Hi all, another newbie here. I feel assaulted by the electronics every time I drive this 5 month old new car. The most glaring incident is the following:

When I purchased the car, the salesperson set up my iphone 4 including my contacts. I found it avery useful feature on the two hour drive home in that I could look up someone by last name on the navigation screen and use the steering wheel controls to place and end a call while driving without fumbling with my phone...outstanding!

A few weeks later I bought an iphone 5 and deleated the old phone and contacts and installed the new iphone 5 and contacts. The sort order for my contacts is now by first name rather than last. I am unable to make a call by entering a number as the keypad and contact list is somehow locked out unless I stop the car.

The salesperson is now unable to install the contacts so they are sorted by last name and last name displayed first even though able to do so initially. This despite many attempts on his part to do so.

Trying to figure out why this no longer functions as it did initially has been very distracting if not downright dangerous; more so tha fumbling with the phone would have been.

I can look up and/or key in a number using my iphone, hit the call button on the iphone, cut the iphone off and use the pick up key on the steering wheel while moving and the system in the car will continue the call as it should. But when the phone button to end the call is used the contacts and numbers to enter a new number remain grayed out unless the car is stopped.

Now, if anyone would care to explain to me how to get my system back to the way it initially operated I would greatly appreciate it as the way things stand now, I'll be offloading this sucker due to the electronics great comfortable ride and reputation for limited mechanical problems notwithstanding.

Not used to using voice commands. That doesn't answer my original question, although I understand it may be a possible work around. Haven't tried verbalizing that it should reverse the sort order of my contacts...

Seems to me like this is an issue with how the contacts are displayed in the phone and not an issue with the car. I think the car just sorts alphabetically beginning with the first character in each line entry. So, try going to your "Contacts" application in your computer and under "contacts preferences" and set it to sort by last name and show first name following last name. Then re-sync your phone to your computer and then reload your contacts from your phone to your car. I don't have a 2012 LS460 or an Iphone5 to try this so if this doesn't help don't spend too much time with this as I am not sure. Most cars lock out the dialing while the car is in motion but do allow speed dial and that works nicely. Perhaps you were using speed-dial.

It is unlikely for a "computer" to be involved. It's contact list phone setting. But try dialing with voice commands - so easy.

I think you are probably correct. On the phone, try under "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" then under Contacts, select Sort Order = Last, First and Display Order = Last, First. I think the Display Order is the only one that is important. You would need to delete the contacts for this phone from your car and then reload them.

I did try reversing the sort order on the phone, deleted contacts and reinstalled them to no avail as they still list last name first in the car. Display order is set last name first on the phone. The process just bothers me as it was working in a perfectly helpful manner initially but now doesn't work at all in motion and won't sort contacts by last name. It is the "was and now won't" that I so far have been unable to understand. Wasn't using speed dial and I'm certain using verbal commands will be functional but I miss the way it functioned initially. The car suits me well but in my opinion the electronics are clunky at best (tire pressure sensor display for example) and to me, takes away from the whole experience of what driving should be. Maybe in the future they will offer an electronics upgrade that is more user friendly as it would be better than having to replace the entire car due to what I consider unnecessary aggravation. i do thank you all for your input.
