Help I Cant Get The Axle Out

I can't answer your question directly but I have removed and replaced front axles on other front wheel drive cars. I can say that even though I have no issues with doing this type of work, I found it impossible to do without a manual telling me which parts to remove and what to do in a step-by-step procedure.

On my Acura, the old axle did not want to come out because there is a spring "keeper" that holds a grove on the axle. I had the car jacked up, supported on jack stands and I used a large headed screw driver as a little wedge. I lightly tapped the screw driver between the flange on the transmission and the head of the axle. The wedge shape of the screw driver slowly backed the half shaft out.

I am a neebie on the site, it doesn't seem many people on this site do any "real" fixes like you are asking for....

I supose you're including yourself in that group since I don't see a "real" answer from you. Nonethless you are correct to a certain extent.

I surmise there are several possible reasons for the lack of response tio this issue

1.) Nobody has found it necessary to do this kind of repair on their RX, the vehicle as a series isnt that old.

2.) People who own these types of cars arent inclined, don't have the time/equipment or simply can afford to not "do the dirtywork" themselves.

or

3.) Posts from Noob's don't get a lot of response just because thats the internet forum culture. I try to be as responsive as possible to anyone I can help.

But I know from being on a lot of forums that you have to "earn" your way up to serious querries. Not saying I like it mind you, its just been my

experience.

I cant get the front passenger side axle out from the half shaft any help would be great

From the manual:

1) Remove cotter pin, cap and axle shaft lock nut. Raise and

support vehicle. Remove front wheel(s). Remove fender apron flap.

Drain differential fluid. Remove bolt and ABS speed sensor.

2) Disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle. Disconnect

lower ball joint from lower control arm. Mark differential flange,

axle shaft and center shaft for reassembly reference. Remove

differential-to-axle shaft mounting bolts.

3) Using plastic hammer, disconnect axle shaft from axle hub.

Push front axle hub outward, away from axle shaft. Using pry bar,

remove left axle shaft. See Fig. 2. Remove right axle shaft bearing

lock bolt and snap ring. See Fig. 3. Remove right axle shaft.

axel=half shaft. use a crowbar and pry it out of the differntial. Either that or start pulling on it, but don't pull on the joints, you don't want to mess them up (unles the axel is toast already). But a crowbar always worked for me.

Mike00 has the correct instructions, And yes I have removed and replaced the left drive shaft on my RX300, so there are people here that do it... The use of a small crowbar my help a lot, the spring clip is what holds the shaft.. By the way I had a really hard time removing the axle from the hub, I suggest putting the axle nut back on and hitting it with a heavy hammer if it sticks, I tried wood between the shaft and hammer, but it cushioned the blows. The new axle shaft should come with a new nut. I replaced the seal on the tranny where the axle goes in, also another challenge when trying to insert the new seal straight. It can all be done, just takes patience.. by the way I removed the abs speed sensor before I banged the axle shaft out of the hub, I didnt want to risk any damage. It was dirty and had some debris on it. Toyota sells a Haynes repair manual for the Highlander/RX300 for around $15 which is really good for reference..Good luck

Thanks guy i figured i didn't have to unbolt the axle bolts cause they are "torque to yield" bolts which means they can only be used once. (trust me I have A 1991 mR2 which i removed the bolt and used then again and a day latter i was stuck on the side of the rode with my axle dragging the ground) I thought it would pop out at the retainer clip on the RX300 and remove the axle but nope you have to unbolt it. Just make sure u get 6 new bolts part number 90110-10015 from lexus and im sure toyota has the same ones. The whole job really wasnt that bad it was just getting all the part that was the worst.
