Trying to find out the type of coolant in my '93 ls400.

The coolant is orange which indicates Dexcool. But

I thought Dexcool came out in '96. As far as I know

the vehicle was serviced by Lexus. Thanks.

My understanding is that the orange Dex-cool is a Texaco and GM long life coolant. It is a far different colour from the Toyota red long-life coolant. Personally, I don't like Dex-cool, which is not to be used in any system that permits air to contact it while hot and under pressure. The Toyota coolant is superior in my mind.

Well, I have both in stock in my repair shop, and they don't look, smell, or feel the same to me. One is orange and one is red. And the Toyota coolant is cheaper.

When Dexcool is exposed to the atmosphere it turns a muddy brown colour. Even old Toyota coolant remains red.

:cheers:I use the Orange one in my 1990 LS 400. As long it is safe for aluminum it will be OK. Remember the block and heads are made of aluminum...

!!!WARNING !!! DO NOT MIX COLORS , ALWAYS FLUSH THE SYSTEM ENTIRELLY IF SWITCHING FROM RED TOYOTA TO ORANGE DEXCOOL !!!WARNING !!!

I would really recommend sticking to the Toyota coolant. I think GM may be involved in a lawsuit regarding the new longer life coolant. As someone said, if you have a coolant leak and the system is not kept completely full it can cause a lot of damage to your engine.

Steviej had posted a great thread about all the qualities of them both and the lawsuit pertained to them using the name long life which prestone or some one has already trademarked, not the product.
