I have a 2004 RX330 and to no surprise, the transmission is having issues. It currently has ~80k miles and the transmission is slipping. It's been regularly serviced and I just had another complete flush done by the dealer. The question I have is the following: Has anyone taken their RX into a transmission specialty shop (AAMCO, Tanner, Etc.) and had them take care of the slipping problem? Dealer wants ~$5k for a new one and I'd rather not spend the money if a transmission specialist could fix it for less. BTW, I have no faith in our local Lexus dealer. Horrible service.

Thoughts or experiences?

Someone told me this transmission is sealed ie can't take it apart to service the defect. It it's broke, the whole transmission gets replaced. At least that's what happened to my 05 rx330 tranny (AWD). My transfer case was OK if I remember correctly. Whether an independent shop can get one for cheaper, don't know.

Hello,

My 99 went out at about 70k. I had a transmission shop around the corner do it for $1700. (85k now, no probs.)I would not go to a dealer ($$) nor would I go to an Amco (duh). Rather, find a trusted indi (Angies list?) shop.

Assuming it the same or very similar box, I'd think anyone could do it.

Hi,

I have my 99 FWD 161K, done by an independent shop for $1500.

It's been 2 months and no problem.

Independent, not the big chain shop like AAMCO

I don't know if your tranny is different than a 99's.

Find a shop in your local that you know or recommended to you!

In my case, he was recommended to me by my a mechanic at my office.

Not to be a wise-guy but that IS a surprise. If you'd said it was you're 99 I'd have not been surprised but an 04 330 is quite a surprise as we've not seen many of those fail.

My 2004 has 145,000 miles on it and it is fine...(knocking on wood sound) and shifts like new. It gets a T-IV drain fill every 15,000 miles.

I have a RX330 2004 and is doing thesame as you mentioned - slipping in the gears. It still has about 10k km of power train warranty. I went to a dealer and they are asking for a fee to find out if this transmission problem would be covered under power train warranty. DOES TRTRANSMISSION PROBLEM NOT COME UNDER POWER TRAIN ??????????

What kind of crooks do you have in Canada? If the transmission is slipping it should be covered under power train warrantee unless you have abused it or failed to maintain it according to man. guide lines. Part of the warrantee should be to diagnose it.

My guess would be that person was not very knowledgeable, maybe not at all.
