Thanks, guys. I suppose I can afford one jug of overpriced coolant. But it sure makes you wonder how many of our vehicles are getting a different coolant added at aftermarket oil change places. If I had to guess, I suspect that topping off with DexCool will probably have no long-term effect on a vehicle that is otherwise well maintained. But for $20 I won't be the guinea pig. Tom

Well my two year old 400h is finally a bit low on coolant. I have a partial jug of Prestone Extended Life on hand (AKA Dex-Cool for GM vehicles). It is silicate free and phosphate free. But the manual recommends (after the obvious Toyota brand), in addition the the above, "non-amine, non-nitrate, and non-borate, and with long-life organic acid technology." What is this crap? A means to sell OEM coolant, or is there something better than Prestone Extended Life? Tom

I did a 20,000 oil change last week and also began an experiment for 5000 miles using regular fuel instead of premium. Still Costco fuel FYI. It is also summer in Arizona, meaning quite hot in the desert. I will report later on my findings and changes if any in fuel economy, performance, etc. Tom

No, it's not just you. I think it looks absolutely hideous, and useless and even dangerous for anybody who comes in contact with it, instead of the front part of the car that is designed to minimise impact with pedestrians and such.. but hey.. if you really like it.. why not. I wonder how long it will take for a hungry ambulence chaser to bring a suit against a vehicle owner for causing "additional" injury to a pedestrian due to modifications such as these? Tom

Costco just had a $10 coupon that brought it down to about the same price as Walmart. I'm thinking with the longer changeout, the price is a bit less than using regular oil. Just started using Mobile1 5w-30 about a year ago, 10,000 mile intervals. Next winter I think I'll go with 0w-30 to aid in the 1st 10 minute mpg warmup. Anyone have experience using this? I didn't see the Costco coupon, but was surprised that Costco was considerably higher than Walmart, although Costco does sell Mobil 1 in quarts vs Walmart's 5 quart container, which are a bit easier to handle. I know I could go longer than 5000 miles but the oil changes are so easy on our vehicles I just go ahead and do it. I know Porsche guys who are using 0w30 for that extra HP or two, but I just don't want to push it. Tom

I do my own oil changes on my 400h; lots of clearance and easy. I'm using Mobil 1, which is currently $22.00 at Walmart, and changing every 5000 miles. Tom

I made a strange discovery this week. I installed a version 7.1 map disk in place of my 6.1 disk and, or course, the "I Agree" thingy went away. Then I temporarily removed the 7.1 and reinstalled the 6.1 disk and the "I Agree" is still gone. Has my Lexus learned something from the 7.1 that it remembers? Tom

Thanks, I will await you response. I do think your friend may be correct after thinking a bit. My large air compressor has filters to catch moisture and impurities whereas the little battery powered thingy does not. So I suppose that the small one could introduce more moisture into a tire although the amount may or may not be significant. Tom

My apology, I misread your post Steve. I don't think that there is a setting to change that behavior. My rear hatch is unlocked after opening/closing too, which I find a bit ridiculous on a $50K vehicle. Tom

Your comment about 12v air pumps adding additional moisture is interesting. I have both a 12v rechargeable Craftsman inflator pump and an air hose reel on my garage ceiling that is constantly pressurized. Generally I find that the small pump is less trouble to use than dragging around an air hose making sure not to scuff the paint. Do you have any references to support your statement about the moisture difference? I would like to read more. Tom

I have used fuel injection cleaner off and on for many years, but always wondered if it does absolutely anything for an engine that runs well beforehand. I have never noticed any difference. Tom

My dealer does not (as yet) charge anything for a loaner car. Tom

Fuel injection flushes are a common way for dealers to increase their income, but A/C flushes are simply laughable. Tom
