How do you know the O2 sensor is bad? Now assuming it is bad there are two O2 Sensors on the RX 300. There is one on each side of exhaust behind each catalytic converter. The sensors above the Cats are Air/Fuel ratio sensors.

The mechanic told my aunt that it was the O2 Sensor. He wants to charge her about $280 total for parts and labor.

Go some where, (Autozone for example) and have them pull the code. Mu bet is you will find you have a lean bank. Normally this is caused by a vacuum leak and not the O2 sensor itself. The code will come back saying the O2 is out of range, and it is. It is out of range as there is too much air vs. fuel....
