I have a great ES300 48K miles, runs great. I took it in recently to my mechanic to get the rear valve cover gasket replaced and now the 'check engine' light comes on while driving on the freeway. The code says there is a problem with the EGR valve but he cannot find anything wrong with the EGR valve. He has reset the light four times, checked everything he can think of and it still comes on!

He is not a Lexus specific mechanic, but is very meticulous and has done everything he can think of. Has anyone else ever run into this? I am about to take it to the dealer but thought I would give this a shot before I lay down more money for something that was working fine before the valve cover gasket was changed.

Any help and advice would be appreciated...

Thank you.

Thanks for the reply. Took it to another mechanic who cleaned the egr valve and ports. No luck, light back on today. They think the temperature sensor is bad but they don't guarantee that is the problem. I'm not sure whether to continue down this course or not. Any advice?

So this is still happening. I bought an OBD scanner, reset the light. In the morning, when it is cold the light never comes on. In the afternoon it comes on after driving on the freeway for about 5 minutes. I have repeated this test multiple times with the same result. Does this seem like the temperature sensor or the modulator? I'd just rather not replace everything if I can avoid it.

Thanks...

I'd replace the modulator and see if that takes care of it since you've already cleaned out the egr.

I don't know if this will help you or not. I have a '97 ES300 and was having the same problem with the EGR light. I finally found a mechanic who must have know what he was doing. He said the EGR sensor needed replacing. $215.00 later and I haven't had a problem with the light coming back on since. Car seems to drive better also. Hope this helps. :)

I think there is a buildup of carbon in the egr valve try to clean it repeatedly for a couple of months and it should stop the obd scanner should also tell you where the problem might be like the oxygen sensors or the egr valves but its hard to get rid of it as the problem code might point in one direction and the problem might be something else as they are all related
