rps2000 Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 I just bought a very clean 96 ES300. One owner car w/ 115,000 miles. Before I bought it I had a competant mechanic check it out - his verdict - "a strong car." The day after I bought it the check engine light came on . Took it back to the dealer (very large Toyota dealership) and the sales manager said "Forget about it, these things happen all the time. Just keep driving the car. It could be a loose gas cap." I told him I wasn't comfortable w/ his advise since the owner manual says when the CEL comes on take it to the dealer immediately. I am not mechanically sophisticated. What should I do?
steviej Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 take it back to the dealer and ask for a printout of what the actual code is. Some codes are probably nothing to worry about, some mean big problems. You won't know until you have the actual trouble code stored in memory. Either way, a code is being triggered, which means something is not functioning right. Have them fix it!!! and don't take no for an answer. Speak with the service manager and the general manager if possible. Something tells me they knew the code was there and erased it from memory to sell the car. Most likely it may be a faulty O2 sensor. Whatever it may be, you should have at least gotten a 30 day warranty on the purchase from the dealership. steviej
