Catalytic Converter?

Recommended Posts

I have an IS250, with 18,000 miles on it. It has the smell of eggs coming from the car. I've taken it to the dealer, and I think even mentioned it in this Web site before, when the car was still new. I was told it should wear off, that it's just a new-car smell. Well, after 18,000 miles, shouldn't the smell be gone? Lexus can't diagnose it until they actually smell it, and it, of course, won't do it when I'm at the dealer......

This can also happen when the converter gets really hot.

If you are going up long hills where the car stays in a lower gear and giving it the gas, or just keeping the car in too low of a gear, the sulfur smell occurs.

Totally normal, and most likely caused by the driving conditions.

Thanks all. You gave me more info than the dealer did.....

It happens going up the hill to our home, when I put it into sequential third gear. But it also happens sometimes after a trip from Los Angeles back to our home in Claremont.
