shawndh
I'm also thinking about switching to full synthetic. Will I benefit from switching to synthetic at this mileage? I basically want to extend the recommended oil change intervals to something like 8k to 10k miles. I'm going 10k intervals in my A4 and it's as clean as new under the valve covers, so I'm comfortable with doing those kinds of intervals. I just don't know much about Lexus' and my A4 has always had full synthetic since it was new, it's now got 142k miles. I don't want to turn this into a debate about oils (I've read some threads in the archives), I'm just trying to find out what weight oil is recommended and what you all are using. SW03ES
I use Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W30 (this is the weight Lexus reccomends) on 5k drains.
Lexusfreak
Another vote for 5W 30 here. ;)
lenore
5-30 is what I have used, but at 140k miles I switched to 0-30 Castrol oil (German). The engine is definetly smoother, and seems to be quieter. I now have 150k miles and it has worked well.

How in the world did you rack up all those miles? Either way, it's very encourageing. (edit) I see it's a 97. Didn't notice that B4
shawndh
Thanx for the replies guys. I'm going with 5W30 full synthetic and I think I'm going to keep the intervals short starting out. I know there's a sludge issue with these engines so I'll keep the first full synth change at about 5k or 6k. Also, how many quarts does this engine take? I don't have the manual with me. The 03 ES does not suffer from the oil sludge issue.....it was some 97-01 models. It will take 5 qt's with filter change.
SAFRO.COM
SAE 5W-30 Energy conserving II is what it should say on the filler cap

I use 0w-20 from Amsoil..There is no need for a 5w-30 anymore. In fact, Lexus posted a TSB on this and even new toyo's come with I think ow-30... I only do a min drain of 11,000 miles...No need to before. That is me based on UOA's, no guessing etc. I put about 1% faith in Lexus on oil duration, time etc.
