  1. I have a 98 so I assume they are identical. If not go with the 94 instructions. The front brakes in my opinion are the easiest in the world. So much that I actually enjoy changing them. Just remove the metal wiring holding the pins, then remove the pins (careful not to let the clamp holding the brakes in place fly out and hit you or cause injury). Then remove the brakes. The sensor is a little tricky as you have to work it's way out of the brake pad carefully so you don't damage it. Then just do a reverse process. I use long neck pliers to position the calipers. The rear brakes are similar to the post on lexls.com that was posted.
  2. Man, you gotta be kidding me. I'm the only one in this forum that doesn't change their transmission fluid. Wow. I'd better have it changed soon then. I've gone about 40,000 miles. I thought it was something you do every 60,000 miles or so.
  3. My LS400 is the first starter I ever had to replace in any vehicle I have ever had. I believe you are right about the heat. Do you notice that your engine is very hot after driving. Sometimes I can't even check the oil dip stick because it is so hot to the touch. I've never had a vehicle where the dip stick handle is too hot to touch no matter how far I drove. It's entirely too hot inside the engine compartment. That's probably what's causing all of the oil gelling problems they have been having. I switched to Valvoline semi-synthetic and it works a lot better than conventional 5W-30.
  4. I have 115000 miles. I'd better change mine soon. How much does it usually run. I know it has to be a lot of work.
  5. I'm not sure about the 1991, but my 98 had a problem and I took it to Midas and they found the rubber connection to the little spray nozzles under the hood came loose. Check that and the spray nozzles to make sure they're not clogged.
  6. Ok, now what? Price keeps going up. At $699.00 now. What is the Cooling Tempertature Sensor? Can this keep my vehicle from starting? One Stop Auto said they have the starter in and now I need a CTS. Wasn't it working before I took my car in to have the starter replaced. I know they have to take off the manifold to get to the starter. Is it posible to damage this CTS or do they go bad. Have to keep this rent a car another day now. It's a Nissan Altima, I liked them until I finally drove one now. You feel every little bump in the road and the engine noise is horrible. I don't mind the noise of a growling engine but this aint that.
  7. Oh well, have to rent a car. They thought I meant alternator. The cost to replace it is now 600.00 and it wont be finished until tomorrow.
  8. Thanks Threadcutter, but that looks like a whole lot of work to clean the throttle body. I'd rather spend the 100.00 and hope they clean it as good as the tutorial was done. Thanks again. If I need to change the throttle body then I probably would do this considering the big difference in cost it would definitely be worth it then. However, don't know anywhere to purchase a throttle body for an LS400.
  9. nc, man you're funny. I think the place wants about 100.00 to clean the throttle body. I can't do it myself because I don't even know where or what it looks like, let alone what it's for. I imagine that it's the body of a throttle as Martin Lawrence might put it.
  10. Having the TB clean won't cost you too much. Start troubleshooting there; the suggestion of scanning the car is not a bad one either, because you said the Check engine keeps coming on, so it means something in the system is out of specification. Keep us posted! C. PR ← I took it to Lexus of Towson and had them perform the scan. That's how I know it's the throttle body. I think it was code 935 or something like that, but they told me that was causing the check engine light and VSC to illuminate. I'm going to try and have it cleaned next Friday. I'm spending all my money this week on my starter. The starters on the 95-97 were recalled. That didn't help me much.
  11. ← Dude, I'm in Maryland. I love the fact that I put my Lex on 153 mph, but they can't fly just yet. But thanks anyhow. Let me know if he's visiting Maryland anytime soon.
  12. I didn't know the second generation LS had exhaust tips. I personally never did like the 1st generation exhaust because I believe they were too close together. Makes it look like a old hot rod or something. Anyway, the pics that SK put up are dazzling. I'm with you Lexuses71, I always wanted a car with duals also and can't see them. I just didn't like the pipes being so close together on the 1st gen. Not saying everyone else doesn't have a right to like them because the vehicle is still nice, just my own opinion.
  13. Man I don't know what to say. I need a new throttle body the dealer told me but I'm going to just get it cleaned next Friday and cut off the a/c to see if the problem is still there. I got 113000 miles on mine. It's at the shop now getting a starter put on for 600.00 @ One Stop Auto.
  14. Please make sure you check to see if you need a special kind of power steering fluid. My sister messed up her power steering in her Honda buy putting in the wrong kind. I know the coolant has to be a specific kind, I think Toyota red, although that probably has nothing to do with your wife's whining, uh, I'm mean your car.
  15. Anyone know where I can purchase a 98 LS throttle body besides the dealership? Also, can cleaning them solve the problem? My check engine light comes on again and puts the rpm's at 2000 automatically. So I have to cut off the car and restart it to get control of the acceleration again. I left my a/c running all the time so I wouldn't have this problem, if you notice the a/c changes the tension in the throttle, but now that the temperature is freezing, the LS automatically shuts off the a/c because it is freezing outside. It will stay on if it's at least 40 degrees. I don't know anything about the throttle body or it's function so I don't know if cleaning it will solve this problem. Thanks everyone.
  16. NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED!!Why do american automobile manufacturers keep doing the same thing? Buy american ,buy american, Well I wish I could but I work hard for my money so why through it away? ← You said a mouth full. I paid for my Ford Probe twice if you include repairs. And I purchased it brand new. Turned me completely away from Ford anything. I do like the Chevy Trailblazer. Probably the only American car I would purchase. Don't get me wrong, I want to purchase from my country, but hell man, why don't they concentrate on quality and dependability more. Every time my Probe broke down, it broke down. By that I mean, I couldn't drive it at all. My other vehicles had problems rarely, but I could drive them while I save up the money for the repairs.
  17. Man nc, you said it. I let a couple of people drive my car for a test and they are ready to trade their cars already. They were like, this is a 98. Are you sure. I'm like yeah, I purchased it didn't I. The other guy was like, it rides like it's brand new doesn't it, he was like yes. He's ready to trade in his Solara, the other guy wants to keep his Acura TL but get an LS. I don't blame him. His TL is a very nice vehicle that I like also. The cabin just isn't as quiet, but I still like it. I'm with you nc211. I want to pay mine off and add a 2001 LS430 beside the 400. Financing charges are the only thing that keep me from getting it sooner. If I could get a 6 or 7 percent rate, I'd be in business. Payment is now 490.00, I pay 600. So should be finished in the next 2 years. Price shouldn't be too high by then.
  18. Outside of an existing problem. I had a Lexus salesman tell me that the seats don't come on if the outside temp. is above 45-50. Don't really know if this is the case. Seems like it. ← I know you didn't believe that crap. It's almost freezing cold at 45 degrees. And remember, this was a salesman. I've heard everything from their child is dying and needs an operation, so they need to sell a certain amount of vehicles this month to pay for the hospital bill. They make it bad for the few honest salesmen.
  19. My corner light on the drivers side was rotted pretty bad, but that's because it was wet with water. My vehicle had been in an accident before I purchased it last year, probably why I got it for 16000. But sometimes we may not know whether our vehicles have been in minor collisions before we purchase them because it's not always listed in the carfax reports. A simple collision can cause air pockets anywhere along the car and let in moisture and rain. That can cause deterioration at an elevated time. I'm waiting for my crystal corners I ordered three weeks ago at luxurymods.com, they were on back order. I hope they hurry up and get here.
  20. Glad to hear she is ok. Two kids got killed around my way in an Acura Integra. It slammed into a pole sideways. Side impacts I see are really dangerous. I'm sure it hurts us to even look at the pic, but I'm almost positive you want another one.
  21. Thanks everyone. I found a place that said they would do it for 400.00 starter and labor. One Stop Auto. I know that's half of the price of everyone else but I'm going to take my chances. I had them put a radiator on my Camry years ago and it worked fine. I know this isn't a Camry, but for this price I'll take the chance. I'm going to drop it off at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning because they don't take appointments, first come first served and they are always busy. Oh well, on to my next question in a few.
  22. Ok, no responses. How bout' has anyone ever had to change their starter? I heard it was a serious task considering the position it's located in.
  23. My 98 has a wood/leather steering wheel and shift knob. They want how much for those knobs. No wonder when I go to auto dealers they keep their Lexus shift knobs inside the building. They must be hot on the street.
  24. I have know idea what that means. But I would like to, and how do you fix it?

    New Car

The picture with your dash in the dark is hot. Looks like even the heat/vent openers are illuminated. That's hot.
