  1. I think Pagemaster is talking about an engine mod, not a redesign.
  2. Good point! All those guys are over on ih8mud tho, right? Too bad this site doesn't get more posts. ;)
  3. Your better off with the OEM part. I've never done the swap, but I have the FSM and read the instructions just prior to reading your post (and I don't have the FSM's here at my office). The FSM only lists about 5 steps, so it seems that it would be a simple job. It is not an auto tension system and I think you need some sort of tool that will gauge the tension on the belt (something about tension between A and B, or ???). Wish I could be more helpful. I hate to say this but this Forum is not the best place for mechanical advice. You might want to try www.ih8mud.com. There's a forum dedicated to the UZJ100 (or 100 series) Land Cruisers, which is what our LX470's are. I've got some great advice and learned a hell of a lot about my 100's ('98LX470 and '99 TLC). Also, one of the forum members (CDan) is a Toyota parts manager for American Toyota and sells OEM parts to forum members at a discount (I bought my FSM's and other stuff from him). So, basically you can get great advice and parts in the same place. I really wish this site would pick up, but I've been lingering here for quite some time and there's really not a lot of posts (or posts with substance).
  4. No, unfortunately not. I'm in Florida, we get the heat along with an equal amount of humidity. I love being near the beach but I really miss the terrain out west.
  5. Agree, but maybe if he was locked and the tire pressere was down initially he may have been able to escape.
  6. One of the pulleys is the belt tensioner, IIRC it's the one to the right of the one on the far left. And, I think it's threaded backwards but I'm not sure. What did they charge you for just the belt?
  7. ARB designs Bull Bars to protect the front of your truck when hitting Bull Kangaroos, small trees, bushes, etc. It is made out of stamped steel vs my plastic cover. The bull bar is also specifically designed to mount a 10,000lb winch while allowing the air bag deployment sensors to work. It is designed to handle the strain of winching a 6000lb vehicle out of anything. Thanks, George I grew up in Arizona and I don't recall coming across many kangaroos? :P Make sure you post some pics of the LX with the Bull Bar!!!
  8. Whew, any damage? I think maybe lockers would have helped, I have one on my '99 Land Cruiser (rear and center) but not on my wife's '98 LX470 (only center). And it really is effective. I'll drive into the deep sand at the beach with the TLC but not the LX, I just don't have the confidence in the LSD. So which bull bar did you get? I'm hoping to put a ARB Sahara bar on the '99.
  9. So how'd you get out? Looks pretty hairy, was the tide coming in or going out???
  10. Well the obvious answer is "No." Expecially not for a $50K luxury SUV. However I don't have any suggestions for you. Good luck with that! :P Get some music that matches the rythm of the sway and have fun! :whistles:
  11. IMHO, I think the best (and cheapest) option is to get the factory deck fixed. I know it's not as fun as buying new toys, but nothing is going to look as good as the OEM deck. The way they have designed the bezel that goes around the deck, it's going to be expensive to have something fabricated to make an aftermarket unit look good. 1) See above. 2) I don't. 3) Yes 4) I've heard good things. 5) No thanks. Good luck!
  12. If you paid for a 4 wheel alignment on your UZJ100 I beleive you got ripped off. There aren't any adjustments to the rear wheel alignment. You can only do thrust angle alignment on the front.
  13. Nope, that doesn't sound normal. I think the speed threshold is around 15 MPH.
  14. 40K miles? Why did the dealer tell you that you had to pay for it? 50K mile bumper to bumper warranty!
  15. I'll sell you mine for half that! :P
  16. They both went bad at exactly the same time??? That sounds fishy. Backtrack the wiring, could be a simple fuse (which the dealer should have caught). If not, maybe a bad switch?? I would guess that both mirrors wouldn't go bad like that, maybe one, but not both.
  17. I don't have them, but I'm sure they do. Great idea! Buy the FSM's with the saved money and DIY!!!
  18. Save yourself some money, go to a reputable shop have 'em do a transmission flush and replace with synthetic trannie fluid ($125). Replace the center and rear dif fluid with synthetic (about $40 ea). Flush the cooling system (?$), get a new serpentine belt ($100). Do the rest yourself and save a lot of $$$$$. If you haven't already, replace the motor oil with Synthetic, I do these myself it takes about 20 mins. and is super easy! Do the rest of the stuff yourself. $$$ quotes are guestimates.
  19. What makes the K&N oil filter better??? But, I'd stay away from the K&N air filters. I think they have better flow because they don't filter as well as the OEM filters and will allow more dirt into the engine. IMHO.
  20. I think if you go over 15 MPH is goes back to the neutral position. But, I thought that if you lower/raise the vehicle then turn the system off it will stay in that position.
  21. Preface: I'm learning too, so I'm no expert. Here’s my take…….. The salesman is right. You will most likely only need 4HI 99% of the time (depending on your plans with this vehicle). Just remember that the LX470 is a Toyota Land Cruiser all gussied up. The TLC has a long history of being a very capable off-road vehicle. http://www.tlca.org/trails/articles/history/landcrsr OK, the 4WD HI vs LO. Refer to the manual for shifting between the two. But, if you are going to be driving through deep snow, mud or sand 4Lo will give you added traction and torque. Use the center differential lock to gain traction if the either the front or back wheels do not have traction, this will send equal amounts of power to the front wheels and the back. This link will demonstrate how the whole thing works. http://www.safari4x4.com.au/80scool/george...iffs/diffs.html It's written for the 80 but a lot can be applied to 4WD in general. Big difference is the LX is not going to have front and rear diff locks. A center diff lock only.
  22. Murch, don't let that deter you from doing the change yourself. It's literally 4 screws (as I recall). Super easy!
  23. BTW, there's one on eBay right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...item=2465426240 He says the dealer charges $520.00 for it, seems a bit rediculous. But you may be able to pick it up cheap!
  24. You have to remove the entire center console cover (area around the shifter). It's not screwed in, but rather held in place with clips, so you have to remove it slowly and methodically in order not to break anything. You'll have to unplug the switches for the heated seats and hight control as I recall. To get it all the way out you have to unscrew the 4hi/lo shifter knob.
  25. DougJohn, LOL! You have to remove the cover on the skid plate. Center of the vehicle about where the cabin starts. The cover for the Oil Filter is near the front drivers side, also behind a cover on the skid plate. Use synthetic....I use Mobil 1. http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html
