January 28, 2003 Author Posted January 28, 2003 Ok Guys... Thanks for the no response... I'd figure there would be a Lexus Tech lurking around, but I'll try to disclose all knowledge I have.... My wife took the LX to the dealer and they stated that this is a common problem with the LX450's. That the catalytic converter registers false readings when in frigid temperatures. He checked the codes and also the cat and verified that all is fine. So he just reset the codes. SOOOO if you have a check engine light come on, it could be the 2 reasons stated in the previous post or a false reading on the cats in cold temps (below 30 degrees ambient) I haven't seen any Service Bulletins or Recalls about this but I believe the service tech at Johnson's Lexus in Raleigh. C'mon guys... lets make this forum help us!!! Try to post something useful when you find things out! Thanks,
ttobin Posted April 1, 2003 Posted April 1, 2003 i had this happen to me this morning, i appreciate your post. i was looking on the UK posts and it appears that it could be something to do with the fuel cap. i think i will try to reset mine by pulling the fuse. cheers

I confirmed with toyota corp. that this is a normal thing with the normal thing in colder area's on the 450's. I also found out that you may be able to resolve this with a new cat. Not sure on the price. You may want to contact Lexus to replace if it becomes an issue.
Drumboy Posted May 16, 2003 Posted May 16, 2003 Hey I just found your post. I have a 94 GS300 and my check engine came on right after I bought the car from a small independent car lot. It turned out to be an EGR hose which the Lexus dealer fixed for a small fee. This was after I spent weeks trying to get an independent mechanic to fix it. Sometimes the dealer is the way to go. Good luck!
JPI Posted May 24, 2003 Posted May 24, 2003 What is the code? I never run into this problem before. I don't see why the CEL come in when there isn't a problem. They might just want to get you out the door. Get me the code and I will an answer for you. JPI
dougjohn Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 You can get a check engine light for any number of reasons. Anything from a bad O2 sensor to an EGR valve. One of the more common reasons is that the gas cap is not on tight enough. As for false readings from the catalytic converters...I've never heard of that one. Regards, Doug

Thi Posted August 27, 2003 Posted August 27, 2003 Tom, Are those codes generic or some belong to Lexus? How do you read the code without a scanner? Thanks. Thi
tem Posted August 27, 2003 Posted August 27, 2003 They were posted as Lexus 1996 & Newer OBDII codes, but apparently a few won't be used, Such as the Electronic Throttle control. The rest look good. I am also wondering about the download command. I will look at the Data on the E1-T buss to see if it looks like the function is available.
SKperformance Posted August 28, 2003 Posted August 28, 2003 i though obd 2 was for 97 and newer but i know the 94 es 300 1mz-fe engine is also the worlds first obd 2 standard engine i hope you don't mind as you have this already up i am going to paste it in the tutorial pages for all the codes as my book has over 52 pages with 25 per page of codes don't worry i will put them to you credit
dougjohn Posted September 8, 2003 Posted September 8, 2003 In the Lexus LX world, '96 would've the first year for ODB 2. I think they became standard in Land Cruisers in '95. ... Doug
Joel40 Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 More than likely its your oxygen sensor saying your catalyst is bad. This is because these go out about the 100,000 mile range. There are anywhere from 1 to 4 sensors costing about $100us each. Replace those even if you don't need too because they are about expired anyway and can cut your gas mileage down to half. Tom_S Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Same thing happened to me. Drove off the lot at a dealer in a 96 lx450 with 109,000miles and the light went on. When I went to see it, the car was TOTALLY out of gas. We drove directly to a gas station and put some in....but that was about 25 miles before the light went on.... Worried about the car now... it did seem to get really bad gas mileage on the way back... HOW do you check for the code? Does it have to be at a toyota dealer? I assume you have to plug something in to read what it is....?

Thanks, I have a 99 Lexus lx 470 and had check engine light come on once when I didn't tighten the gas cap all the way and second most recently but it not the gas cap. I had a diagnosis of bad O2 sensor which was replaced. The check engine light was off for about 3 days but has recently returned. I think that it is the cat. coverter, but it doesn't seem to be causing a problem at this point so I give.
