Ac Evaporator & Expansion Valve

Recommended Posts

I have been told by a mechanic that I need to replace the ac evaparator and expansion valve. The ac system is leaking freon but it is not in the engine area. He said these items were the only other cause of the leak. He said the whole dash has to be pulled. Is this true? Can anyone give me some insight or direction for this problem? Thanks.

Who is your mechanic? You don't need to pull the dash out to replace the evap and expension valve. You will have to remove the glove box compartment but it's not an easy job. Good luck.

I just replaced the expansion valve in my 93 Ls400 and it took me about 1 1/2 hours of work to have the entire behind dash unit containing the evaporator/expansion valve out. I definitely would not think about tackling this job unless you have the Lexus service manuals available, they show you all the fasteners, etc that you have to remove. It is definitely within the capabilities of a DIY'er but how to get it out is all that intuitive. Getting the glove box out is the easy part and just the beginning of the job.
