98 Ls400 "current Mpg" Computer Going Crazy

Hello everyone this is my first post and i wanted to see if anyone has any ideals.

This morning i was driving to work and noticed my current mpg was at 16 then it jumped up to 44 then down to 3 and all the way up to 99, it's just bouncing all over. All the other display options are working fine. I think the electrical connection might have come loose or the sensor went bad. My guess is there's a sensor on the intake manifold that sends the data to the computer. i haven't had a chance to look yet, it's been rainy. Does anyone have an ideal if there is such a sensor and where it is?

thanks

Dan

I've owned the car for 4 years now and it's never done this. At a constent speed on the freeway and at idle the display bounces around all over the place. It's not normal that's why i'm asking everyone on the forum. As far as the tank average being correct im not sure because the problem started this morning.

Blake918 is right--the current mpg function bounces all over the place because it is not any kind of average. It is the MPG at that second. It may seem pretty constant if you were driving on a really flat road with the cruise on but say you are traveling at highway speed down a hill--let completely off the gas and it will shoot up to 99.9. Accelerate up the next hill it may read 4.

It sounds like most of us misread your original post. Be patient, somebody should chime in soon.
