Air Conditioner Q:

You should always turn off the a/c and run it in fresh not recirc for 3 minutes before shutting off the car especially when it has been running more than 30 minutes.

This will help remove the excess water that builds up and smells from the water turning to mould because it does not dry

Is it necessary to turn off the air conditioner before you turn the car off?

If you don't, when you turn the car back on, will it hurt the battery to start the engine AND run the A/C at the same time?   Thanks

There's no need to turn off the A/C when you stop the engine. When you turn the ignition key to the start position all the accessories are not powered, except the ignition, until you release the key and it's in the run position. This will not hurt your battery.

P.S. I have been doing this on all my Lexus's since 1991 and never had the mold problem that some people are having. Besides I don't have the time to go through all the bother of resetting things to dry out the evaporator.

I always turn my AC off (and everything else for that matter like heated seats in the winter, CD player etc) before shutting my car off.  B)

Agreed , I turn everything off also, Just a good habit like putting on your seatbelts. ;)
