Error P0161 02 Sensor

Recommended Posts

I have a Black 2000 GS300. My check engine light just came on while driving home. I took it to Autozone where they read the code. Turned out to be an 02 sensor. The error read p0161 - 02 sensor, bank 2 - sensor 2. Does anyone know where this sensor is located? Have any pics or manuals? I'm going to change this myself to save $$$$. Thanks for any help! :)

I think i had the same code... o2 sensors in general are very easy to change but not always easy to reach. I know the sensor I have to replace has to be accessed by removing the front passenger seat... it sounds like fun but I haven't gotten to it yet. I ordered my new sensor from rockauto.com they always have like a 5% coupon code going on and their prices and shipping are pretty good.

Thanks for your reply! Any Idea where I can find a picture for the location of my sensor?

i dunno, you can try other forums, i haven't really looked yet but if you're very patient i'm going to do a write up when i do mine.

That code is Bank 2 Sensor 2 alright - it's the o2 sensor which is on the exhaust right under the right hand (Your passenger) door. Tricky thing with changing this o2 sensor is that the wires from it go up through the floor of the car and, while you don't have to remove the seat, you do need to get under the footwell carpet so lot of ripping of dash & trim to allow this. Other option is to cut the wires under the car going to the existing sensor and splice on the wires from the new sensor which means you have no messing inside the car but being honest, if you've the time, always better to do it right and just plug in the proper connector inside the car!

There is an excellent tutorial on the web (I'm sure it was on LOC) for replacing this sensor - I can't find it right now but I know I found it previously using google and it was step by step with photos and really helpful when I was doing mine.

Also, rockauto.com is the way to go for the sensor - Cheapest I could find at the time, Original Denso with correct wire length and plug, and delivered to the far side of the Atlantic in about 2 days B)

  • 2 weeks later...

Still WAY easier than Bank 2 Sensor 1 ....On the top of the rear manifold, 3/4ths the way down the engine compartment AGAINST the freakin firewall. Which by the way, Autozone's computers will tell you the wrong sensor fits. They're computer catalog isn't correct. Just a side note to save someone my hassel.
