  3. How did you get it back into your garage......did you have it towed back to your garage.......if the timing belt broke; you would not have been able to start it to get it back to the garage...... More specifics please ????? Wont start.....does it still crank over.....be specific when describing problem......
  4. I agree...clean your terminals.....& secure tight
  5. The procedure from the Factory Service Manual..... Hope this helps.... trac.pdf
  6. Yes, the 24"crescent chain wrench with piece of old belt seems to work best....
  7. I stopped by the Lexus dealer here in San Diego & had a chat with a Lexus mechanic..... Yes, they do use a special tool which they will not lend out nor sell ( I don't understand why they would not sell them --- it would be a cash cow for them ) The DIY way described by the mechanic that he sometimes uses is: 1. take an old drive belt, cut it short ( but to an appropriate length ), loop it around the crankshaft pulley & A/C Compressor pulley only with the two cut ends of the belt ending on the top side of the crankshaft pulley but under the belt. When you start to bust loose the bolt, the belt will tighten up & lock the cranksahft pulley & A/C pulley tight & not move.... Think about it...it makes sense..... I have not tried this method but would like to here the results if anyone has tried it..... OR 2. A 24" crescent chain wrench & an old piece of drive belt cut to length to wrap the crankshaft pulley... One of these two methods has to be the best method in lieu of having the SST tool that the dealer uses or the bump starter method.... What is everyones opinion ?????
  8. Can everyone just focus on the removal of bolt & not the pulley......somehow everyone gets offtrack & starts talking about the harmonic balancer tool to remove the pulley.....lets focus on the BOLT removal only
  9. wwwest is way off base here....dont attempt his method.....
  10. IS400.......you have a great sense of humor.. "A hammer removes the bezel from a watch pretty good, but that is not what the rolex designer had in mind." If I told the toyota engineers that I cranked the engine to remove the bolt they would probably whisper to themselves in japanese, "twripical amrrriiikin fool." That was a good one....Laughed my !Removed! off.. They were doing everything but answering your simple question.... Guys, dont take offense.....it was just miscommunication here throughout this thread....
  11. ko90ls, What is the name of tool on e-bay......Can you post the link???? Thanks....
  12. Yes, what do the experts have to say here....is bolt is on with a torque of 181 ft-lbs.... How does the dealer do it ?????
  13. There are disadvantages to Southern Cal......my bumpers needed repainted due to cracking......& leather seats dry out quickly in hot sun.....not as bad as the Phoenix area thou.... Good luck with your repair job.....& congrats on the purchase.....you wont regret it......these cars are bulletproof......242k miles on my 1992.....& when she is done....I will buy another...... Hopefully yours will last a long time...... This forum has excellent help on it.....& just weed out the bull*BLEEP*.... Jeff
  14. Well being that you are in Minnesota & can understand rust issues......take care of the rust now....it will last as long as you own the car..... No rust here in Southern Cal...... :D
  15. Search mileage threads here in the forum & you will find alot of info on everyone's mileage.... 242k on my '92 LS400.....runs great
  16. If you are mechanically inclined....the best purchase you ever make will be a set of Factory Service Manuals for your year...they will pay for themselves the first you use them..... Worth their weight in gold.....check ebay for a set of manuals.....buy only factory manuals....
  17. Yes.....please explain....."worked fine until now"
  18. The dealer probably sells the whole tensioner only.....by that I mean the whole tensioner with the pulley attached to it.....you replace the entire assembly....thats where they get you..... If the pulley is just bad...you can have the bearing pressed out at a auto machine shop.....look at the bearing number on the backside of pulley & purchase a new bearing from a bearing store in your area.... & have it pressed back in.....then the pulley is as good as new..... Hopefully you can take back the replacement pulley you already purchased...... Good Luck.....
  19. Is it the bearing that is bad on the pulley ? If so, flip the pulley over & look at the bearing number....you can have it press out at a machine shop.....go to a bearing shop...purchase the bearing...& have it pressed back in....bearing cant be more $5 to $ 7 for a bearing..... Or if you dont want to replace the bearing, than buy the pulley from the dealer or off the internet if you can find it.... If the tensioner is bad...that is another issue......I believe these have a spring in them that causes the tension on the drive belt...if that is bad then I suggest buying the replacement tensioner...which seems by your picture that it is the entire assembly.... Hope this helps...... My suggestion is just to buy the bearing & have the old one pressed off & the new one pressed in.... Jeff
  20. Tensioner bolt is left handed threads - clockwise to loosen - that easy - on replacement counter clockwise to tighten - torque to 27 ft-lbs....that simple.....
  21. $400 to have bumpers repainted - both white & silver portions - here in San Diego...
  22. Bite the bullet & buy the tensioner pulley from Lexus, then you can use your old cover plate & bolt........the bolt is left handed thread....in other words counter clockwise to tighten.... Torque bolt to 27 ft-lbf per service manual...... You will be happier with OEM part here.... You are saving on labor by Doing It Yourself....
  23. You cant go wrong owning a Lexus......i have a '92 LS400 with 245K on it.....runs great......hoping for 300k mark.... Congrats on your purchase....... Keep reading this forum.......alot of useful information that will save you $$$$$'s dollars in the future if you are a DIY'er.... We love to keep the $$$$'s out of the dealer's pockets....
