I considered a VW & the TDI models......but in the long run after all warranties are done, they do not have a great reliability record & parts replacement are astronomical. Thanks for your suggestions. B)

I can't say ANYTHING bad about volvo. Except i don't care for the sound of their engines. And their looks need to be upgraded.

The car will be purchased used or 'pre-owned' as some call it. Once the 'right one' is found, chances are it will be kept somewhere between 5 - 7 years is my guess as the way things stand now.

The way I see it, with a 5 star safety rating across the board, excellent reliability rating and reasonable fuel economy with full time AWD & about 65 cu ft of cargo space, we can't loose with a 2003 or 2004 Subaru Forester XS. It's got decent power from a large 4 banger to boot & some unique features that is a definate benefit in the harsh winter months. B) ;)

It all depends on how well they're taken care of etc. Is it just that you only want it for 5-7 years, or are you "hoping" for at elast 5-7 years?

All service records will be accounted for before purchase & I have OCD if you will when it comes to maintaining (synthetic fluids, & the best replacement parts etc) & looking after my vehicles....which is meticulous. All my vehicles get fully rustproofed as well. B)

Agreed & I let someone else 'break in' the vehicle, maintain it for me & take a good chunk of the depreciation hit. ;) B)

True; cars do lose the most $$$ in the first year. And the break in period sucks because you have to drive it carefully LOL

They just did some light refreshing on the Highlander so I think its got another year or two on it.
