Stock Amplifier Question

Recommended Posts

i've been lurking here for a bit looking to see how this car is wired up without pulling the entire system out. I haven't found the answer to one question... How is the stock sub amp wired up for power? I would ideally like to tap off that power source but that's probably not going to happped. I want to install an aftermarket amp and will want probably want a 2-4 gauge run from the batery with a 1 farad capacitor.

Since wifey doesn't want me going crazy on the 98 GS400, i'm going to rip out the stock 10'' freeair, tap a converter off the sub speaker wires for an aftermarket amp and probably go with a JL W7 (10'') ported box right from Jl Audio. The amp will probably be a Fosgate Power 1000 bridged mono.

Anybody else have a similar setup?

do you mean you are going to tap a high/low converter from your stock sub wires? if this is the case, i don't think it will work due to the fact that the coverter picks up its signals from current flowing to speakers producing sound. but i guess it doesn't hurt to try. also be sure you find one of the previous posts that go into detail about taking out the stock sub. it is not as easy as it sounds.

I am not sure what 1skgs is talking about as it dose not make a lot of sense to me.

Simplest way is to get a JL 500/1 it will turn on with the stock sub wires being fed into it in an RCA.

I have a W7 in a H.O. box which runs great in my LS with a cap for a 500/1. W7 is a really big box

Thanks for the replies guys.

See my problem is that I never messed with any lexus systems. This GS is my first car I've owned in 6 years because I haven't needed one living in Midtown Manhattan.

I used to install and compete for a place called Custom Auto Radio years ago but we mostly had hondas, nissans, toyota, etc. Stock systems were (well still are) a joke and were ripped out and replaced with quality components. This is the first stock system I've heard that was half decent. I'm going to keep it and only replace the low end.

Ideally, I would run a fused 4 gauge power wire on the battery side to the trunk for the amps power and the RCA's on the other.

SKP, are you saying that I don't need to run a power wire for an aftermarket amp? I am assuming the stock amp has it's own power source which will power a 500 watt amp? Are there Preamp (RCA's) there also?

Also, I think the W7 box should fit under the rear deck, no?

I too think the stock system is pretty good - but I would like to get just a bit more bass out of the sub - what is the easiest way to do this? I was thinking I could just hook up an aftermarket amp to the existing sub to get it hitting a little harder - thoughts?
