  1. Unfortunately too access either knock sensor yu have to remove intake manifold....They are located in the same valley of the engine....
  2. You know if all I had was a commuter car, the electric would kind of make sense, but if you only have one vehicle and is used for everything, than the hybrid fits the bill. That said their are lots of vehicles that get great mileage that are neither....
  3. Here is a little info on starter contacts: http://www.nationsautoelectric.com/instructions.html
  4. Yea Paul, bought that thing for $3000 and then restored it...What a beautiful handling car...and quite fast for a twin cam, 6cylinder....The frame was very interesting, mono body and steel frame bolted to it for supporting the front end and engine...The worst thing was the brake system, had two masters cylinders and was a bear to bleed it. The Upper cam chain had to be adjusted every 5k miles....And in 1968 the SU carbs were replaced with Stromberg (really crappy carb) But boy, on a curve or straightaway that car could cruise...The unique thing about the jag was the inboard mounted disk brakes on the rear...They were mounted next to the differential...Loved that car, but was like putting your money on the edge of the Grand canyon and kicking it in....
  5. From what I have read on these forums and Toyota Highlander forums this does happen...I kind of feel it must be poor seals on the bearing causeing the failure or poor lubrication grease in the bearing...the part is about $57 but the labor is the killer...Also that is just for the bearing, some may replace the whole hub/bearing assembly which is probably the way to go...I have replaced the bearing on my old RX300 and it was not as easy as I thought...
  6. I believe there is a way to figure out the limited slip by jacking the rear up and turning the wheels, but I cant remember the procedure...As long as the fluid says it is good for limited slip you are good to go....As for the seal, sorry cant say I have...Google it, maybe there is some info on the seal...it would envolve removing the drive axle from the differential to replace that seal...
  7. One other note: some RX300 had limited slip differential....mine did, so I made sure that the gear lube that I used stated it was good for limited slip axle....
  8. Excellent overview....thought provoking. Thanks for posting. Question: I have been in the affirmative on the need to raise some taxes in order to clean up our debt load. Am I correct when I say that our current tax rates are the lowest they have been since the early 1950's? The need to raise taxes would have to be tied to a freeze in the current budget...otherwise they will continue to spend as always....shuffle the money, and the money would never go to its intended distination...
  9. Being compassionate,is one thing, but really providing what people need ie a job, a skill, and having a system that monitors abuse is lacking...Drug testing, and monitoring progress is what is needed, and there should be a limit on time to meet this goal (not 25years or more)....Charity groups do a better job than the government when trying to achieve the help necessary...You can continue to give freebees but there should be a goal, light at the end to self sufficiency....Only the severly disabled should be on the dole, not folks that are in better physical condition than the aches and pains that most working folks live with day in and day out. And yes you are right, at least Clinton knew how to run things, Obama is all about looking presidential.... Yes the blaming of the tea Party is really getting old, but like simple minds in the right, the simple minds in the left join in on that Mantra. Heck if anything the Tea Party which is a cross section of all americans fed up with the over reaching government has at least caused both parties to react to their rediculous spending spree.... They are a catalyst in the locked division to the two parties, Neither of the old guard party members like what they propose...(real change)
  10. Look closely on frame 2 of the write up...the plug is next to the exhaust pipe and the plug looks like the drain plug....
  11. Thanks Paul, I really dont jump to conclusions, I just see all of the dead weight in my own sphere of family and it really bothers me that they have done nothing for over 25 years and continue to live on the government handout....There is a system that they defeat quite easily, and you and I pay for it. So when the government gives to so many like this when you, your family, and I work, what is fair about that. That unfortunately is what the Dems are all about, buying votes and providing generations of folks that dont want to work anymore. It is rampart around every major city in the US....That is why when government wants more, I say no....stop....Hope your family finds work soon...
  12. You need to read the whole thing. In several places within the document S&P discusses the need to increase revenues (raise taxes). Had the senate passed and the President signed the House bill we may have avoided a Downgrade, but there would have been huge cuts to Medicare and Social Security, huge cuts in Government programs that put lower and middle income Americans to work and are propping up the economy. So...we might have been AAA rated...but back in a recession. Had the House agreed to proposals from the Dems and Obama...we would have avoided a downgrade, but their Millionaire buddies would have had to pay more taxes. See...it goes both ways. Its the inability of BOTH sides to COMPROMISE that is at issue here. I don't know what Media you were watching, but the Democrats certainly had solutions that included $4T in deficit reduction, they just included rolling back tax cuts for the rich and closing loopholes for corporations. The Republican bill was JUST cuts, no revenue increases and the Dem proposal was a mixture of both. Of course there was no Dem bill, bills originate in the house...and the GOP controls the house. To say that you never saw any solutions from the Democrats proves you are just working off what you're fed from the Right. I also assume that you do in fact accept your Social Security entitlement payments. Talk the talk...but won't walk the walk. Really this isn't true. Yes the benefit is calculated on the $120k, but there is a cap. For instance when my wife was laid off in 2008, she was making about $60k and qualified for the maximum unemployment in MD. So...she got the same check as someone who made $120k....$250k....$500k. That check was $350 a week. So the argument that $350 a week is "so much money" that she wouldn't have taken a $50k job doesn't really hold water. She's applied for well over 1,000 jobs since then, including jobs well below her qualifications and pay level, and has been on maybe 4 interviews...and has no job. Luckily she doesn't have to work. Not everybody's so fortunate. No I do not receive social security, however I have paid into it for 45 years....And yes I understand the Dems want to raise tax, but their are a whole slew of economist that feel that is not the right thing to do...That is where both parties dont see eye to eye..I personally like Connie Macks proposal with the freeze the budget and reduce by 1% per year for the next 6 years....Bring all ideas to the table, and since the politicians live by polls, broadcast the ideas and see what America wants.
  13. 1962 Austin Healey Sprite 1968 Triumph TR 250 loved, beat me to death, but made me a great mechanic 1972 Opel Rallye Bought in Spain brought back to US... 1965 Volvo built like a tank, very slow 1978 VW Diesel yea, 48 mpg 1980 Honda Prelude absolutely loved, but should have bought dad's corvette 1983 Honda Civic too small 1984 Honda Accord bigger, 1968 Jaguar XKE wow, loved and hated, rebuilt engine completely by myself 1985 Mercedes 190E Best handling car I have ever driven.. 1990 Dodge Caravan great family vehicle 1986 Dodge Caravan Company car which I bought, great family vehicle... 1986 Chevrolet S10 peice of junk 1998 Honda Accord All around good, but seats very uncomfortable 1998 Ford Windstar again a great family vehicle 1980 Ford Coachman motorhome fix and repair constantly 1998 Lexus RX300 /Super vehicle, but transmission failure a bummer, rest of car fantastic. 2005 Ford F150 crewcab my first big pickup, Like it now, 2008 Lexus RX400h Love this car so far... 14. The front differential shares the tranny fluid...The front transfer case uses gear oil as well as the rear differential...I put in full synthetic on mine. The front and rear each take a full quart...So 2 quarts should do you. remember remove the fill plug first, then the drain plug in case you cant get them undone. You will need a pump to put the fluid in. they sell them at any parts store...
  15. Here is a great one from Club Lexus: http://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-first-generation/384943-does-the-awd-rx300-have-front-and-rear-differential-and-transfer-case.html
  16. Thank you for this info: http://www.standarda...dervalue3=UTF-8 I read it and it states over and over, that basically our debt is our problem..I agree...And that our wonderful politicians are not capable of implementing the cuts necessary to stop the projected growth that in ten years will bring us to a 100% ratio of debt to income. If Obama and Harry Reid had considered the first bill passed by the house, this would have been very close to meeting the needs to stop our debt. But because the Democrats, and many Republicans fail to change their ways we are doomed. Americans are going to have to realize that we are in a financial crisis that could bring not only the US but a domino effect to the rest of the world. Connie Mack from Florida has a 1%plan that could also curtail this debt. To bad we have a lack of problem solvers in our Congress. They are still motivated by their pet programs, and are so near sighted that the future is beyond their capability to solve problems.
  17. I put the foam pipe wrap on my garage door just in case, Glued and cable tied it. That way door can open and hit foam....
  18. thankyou Paul, yes problem solving, that is what is needed....All solutions should be thrown on the board, and then selectively the good and bad picked out of them. The Senate not even looking at the first Bill presented by the Representatives was tragic...All because of the party hard lines. These folks (both parties) are not problem solving or even making an attempt...NO Media showed me solutions from the Democratic Party....I wanted to see their solutions versus the Republicans solutions (which were presented) and see what strengths there were in the two solutions...But no....it aint happening.
  19. "We also believe that the fiscal consolidation plan that Congress and the Administration agreed to this week falls short of the amount that we believe is necessary to stabilize the general government debt burden by the middle of the decade." That is the final line, meaning debt, which is not reduced, is a major issue, Ialong with the inablility of Congress to reduce this debt....If the original plan passed by the house had been passed in the Senate and approved by OBAMA he would have saved us...It had over 4trillion in reductions...and cap and trade....It also would have been difficult for him to have been defeated in the next election...because than the country would have come first, not his party.
  20. And rediculous is what we have received from our government...Good financial habits are a must...If government were a business they would be more concerned about what they spend, but since they have to show no profit, than spend is what they do. There are no incentives for departments, employees, etc to save anything...They know that next year they will get more, and more, and more....That is why we are in the mess that is going to be over 20trillion debt in 10 years... Government was originally meant to protect our country, and provide safety to our citizens...Safety doesnt mean entitlement programs that create generations of welfare...LBJ was the evil that started this and we have never stopped. What is needed now is a leader with advisors that take reins and stop this madness. You are not correct that their is a correlation between home economics and the US economics...The similiarity is that when we run out of money we cut spending....Government has to do the same. That is what the S&P is telling us. NOT one program has ever ran efficiently when government has stepped in....The Bailouts should not have happened, but the doomsayers from Congress said it would have been a disaster, but what do we have now. Banks and Financials that have done nothing to help AMERICANS...And still sit on our tax money and gather bonuses. I know it is a complicated problem, but spending is one part of it, and regulations killing our industry is another. It would have been far better if GM, Chrysler, Bank of America, etc had failed...The strongest would have filled the vacuum...Then the players that made the right decisions could have taken over and grown...
  21. Timothy has not a clue. He feels the Congressional budget ceiling vote was a good down payment, When actually the Cap, TAX, and trade amendment would have cut 4.3 trillion and possibly given the S&P a reason not to downgrade. He still believes spending our way out of crisis is the only solution...We need to freeze our budget, and pay our debt. It is so simple, that is what we do at our households...
  22. I hope Obama finally realizes that Timothy Geitner is a complete flop...He needs to resign and get someone with real common sense...
  23. You know your right, but why was he elected if he had no expertise....Yes we need a moderate to be elected that sees the good of American people to make his/her decisions...As for the deficit, I still feel that is a major issue, and will continue to kill this country...4trillion is nothing, but even they (both parties) would not see eye to eye. How many times do politicians need to get hit in the head before they realize we cant support 40% of the public because they dont want to participate in earning a living...We need direction, our ship is about to wreck on the rocks, and there is no lighthouse guiding us...Start by making our fiscal house fixed, giving business a clear reason why they are important and bring our jobs back to the US...Heck give a real tax break to business that brings back our jobs permanantly...Look at incentives to creat a healthy climate for bussiness and jobs will happen... Green jobs are a small portion of what needs to be done...Unfortunately the Democrats dont support any jobs that dont meet their agenda in crippling our industry..
  24. The 1mze engine was the designation for the V-6 used in Toyota Camry's, Lexus ES300, RX300, etc...until 2003 914 surely was the baby that made the office change throughout the world...Dad worked on them, I saw them in some old accounts and Leesburg....Those were the days...
  25. Increase taxes? So they can keep spending? Oh my God....That is the problem...The markets wanted to see a decrease in spending....That was what the economist said over two years ago...Problem with government is that they get idiots like timothy that havent a clue...Tax and Spend the matra of our government...Solution, decrease spending, re address the absolutely barage of regulations that are killing business, and this will show the business community a positive sign....I swear if you raise taxes, you will put us in a spiral that we will never recover from. And quit sending bad money for the bailouts....Europe tried that and look what is happening, entire countries are defaulting...Funny all of us little people tighten our purses to make it, but government thinks they can buy prosperity...And maybe lead by example instead of Obama and the politician living like kings and queens. How many pleasure trips do you need. I hope all of the folks that voted for Obama are enjoying the trips to Spain, New York, etc...Kind of like a reality show on steroids....Take some notes from the few states that have controlled their spending, and are recovering..slowly, but yes recovering...
